Tejada

Featured Replies

Why the concern if the O's pay less or more? Now it all depends on if they are getting a Pudge/Lopez or Vlad. I hope they paid less or the reported 54 million rather than the 65. This deal WILL somewhat determine Vlad's contract.

Id be curious to see what Baltimore ponied up for Pudge if true.

If this is true, I cant see them beeing serious players for Vlad anymore

thanks for correcting the math.

I will honestly be surprised if you land Vlad. It will be one of those things I'll say, "I told you so."

Anyway, soriano, giambi, and a-rod had better seasons than Tejada in 2002.

Batista's highest ops ever was .848 was .861. They both are power hitting infielders with no obp.

So if you like an obp even lower than my man Sori, then by all means pay close to ten million for Tejada.

Pudge an O by 11 pm sportscenter

Lopez could sign with cubs

Vlad only has two suitors, florida, baltimore

chance that baltimore can take 3 of 4 ( vlad, tejada, IROD)

I hope the O's land Pudge. Don't want to see Boras' boy on the NL, or even worst the Cubs.

no word on Percival to O's

It appears if we don't get vlad, we don't get anyone

What? Why would Percival get traded to O's if they don't have a hitter the Angels want?

I hope not. :(

That contract looks a lot better now at 6yrs 54 million. Still to many years IMO. Yes Baltimore is one of my favorite teams rit after Boston. Of course the Marlins are first. So now you see why I'm excited, plus it helps us increase our chances of signing Vladdy.

I dont think they will sign all three. They need to use some of that money on pitchers if they want to compete because Lopez, Moss, Ainsworth aint going to do it.

plus maybe it's not hitters they are getting..

I think they're going after hitters because they already got the pitching. Plus lately there's no rumor in any websites that has Percival might get traded, I read something after his contract's up that he might retire.

haha. How bout I throw another wrinkle into this. Here's what the AP is reporting about the deal.

Although he talked about retiring after 2004 during last season, Troy Percival now says he hopes to play a few more years.

If miggy is 12 million a year, there is no way Vlad is 12 million. I'm going by my initial prediciotn:

5 year 75 million.

5 year 75 million. Yeah but I don't think the O's will be willing to spend that on Vlad. They spend that kind of money on Vlad and Tejada and they probably can't sign either catcher or any big name pitching help. Which is a priority for them.

That's good news, hope he stays an Angel (he's a good guy). :)

Any team would pass up on lopez or irod for Guerrerro, and Baltimore can afford to stretch an extra couple million for that. The marlins much less so.

If Guerrero's price falls to 12 million, who knows what teams might rejoin the Vlad sweepstakes.

I'm betting Baltimore would take Guerrero over a catcher. In fact, they might be able to afford all of them.

Yep false alarm :confused

nuts...

Do you have any news regarding and offer for Pudge, last I heard it was 3 years at 21 million.

I don't care what Gammons says. This would dissuade the O's from making Vlad a priority. But as long as they tease enough interest they could keep enough clubs from making offers that the Marlins could steal him away.

the tejada deal is 72 mil over 6 yrs

ESPN.com news services

NEW ORLEANS -- Former American League MVP Miguel Tejada agreed Sunday night to a six-year, $72 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles, leaving the Oakland Athletics for a team trying to rebuild.

Tejada must pass a physical to finalize the contract.

"Miguel continues the tradition of great Orioles shortstops. The cornerstone of the Orioles through the years has been our shortstops, and he certainly fits in that mold," vice president Mike Flanagan said.

Tejada receives a $12 million signing bonus, with $4 million payable in 2004 and $2 million each in 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2011.

He receives yearly salaries of $3 million in 2004, $9 million in 2005, $10 million in 2006, $12 million in 2007, $13 million in 2008 and $13 million in 2009.

Tejada made $5 million last season and $3.65 million in 2002.

The deal was the longest and richest of this offseason, though the Orioles still have more money to spend. Free agents Vladimir Guerrero, Ivan Rodriguez and Javy Lopez also have drawn Baltimore's attention.

Tejada, 27, hit .308 with 34 home runs and 131 RBIs in 2002 to help the A's win 103 games and the AL West. After the season, he won the MVP honor.

But last year he slumped to a .278 average with 27 homers and 106 RBIs, striking out 65 times and drawing 53 walks.

The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers had also expressed interest.

"How many chances do you get to add an MVP-caliber player to your club who wants to be there for a long time?" new Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said.

The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers had also expressed interest in Tejada. But Baltimore saw him as a key to improving its lot in the AL East, where it has finished next-to-last for six consecutive years, trailing the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Boston and New York have each made major moves this winter, and the Blue Jays have made several smaller moves to improve their pitching.

"You can't play dumb to the surroundings of what's going on around you," Mazzilli said. "But we have to think about our team."

The Orioles finished with just 71 wins in 2003 and were 30 games behind the AL East Division champion New York Yankees and 24 games in back of the wild card winning Boston Red Sox -- another division rival. With Toronto and Tampa Bay also addressing key needs this offseason, Baltimore was in danger of falling to the bottom of baseball's deepest division.
