December 17, 200322 yr If Vlad signs with Baltimore, who is left? Guillen just signed with Oakland. Sanders with St. Louis. Everett with Montreal. In my eyes, there are two big names left that are reasonable $5-7 per options: Javy and Palmeiro. Both could be signed to two year deals, and if we were willing to spend $13-14 Mill on Vlad, both can be had if we REALLY want them, although it is unlikely. The only problem I would have with either of them is the fact that we wouldn't be giving Castro and/or Choi the chance they deserve, and IF we believe one/both of them will do fairly well, the money can be spent elsewhere. Thoughts?
December 17, 200322 yr Why are you focusing on outfielders like sanders and everett? we need a catcher. as for first we have so many options there its almost funny.
December 17, 200322 yr Author Why are you focusing on outfielders like sanders and everett? we need a catcher. as for first we have so many options there its almost funny. Well I'm focusing on the OF because I'd rather get a bat out there and upgrade the defense as well and move Conine to 1B.
December 17, 200322 yr Author Jones couldn't hit a lefty if the pitch was 70 MPH and he was using a fungo bat. Other than that...
December 17, 200322 yr Author Has anyone signed Shannon Stewart? I wouldn't mind him hitting 3rd. Signed 3-year deal with the Twins.
December 17, 200322 yr I would bolster our bench and bullpen if we don't get Vlad. We could sign Benitez, a good lefty, and Galarraga to help Choi at 1st.
December 17, 200322 yr Guillen just signed with Oakland. He didn't sign with the A's, he signed with Angels (according to what he said to AP on an article of his signing, 2 years with $6 million dollars).
December 17, 200322 yr Author We could sign Benitez and trade for Farnsworth and solve our bullpen situation right there.
December 17, 200322 yr Jones couldn't hit a lefty if the pitch was 70 MPH and he was using a fungo bat. Other than that... gee WC we agree on something :thumbup
December 17, 200322 yr Raul Mondesi is still out there. Depending on the money he wants, that might not be a bad move. He's got a bit of an attitude probelm though, doesn't he? Or was that just a New York thing?
December 17, 200322 yr arthur rhodes is the premier lefty on the market. and there really isnt anyone to call up as a lefty.....if that were the case they would of gotten a call at some point last year.
December 17, 200322 yr Hard to say. I think he's had it since Los Angeles, but since his star has fallen, he may have been humbled a bit. Although I don't even think you guys NEED a rightfielder. Just bullpen help and a nice catcher like Damian Miller.
December 17, 200322 yr Raul Mondesi is still out there. getting him wouldnt be a bad idea... :mischief2
December 17, 200322 yr If we don't get Vlad, I'd like to see this club steer clear of the big name free agents and, as others have said, focus on not just improving the bullpen, but on getting a killer bullpen that will be considered as one of baseball's best. I'm half expecting the Marlins to see how Willingham does in spring training before signing a catcher. That is, unless they're addicted to J-Lo. Another priority is getting or calling up a young outfielder with good defense. I honestly think our offense is pretty decent. With exceptional pitching and defense, all we need are a couple of runs each game, and our offense can produce more than that. Someone mentioned getting Galarraga to help Choi at first, but I don't agree. Conine's been a first baseman for a while. He can provide Choi with all the help he needs.
December 17, 200322 yr Author Arthur Rhodes I have heard absolutely NOTHING on him all off-season. He must not be generating much interest. I thought he'd be a high priced guy, but if that's the case, he may come at a discount.
December 17, 200322 yr Author Just bullpen help and a nice catcher like Damian Miller. I would rather have Castro. Especially considering the price tags.
December 17, 200322 yr Rhodes has apparently been courted by the A's to be their closer. I find it hard to believe that teams are shying away from a left-handed reliever as...um...adequate as he is. I was joking about Miller. But maybe not. Take our catcher, please!
December 17, 200322 yr This just in: NEWS: December 16 SKINNY: Rhodes, who rumors had going to Oakland, has apparently signed a deal with Atlanta, pending a physical Tuesday, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
