Martinez was just fined $100,000 for incorrect paperwork filed to MLB, payable when he signs. I think he is chomping at the bit to get to ST...and who can blame him ?

And it can still be good news that the new ownership is emphasizing IFA. We gave away some of our IFA money in a deal for 2 likely 25 man roster players in Smith and Cooper and to get better return in the dee gordon trade when Seattle thought they were in the mix for Otani.  We got a good deal in both of those trades.   The bigger issue is overall an organizational philosophy that emphasizes the IFA market as a whole, not this particular free agent.  Martinez would be awesome, but as long as we are continual players from now on, as a small market team, that is what really counts.  Rangers have the total package as far as this particular guy goes.  Their farm system is more depleted recently with more of an opportunity at the major league level like us but unlike the yankees, but unlike both us and the yankees, he can start playing the second the minor league season starts as opposed to waiting a few months until he can sign with us.

 

It would be awesome to land this particular guy, obviously, but the bigger issue is an overall organizational philosophy of actually taking IFA seriously as opposed to consistently leaving money on the table.  All signs point to the rangers landing him though given their recent moves.

 

 

Exactly. We should be happy that we've changed our thinking and want to be players in the IFA market and will draft players regardless if they want an extra 1MM signing bonus or not given their slot, etc. That's the most important aspect. We won't be doing teardowns every offseason and it's not guarantee that if we had the same amount of money the Rangers had available, that'd he'd choose us. A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. Jeter traded away IFA money to get better players. He made the moves that had to be done and were going to be done and didn't worry about the 'maybes' when he had more important decisions to make.

 

Also, the Rangers gave away a young prospect for 250K to increase the offer for Martinez and they did the same with their previous trade for 250K. This is who they gave away for 250K with the Royals - "Pena, 19, has played in the Rangers’ system for the past three years. He first came stateside last year and has yet to pitch beyond the Rookie level. In thirty total frames in 2017, Pena pitched to a 2.70 ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9." Hardly a painless exercise for them. Time will tell if it was worth it for them.

Rangers are hoping to sign Cuban cf jp Martinez soon after he’s eligible tomorrow. They have about 2.8M to use. JPM could wait til July 2 signing period but Texas has inside track.
