this, among many other reasons, is why you go after the ton of cheap MLB caliber rotation guys that were available all offseason.  Front office did the right thing with the trades but they didnt do a good enough job supplementing the trades with capable veteran SP's to potentially bring back something in a midseason trade or to just field a competent MLB rotation for a few months.

Maybe they tried but the SP’s didn’t want to sign here.

Perhaps, but id find it hard to believe given the amount of guys out there for cheap that they couldnt have offered a million or 2 more than another team or given a guy a major league contract while others offered minor league deals.  Needed to make it happen, especially when the contracts are almost universally being signed at a value given the crazy free agent market this offseason.

They still have time to do this so let's see.
