His thought is to sign him to a very team friendly deal to tamp down what the team would pay him over the next X years.

To follow up on this, if they can sign him to a reasonable set deal instead of "risking" him having great performances and going through arb (with skyrocketing prices due to performance), it's not a bad idea to try to sign him early, even if you don't get any/many FA years.

Definitely a Rays way of thinking, and something we've advocated for a while of signing younger guys early to keep them around on reasonable deals.

Being only $15M apart on eury is absolutely embarrassing they didn’t get it done. Oh well whatever

That is the whole budget for the next 5 offseasons.

Unless it's annually in which case I get that.

But they'll bridge it if it's $15M total.

This place is very quiet, apparently nobody wants to talk about this team until they really do something.

How long have you been here now? This is normal offseason.

But people said it's an abnormal Marlins off-season.

what are we supposed to talk about if there’s no news?

Iglesias signed for 1/16 and Helsley signed for 2/28, so if Marlins think those numbers too high then I don't think they're really want to spend, if the rules of the CBA can't force Marlins to spend then nothing else would.

It really is still so perplexing they let Bruce Sherman buy this team knowing his financial limitations.

It's so illogical MLB and other 29 owners choose poor guy Sherman (net worth 500 million) and not rich guy Mas (net worth 1 billion).

Neither worth it.

it was 100% due to Jeter being attached and nothing else.

As pointed out above, had Jeter not been involved, I do think that the Mas group would've gotten the team. It's nice to see that they actually spend in MLS......payrolls are obviously at different levels between the two leagues, but they've put their money where their mouth is and have gone out and gotten big name talent (for a lot of money) to put on the Inter Miami roster. They're playing for the MLS cup on Saturday......it would've been nice to have had that with the Marlins for a change.

I dont get why they didn't just work out combining the two ownership groups. Like what the Dodgers have.

IIRC, Jeter didn't want anything to do with that. He wanted to be the guy running the show, and I don't think that'd have happened with the Mas Brothers' group.

I wish Jeter a very merry go fuck himself.

Harsh reality, 3/45

It was interesting to see the marlins twitter goofballs who thought fish would get Devin on a 1 year “come back” “prove yourself” deal. Everything about Devin says his era was a complete fluke.

fish are going need go multi year for Fairbanks which seems quits unlikely

It's not harsh reality - it was never realistic to begin with.
