SilverBullet
Will they ever let him go home on off days at least? Sucks to force the guy to remain inside the bullpen the entire season.

No, but he can eat for free at the Clevelander. Sucks for him it means a long walk across the field. Also, the servers will be home so he will have to serve himself. Erick
even if he's a better starter option than the starters (he is)? Yeah. I think our starters stink so I'm hoping Mattingly uses the staff unconventionally.
Valid
even if he's a better starter option than the starters (he is)? He's really not, to be honest. He's pretty much on par with them as a starter. He's actually basically another Tom Koehler as a starting pitcher. Phelps the starter is a completely different pitcher than Phelps the reliever. It's the first year in a long time he''s really been healthy as evidenced by his velo which maintained when the marlins stretched him out. He has 3 pitches which are all good when his fastball is ~94ish. He could easily be this team's 4th best starter and i think has upside for more than that. pollythewog
my dynasty, however, is very pleased as he's much more valuable as a rp than sp

If he's 3rd-4th starter talent level, a case can definitely be made that he's more valuable out of the pen as it is.

Erick
3-4th starters are more valuable than chapman/jensen I disagree. Just because the starter is throwing more innings doesn't make him more valuable.
pollythewog
OPS against as a starter last year, where he was made a starter in the middle of the fricken year, was .568 with a 30% strikeout rate. GTFO that he shouldn't have a chance and isn't the 3rd best starter on this team
pollythewog
I disagree. Just because the starter is throwing more innings doesn't make him more valuable. i agree with you on those two specifically I was being dramatic (although there are a good deal of #3s obvs). But the point is 200 IP of 3.50-3.75 ERA doesnt grow on trees

pollythewog
He also threw 24 innings as a starter. And the first couple starts, he was on a pitch limit. those numbers also mirrored his use in the pen. those swgstrk rates are legit

Erick
Adam Conley, minus the innings, pitched like a #3 starter last year imo. You could make a case that Phelps was more valuable to the staff than Conley.

Let's replace Conley with the next best option, justin nicolino for the same innings, and replace Phelps with Ellington or something. How do you think this story goes? Let's replace Conley with the next best option, justin nicolino for the same innings, and replace Phelps with Ellington or something. How do you think this story goes? About the same honestly. Ellington seems like he's nowhere near as good as Phelps. Elite relievers also don't grow on trees, and Phelps pitched like an elite reliever last year. Erick
so why not turn conley into a RP? He might become one long-term.
