Buck vs Hayes: better arm.

Hayes 100% CS rate on 1 attempt this season...career 30% on 47 attempts

Buck 23% CS rate on 13 attempts...career 24% on 539 attempts

And they both weren't that good in the minors neither. Meanwhile, there's every reason to be excited about this little young catcher in Jupiter by the name of Jacob Realmuto:

.304 AVG | .429 OBP | .457 SLG | .885 OPS | 4 SB in 12 games | 16.1% BB% | 7.14% K%

all this while throwing out 50% of potential base stealers in 10 attempts (career 42% CS rate).

Future 5 tool player.

League average CS is right around 28%. Hayes is pretty good defensively and he calls good games.

Realmuto is going to be awesome, though. He was crazy good on defense last year. Almost threw out half of his runners. Guy's a stud.

I was always under the impression that a 30% CS rate was strong rather than average?

Maybe it used to be. That stat is always changing, obviously.

Buck is a journeyman - he obviously worked on and improved his ability to throw people out. And - he's really f***ing durable. There's a lot to be said for that. If Hayes were the better catcher he'd be starting - he's not. Why are we still having this debate?

Defensively, I personally believe Hayes is better. Buck has the better overall game, though.

No and no. Hayes is better on D. Stats prove it.
