December 26, 201113 yr Buster Posey was on my fantasy team. When it happened I was bummed about losing my fantasy catcher, but I was stoked for my real team. It was a standard, clean play at the plate, and I lost all respect for Brian Sabean when he made those comments about a young kid just trying to make an impression on his ballclub.
December 26, 201113 yr The reaction to the play will always piss me off. But guess what: -Collisions at the plate are legal. -I think it's crystal clear that Cousins wasn't head hunting or any of that stupid stuff. -Cousins was planning to hit him under the assumption that Posey HAD THE BALL!! But Posey is a golden boy and Cousins is an unknown. So there you go.

I think Cousins had decided to hit Posey to make a splash play assuming that he would be entirely blocking the plate with the ball. He in no way blocked the plate but Cousins bowled over him anyway. It wasn't as much a dirty play as much as it was somewhat stupid and unnecessary.

And as ILMSF said, Posey was a "golden boy." Had it happened to someone like Chris Iannetta, nobody would have cared except Rockies fans. Not too many people made a big fuss about the Morgan-Hayes incident, even saying we were wrong for throwing at Morgan the next day. But, who cares.
December 26, 201113 yr I had the pleasure of meeting two Giant fans, in from SF for the holidays at a party Sat night. It was a pleasure, talking baseball for about an hour at a party instead of meeting new people and discussing things neither side really cares about. Anyway, they were not even aware of Sabean's "apology", yet they still think it was not clean. Unfortunately, they base their POV on the freeze frame analysis that took about 5 minutes, as if life and the split section action can now actually be in slow motion. Too bad things do not happen in stop action, super slo-mo to a play that happens over and over again throughout the season and for as long as baseball has been played. If Posey had just rolled backwards like what happens most of the time, it would have been a hard collsion at the plate, end of story. So, was it really the play or just bad luck that his foot caught and snapped.
December 26, 201113 yr This is baseball, plays like this have been going on for more than 100 years. I have a very hard time seeing the Giants POV that it was his intention to hurt Buster Posey, nor do I see another way of him scoring without doing what he did. He said in the video that he didn't have enough room to slide or make it close so he did what any baseball player should do in that situation in order to score. It was an unfortunate incident but lets move on people, stuff happens and it was part of the game.
December 26, 201113 yr Really interesting video. Cousins is a well-spoken man. Posted it on my SFG-fan friend's wall; I'm curious to hear his take.
December 26, 201113 yr Personally, I thought it spoke volumes when the majority of the baseball world remained on Cousins' side despite the fact it was Posey that was injured. A no-name player taking out one of baseball's future stars on a "disputable" play usually tilts the landscape in favor of a guy like Posey but it had to be about 80% (and that may be a low estimate) approval rating for Scott's decision despite the outcome. That alone makes me feel comfortable and helps me sleep at night =)
