If Vlad's back trouble is truly genuine, then I don't know about offering him a long term contract, but if the Marlins can I believe it's very important for them to sign him even if it's for a year or two because his signing is going to be crucial when it comes down to voters approving a new stadium.

 

Signing him would dramatically increase support for a new stadium in my opinion.

 

I know it's a tough situation, but if the Fish can sign him to a 2-3 year deal, that might be better than a 6-7 year deal.

Though the Baltimore Orioles reportedly have a five-year, $65 million offer on the table, Guerrero's camp has not eliminated the Marlins. If the Orioles do not meet his financial expectations, don't rule out Guerrero accepting a one-year, "special money" offer from the Marlins and re-testing the free-agent market in 2005.

 

Sound familiar? That was the same approach Pudge Rodriguez took last offseason, agreeing to a one-year deal after receiving a lukewarm reception in the open market.

 

A similar arrangement would be a calculated risk for Guerrero, who has had back problems and missed 50 games in 2003.

I think we should be bold and add a year to our 'Fudge' contracts, making Vlad a Marlin at least 2 seasons instead of 1. If the FO can sell it right, it could fit, because that way Vlad would have 2 years to show is back is healthy on grass and it would give us extra time to sign him to an extension if during the contract the FO feels it is warranted.

After the back injury and the treatment he got for it, Vlad came back and was as dominating as he ever was. I fully believe the team that ends up with Vlad is gonna end up having a bargain and will be happy they signed him.

Well, we do need an outfielder. We need another backup to go along with Banks. We will need one if any of one of them, or Choi or Lowell get injured. We will need one in a few years when Conine retires. We will need one in a year or two if a stadium deal isn't in place this spring and Lowell leaves. Does it have to be Vlad? No, but it needs to be addressed. And outside calling up thirty-something Abraham Nunez the club has no options within the system.
