100 IP 3.41 ERA 93 K's

His ERA has been in the mid 2's since the start of June. (9 games with 8 starts).

Given that he started the season poorly, I think he's one of those pitchers that many people forgot about with guys like Nicolino/Heaney/Descalfini doing what they're doing. Given that he was a college kid he could compete for a 4th or 5th spot in the rotation midway through next season. Also doesn't hurt that he's a lefty.

He certainly looks like he could contribute on the Major League level fairly soon, I've seen him pitch a couple of times if his breaking pitches are on he's very impressive

There's also some other interesting bullpen guys like Nick Wittgren, Scott McGough, Michael Brady (as BenderRobot has lauded several times), Steve Ames...

Then you have the starters who are doing some nice things like Conley, Brian Flynn. This is all before we deal with the more premium names in the mix like Jose, Turner, Heaney, Nicolino, DeSclafani, Eovaldi, Alvarez.

Sure, things can easily go wrong and not everyone is going to work out, but right now, at this time, the prospects are looking to be fairly good. I think we'd have to be pretty happy with the options we have on the horizon.

Another wild card in the mix is Arquimedes Caminero he is a 26 year old in Double A, but Ken Rosenthal said he throws like 98 MPH the other week. That was what got my attention about him, I'm not seeing first glance great numbers from him although his K/9 is 11.3 this season, but his BB/9 is also 4.4! You never know what they might work out with someone like him.

There's probably others as well.

1.14 WHIP this season. How about 8 hits and 1 earned run in his last 20 innings? Granted July has been the first month where he's really shined, but overall his K rate is holding steady through the minors and walks are even down a bit.

MLB has him as our #5 prospect, just behind Heaney & Nic. I think that's right.

I believe the main reason he doesn't get as much attention is some people think he's more likely to be a reliever. Thats not as exciting.

Probably the only reason people (including me) feel that way is due to our great starting pitching depth. I just can't see him getting in our rotation over a Nicolino or Heaney or even maybe a Flynn...

I hope the marlins start trading some of this SP depth for infield prospects. Not a lot of them, but it would be good to even out our pitching- hitters ratio.

Or hell, make a run for a good veteran with some years on his deal

  • 1 month later...

Conley another solid start last night, he'd given up 2 hits & no runs through 7. Sent him back out for the 8th and then brought in a reliever with 2 on & 2 outs who promptly gave up a 3-run homer. So his line looked a little more pedestrian but it was a good outing nonetheless. He's on a nice run since July 1.
