December 6, 20223 yr Is he related to Miguel Rojas' favorite Quarterback, Josh Allen? If so, Miggy probably signed him himself.

December 7, 20223 yr To be fair here, if robo umpires are coming in 2024, he may be a perfect backup catcher. A guy who hits the ball and we don't have to worry about pitch framing/etc. The guy has raked at AAA for 3 years (https://www.fangraphs.com/players/austin-allen/18083/stats?position=C), so maybe there is something there with the bat if they can get away with 30-40 games behind the plate and maybe some 1B/DH backup time. Just saying here, this is a pretty reasonable and smart depth move. Maybe he is just a AAAA player, but given offensive limitations of catchers, there is real upside here. He's been buried behind Murphy after all. Also want to note here, I think this is strategic. Paul McIntosh is this same power bat/low defensive potential maybe catcher who they also just brought in (https://www.fangraphs.com/players/paul-mcintosh/sa3017372/stats?position=C). I think this is writing on the wall the robo umpires are coming and the Marlins are starting to profile this type of guy to be a backup type. Maybe these 2 guys aren't it, but I am buying purely offensive type backups in the future and for them to start taking swings on these guys.

I've seen some suggestions that with the robo-umps, one could even effectively put a third baseman or just someone who has a cannon for an arm behind the plate and have them play further back like a slow pitch softball catcher. Heh.

I'm just saying, a low probability guy that may mash if everything goes right, or can't hit Henry who is much better defensively. If the robo umps are coming, don't we want the former? I mean this is a drop in the bucket of what we need to do, but this is showing some real thought I think as to the players they are looking to target. But like, do the important ones now - CF, SS, other random position MLB upgrade etc.
