Red Sox, Francona To Part Ways

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [september 30, 2011 at 8:38am CST]

The Red Sox and manager Terry Francona will part ways, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (all Twitter links). Francona's three-year, $12MM deal included club options for 2012-13 worth $8.75MM in total ($750K buyout) and the Red Sox could announce their decision to decline the options today.

Francona, 52, has led the Red Sox to two World Series Championships this decade. The Red Sox won it all in 2004, their first season under Francona, and again in 2007. The Red Sox have a 744-552 record in eight seasons under Francona. They finished the 2011 season with a 90-72 record and missed the playoffs by one game after an extended late-season slump.

The White Sox are looking for a manager, but Heyman hears Francona isn't high on Chicago's list of candidates.

Very Surprising in my eyes and the eyes of my Boston fan coworker. from what i was reading sounded like Francona might have suggested he not come back, as in a mutual decision between himself and Epstein.

I could see Theo on the North side... but I still think Ryno ends up back there as manager. Could also see Francona on the south side.. though I still think it will depend on what happens with LaRussa. If TLR goes back to The Cell, then I think Francona goes to StL.

Francona will probably enjoy more being out of Boston. Watching their press conference, both Francona and Epstein seemed be saying (without actually saying) that the players this year were just lacking in heart and desire. As a manager, when you're in charge of what people believe is gonna be one of the greatest teams ever, all you can do is disappoint. You can't really exceed expectations.

Don't be drinking in the clubhouse, it's hard to pinch-hit or run in the 15th inning when you have a little buzz on.

:lol

Youkilis declined to confirm or deny reports that some starting pitchers were drinking beer in the clubhouse during games in which they weren't pitching, saying position players don't even know what's going on in the clubhouse and that he in particular is always the last to know what's going on. But he did not endorse the idea.

"I don't think it's the right thing to do," he said. "But I don't think that's how you win or lose games."

"He in particular?"

What's that about?

He's Sergeant Schultz?

I know nothing!

He as much as admits that he knows it happened. Looks like things got a little lax under Francona. They thought they had the WC locked-up as if it was an Eastern Division payroll birth-right.

Oh, well.
