Erick
perhaps he knows how to play hockey and can take his skills to Russia? that would be about the only way I'd see him making that sort of money.
Sirspud
Maybe the Yankees should just not pay that. Maybe teams should simply stop paying guys 30 million a year when history shows there is no way they will live up to that.

Maybe teams should simply stop paying guys 30 million a year when history shows there is no way they will live up to that. This is why half the post season is made up of teams in the bottom half of MLB payroll that are relying on production from young, cheap players. It's also why the Yankees, with their huge payroll, are sitting at home.

Admin
I'm surprised that the Yankees won as many games as they did. They had really shitty offensive production and the rotation was nothing special.

Michael
Point remains is, even with injuries and being "so fucking old," they missed the playoffs by just four games. Teixeira [15 games] and Granderson [61 games] aren't exactly old, I might add, and they really missed these two bats [33 and 32 respectively]. 67 homers and 190 RBI from last year turned into 10 homers and 27 RBI this year from those two guys. That's a huge offensive lack of production, and with just one of those guys healthy, they probably make the playoffs this year, despite being "so fucking old." Wild Card
And yet the fact remains that those two expensive, older, and aging players missed significant time due to injuries. There go those pesky facts again.
Michael
Jeter and A-Rod, you mean? Yeah. They missed time due to injuries, and they're older. But, again, they missed 67 homers and 190 RBI from Granderson and Teixeira. This "old" team, healthy last year, won their division. That same "old" team, the year before, healthy, won their division. The Yankees just missed the playoffs by 4 games with Chris Stewart, Lyle Overbay, Eduardo Nunez, Jayson Nix, Vernon Wells, and Travis Hafner as regular starters. They only hit 144 homers, a 101 home run drop from the season before. That's HISTORIC. Yet, even with all that, they JUST missed the playoffs. There go those pesky facts again. Wild Card
They missed the playoffs. Are you not getting that? Next year they'll begin the same process the Phillies are going through. They are locked in to expensive, declining players, and it's no accident they missed the playoffs... Which I would venture to wager they will miss again in 2014. Michael
They *just* missed the playoffs, despite all the setbacks. That says a lot. Same team next year, with a healthy Granderson and Teixeira, and they'll possibly make it.

Same team next year, with a healthy Granderson and Teixeira, and they'll possibly make it. But they didn't make the playoffs, because their best players are getting old and can't stay on the field. And every team has a possibility to make it next year.
Erick
Having all those injuries was partially bad luck. There were plenty of old players in the big leagues who did not get injured. For example, their 43-year-old closer stayed healthy all year. Just because you're old doesn't mean you're going to get injured.

The same 43 yr old pitcher that almost had a career ending injury the year before and missed most of the '12 season? Being old means you're a shit load more likely to get injured by something that's not accidental, such as a wild pitch. That's not my opinion... Age deteriorates your body and that's an indisputable fact of life.

And on the pitching side, they were expecting a young Michael Pineda to return mid-season which never happened. Injuries are pretty unpredictable. The Marlins are young and they had a shitload of injuries, too.

But age, and the body deteriorating, is a huge problem they're going to have to face in the post-HGH world. Remember, a guy Jeter's age could take twice as long to recover from the same injury that a guy Hechavarria's age does just because that's nature. The same injury could be the result of bad luck, but the recovery time is the result of age.
