December 12, 20196 yr I like Coop but I agree with this decision. They need a dependable option in the everyday lineup. Have to prepare like he won't be that.
December 13, 20196 yr I think this is a great spot for him. He’ll find 200-300 at bats somehow filling in (same thing Rojas did for the first couple years He was here and now he’s starting). Plus I also like the idea of a power bat on the bench for late in the game
December 15, 20196 yr Plus I also like the idea of a power bat on the bench for late in the game The only question is how good of a pinch hitter he will be in the long run. Some guys just can't do it.
December 15, 20196 yr Author Some social media comments ripping Mattingly for implying Coop is injury prone when his injuries have been freak accidents that he couldn't have prevented... makes you wonder though, how much of it is a durability thing and how much of it truly was just bad luck? I mean, there's a chance Coop never gets on the injured list ever again right? How do you determine which it's gonna be?
December 15, 20196 yr How do you determine which it's gonna be? You can't so you do what they are doing. You prepare like he will get hurt again and just hope he doesn't. But they can't go into another season with him penciled in as a starter and then lose him. If he stays healthy and productive, he probably ends up seeing a lot of ABs in the end.

True, you would think he could still win his job back with health and production.
December 15, 20196 yr True, you would think he could still win his job back with health and production. With his ability to play more than one position and the inevitability of an injury or poor production from someone else in the lineup, the opportunity should be there.
December 15, 20196 yr The only question is how good of a pinch hitter he will be in the long run. Some guys just can't do it. Yeah, definitely have a point. But he’s shown he can produce when called upon dating back to his limited duties with the Yankees So I’m optimistic.

I remember Brian Kenny arguing that Jacoby Elsbury's injury history with the Red Sox was from just freak injuries and may not indicate future injuries. Sometimes repeat injuries can hurt your body's durability regardless of the source.

Sometimes repeat injuries can hurt your body's durability regardless of the source. Absolutely true. Plus one of Cooper's injuries was repeat (wrist injury) and not necessarily from freak accidents. He does seem to be made of glass at times.
