You saw the excitement tonight in the dugout with Bonds practically molesting Jose after his 8 innings. The dugout was jubilant. That isn't a team that thinks the season is over. That isn't a team you walk in and tell "Yeah we're gonna shut Stanton or Jose down preemptively" when they look at the standings and see the team is still alive.

 

 

Jose will be starting 5 days from now (unless he's held for Monday) if the fish are still alive. And he should.

 

 

The plan in ST was mapped out for Jose, they knew he could be at around 180 by now but he was scheduled to last the FULL season PLUS potential playoffs. 180 was never set in stone.

Yeah the thing is, though, the Marlins don't need to make the playoffs to prove you were wrong.  

 

Shutting down a healthy Fernandez, Stanton, Yelich etc would have..... 

 

A) really pissed off the player(s) that was shut down (with five off-season months fast approaching).  Do you think Stanton wants to stop hitting HR's?  Do you think a competitive spirit like Fernandez wants to rest for the next 2 weeks when he has a 5 month break coming up? C'mon dude.

B) further stomped on the hearts of Marlins fans who if not for the Mariners, would be the most playoff deprived fans in all of baseball 

 

C) It's bad for business.  Baseball = a business.  Would you shut down Stanton and Fernandez if you owned this team?  Would you want 300 people in the stands? Would you want the vast majority of your dwindling fan base wondering why you gave up?

That's an invalid response. It goes back to what I was saying, some here will say "I told you so" if/when they are eliminated. You didn't tell us so. We admit the chances are low. We keep saying there IS a chance though and until there isn't, no reason to shut them down.

Sometimes I look at this season and think you could make a list of every general thing that went wrong and then if you could take back one, just ONE of those things, we'd probably be right in this right now. If Dee Gordon actually produced, if Stanton didn't get hurt in Aug, if Cashner actually performed, if Rea didn't get hurt, if the bullpen wasn't such a train wreck, if the lineup could just score some more runs, if we had just one more solid starting pitcher, if Bour didn't get hurt, if Jose actually performed better on the road, if we could just beat the Braves and Phillies, etc etc. It feels today that 2 or 3 more wins would have made a difference and it's easy to think that reversing just one of those misfortunes could have kept us in this.

But Loria would rather get a lower value next year while hoping Jose starts the ASG than trade him now, get a great return and forego his chance at starting the ASG in a Miami uniform.
