Posted January 16, 201213 yr I'm sure some of ya'll have heard about this by now, although I'm kinda shocked by the lack of coverage (at least on the internet). Apparently it was a really big mess and none of the evacuation schemes went to plan, causing the death of some 8+ passengers with 15+ MIA, and the arrests of the captain and the first officer. But my question is... what the hell do they do with a 110,000 tonne ship deemed a total loss at $500 million half submerged under water? Surely they don't just leave it as a shipwreck? I'd imagine in some situations a ship like this is salvageable. Would they just get a ton of high powered pumps and get the boat back afloat or what? What about in the situation where the ship is not salvageable? Do they strip it for parts? Do they sink it? I'm intrigued as to what becomes of such a mess, and how they would go about dealing with it.
January 16, 201213 yr Quite a lot of coverage over here. How on earth does a massive ship like that get so close to the coast? Must have been a shocking navigation error somewhere.
January 16, 201213 yr Author Well it sank because it ran aground. Word surrounding it is that the captain made some unauthorized changes to the ships originally programmed path as a 'touristic detour' and ran the boat aground doing so.

Word surrounding it is that the captain made some unauthorized changes to the ships originally programmed path as a 'touristic detour' and ran the boat aground doing so. I know that! Ridiculous how big ships like that can accommodate several thousand people.
January 20, 201213 yr I think this is a clear cut case of GROSS negligence on the captains part. If these ships stay on their meticulously plotted courses they have 0% chance of running aground, his actions before and during the accident are head scratchers to say the least, ordering dinner 45 minutes after the accident, abandoning ship and claiming he "fell" into the boat, being ordered back on to the ship and playing dumb... It goes on and on.
January 20, 201213 yr Author Regardless of him abandoning ship, regardless of him playing dumb, regardless of the ship even getting into the accident (because it wouldn't shock me if scenic routes are often taken at the risk of the captain).... Regardless... To run your ship aground and play it off as if everything is okay and asking everyone to return to their staterooms is just... speechless. These ships are moving cities. They know when they are taking on water. The matter of the fact is that every single life could've been saved had the ship been evacuated immediately following the incident. In fact, I doubt he'd even get in as much trouble had everyone made it off safely and in proper order. It's not as though they didn't have an ample amount of time to get off the ship. Not only were the passengers ordered to leave their muster stations and return to their staterooms well after the incident... but the ship did not start evacuating until after it had starting listing. That's ridiculous. It's just sad. No doubt the captain was probably in denial of the fact that he f***ed up royally and sank a 110,000 ton ship. His denial arguably killed 30+ people.
January 20, 201213 yr As the ship sunk like an old man easing into a bath, the captain abandoned it like George Costanza fleeing a fire.
January 22, 201213 yr Talking about £100,000 insurance for every passenger on-board. That's a lot of money!
January 22, 201213 yr Author Something tells me none of that money will be seen by the vast majority of passengers for a very, very long time.
January 23, 201213 yr I have some familiarity with that industry, and the incompetence of the captain is only exceeded by his later display of cowardice.
January 23, 201213 yr Author You know it's dark out here, right? Oh Schettino? It's dark? You want to go home because it's dark? GET BACK ON THE DAMN SHIP.
