Cubs agree to deal with Ryan Dempster

January 21, 2004

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs and right-hander Ryan Dempster agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract that includes a team option for 2005.

Dempster, 26, spent the final two months last season on the Cincinnati Reds' disabled list with a bone chip and a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and was released in November.

Dempster made his last start July 28 and had elbow ligament-replacement surgery Aug. 4. Prior to going on the DL, he was 3-7 in 22 games, including 20 starts.

For his career, Dempster is 50-55 with eight complete games and a 5.01 ERA. He was traded to Cincinnati in 2002 from Florida. He was picked for the NL All-Star team in 2000, his first full major league season.

He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the third round of the 1995 amateur draft and moved quickly through the minors, making his major league debut for the Marlins on May 23, 1998.

I know, right? LOL

The Cubs continue in their quest to sign every former Marlins player imaginable. Must be the D-Train thing bugs them so much they're hoping to get some measure of revenge.

Oh wait, no it's probably just getting beat in the NLCS. :thumbup

As much as i hate to say it, that is a GOOD rotation. Really good.

Dempster won't likely pitch in 2004. he had Tommy John done. he should be 100% for 05 though. i think this is a great signing, you look at his last 2 seasons and they're abysmal. but then when you consider the fact that with the ammount of scar tissue that had formed on the ligament when doctors went in to remove bone chips, they estimated he's been in need of TJ for at least a season and a half, which makes me think those numbers the last 2 seasons are incredibly good.

Great. We Cubs fans need a quick and easy way to insult players who don't perform. Estes was tough last year, if another pitcher did poorly, we just said he had an Estesian performance, or he was particularly Estesque today. Now, we can just go with Ryan Dumpster.

so basicly they could eb paying dempster 1 season to not do alot, pending on the option (which will probably depend on how he comes back from surgery)

exactly, and assuming he's 100% afterword, his stuff is good enough to where he should be able to hover around a 4.30 ERA and eat 190+ innings. love this deal, and had been clamoring at RedsZone.com and baseball-fever.com for the Reds to make this exact signing since November.

He has a great sinker but I doubt that he will ever become an all-star again. I met him before and he's a great guy. Best of luck even though I hate the Cubs.

I think it was a slider you were thinkink of...

If you can't beat um...join um :p

:lol :lol God Dempster blows.

First bad move the Cubs have made all offseason.

who said anything about Dempster even being in the rotation?

bring him back slowly place him in the BP, get short bursts of Dempster variety (crazy wild or dominating) and then dangle Farnsworth, if he succeeds it's good for them, if not they pay 250 K to say goodbye.
