January 23, 200422 yr i know we cant sign pudge to a major league contract till may 1, 2004 but can we sign him to a minor league contract..and if we can whats the max you can sign someone to a minor leauge contract...
January 23, 200422 yr i've seen conflicting reports on this...for example, CNNSI yesteday said it would be legal for him to sign to a minor-league deal. but one thing seems certain: whether it's for a minor league deal, a major league deal, or a cup of coffee, the FO cannot TALK to Pudge until May 1st, that much seems to be certain. So, unless there is an open contract sitting on Pudge's desk right now waiting for his signature (and i'm not even sure THAT would be legal) it would appear that signing him to a minor-league deal before May 1st is an impossiblity.
January 23, 200422 yr the only way I see Pudge returning is for him to be an FA by May/1. Not good chances, but you never know
January 24, 200422 yr He can sign a minor league contract. He can rejoin the organization. He just can't be on the 25-man active major league roster (maybe even 40) until May 1st. Look at Toby Borland. We didn't offer him arbitration, and signed him to a minor league deal after the deadline. To answer the original question, I don't know. It can't be too much. Less than the major league minimum (300K) definetly. They can add incentives onto the contract for making the major league team and how many games and awards won and whatnot. That may be one way around it.
January 24, 200422 yr At any rate, signing Pudge to a minor league contract is far-fetched....it ain't gonna happen. Pudge in all likelihood is NOT going to be a Marlin this year.
January 24, 200422 yr He can sign what is called a split contract. The contract is split between his minor league salary and what he will make if called up by the big league team. it is prorated so the time he's not in the majors they don't have to pay the higher rate.

So how would this work?

Look at Toby Borland. We didn't offer him arbitration, and signed him to a minor league deal after the deadline. that's not correct. a team is allowed to non-tender an arbitration-eligible player who was under team control and re-sign the player immediately afterward. we did that with toby borland, just as oakland did that with mark redman. borland was signed to a minor league contract just as a player of his caliber should be... there is no may 1 restriction on his return. returning to pudge, the rules state that a player whose contract has expired and is eligible to become a free agent (like pudge) must be re-signed or offered arbitration by that early december deadline or the team forfeits all rights to negotiate with the player until may 1. that's the significance of the may 1 date. i am unfamiliar with this rumored minor league contract loophole from that one article, so if anyone can find anything to support it, i'd love to learn what all this is about.
January 25, 200422 yr That would be true if Toby Borland was under our control. However he had acquired enough service time that he was in the same situation as Pudge and Urbina. Borland was not offered arbitration along with Pudge and Urbina on December 7th. The date for players under team control like Penny and Pavano was December 20-something. There have been past examples, but none come to mind. Some probably happened this year, just no one with the attention that Pudge draws.

January 25, 200422 yr from what espn insider says. The Marlins offer to Pudge, whether it was 3yrs 28 mil or 2 yrs with a 3rd option totalling to 24 mil is still on the table. Which from what there saying is that he can accept the deal. Cant Pudge still play with the team though? I mean i thought the rule was that the marlins cant negotiate with pudge untill May 1st. So if he accepts the marlins former offer wouldnt he be able to play opening dat?

So if he accepts the marlins former offer wouldnt he be able to play opening dat? Nope. He can't sign the deal with the Marlins until May 1st. Here's the wording from the CBA: If the former Club of the free agent does not so offer [arbitration], it shall not be entitled and shall all rights to negotiate with, and sign, the free agent, until the succeeding May 1.
January 26, 200422 yr Pudge signing a minor league contract: LOL. Unbelievable comment. Yes, the Marlins will sign Pudge for a deal that will pay him less than 300K. Yes, Pudge sign a minor league deal to remain with the Marlins. Why not play for free Pudge.
January 26, 200422 yr Guys, just stop trying to fnd loopholes in the may 1st thing- if he's coming back, it's gonna be on may 1st.
January 26, 200422 yr Sounds like the ESPN insider is OFF since Beinfest repeatedly says that Pudge's money is NOT on the table, and NOT available. Team is at its payroll limit, adding a couple of players for depth being the only real moves remaining.
January 26, 200422 yr Mike Redmond took a pay cut to stay here. He is going to make under a $1 million in 2004, and he will be playing. He could have had more elsewhere or asked for a raise like Pudge and been let go by the Marlins, but he didn't. Next time any of you Castro or Pudge lovers say that Redmond shouldn't be with the team, remember that. He hasn't been accrused of any crime, and he isn't greedy.

January 26, 200422 yr Beinfest repeatedly has said there isn't money. It was in the stories in the three newspapers and the web site when Mark Redman was traded. It was in the stories on Dec. 8 after Pudge didn't come back. Beinfest was quote as saying that they don't have this supposed money for Pudge lying around. Beinfest repeatedly has said the team isn't in the market for a "big ticket item" was his quote regarding high priced free agents. Marlins have spent to their budget. If you don't know these basic facts, you obviously aren't following this team very closely.

January 26, 200422 yr if the marlins have a payroll of 47 million as of now ( w/o arbitration players), then we have more money and, I can give you link, something you obviously can't do: Here That $47 million is as bogus as the $90 million that Berardino kept throwing around all summer. That's for the players already under contract. It's only 17 players. One of the guys technically not under contract is Josh Beckett - he's not included in the 17. He'll make at least $2 million. When you add up the entire roster - including good guesses for the guys like Beckett, Cabrera, and Willis - it comes to about $53 million. Can you provide a link where anybody in the front office is quoted as saying the payroll is $60 million? Because I have yet to see one. All I've seen is conjecture in the press with quotes like "sources believe the Marlins payroll is $60 million."
January 26, 200422 yr As always, I provide the proof that you gullible fools need and request, yet while Beinfest says the money isn't there, you will believe it is. So read this story, the budget is noted near the bottom. The money for Pudge isn't there. But go ahead and believe it is. Maybe they can get Alex Fernandez to be the fifth starter til AJ comes back. Maybe we can bring back Chuck Carr, and Bryan Harvey. Harvey would solidify the bullpen. And we can bring back Gary Sheffield. There is a loophole, the Yankees can trade Shef to the Marlins, if he consents. Why not bring Shef back since he is about the best player the franchise ever had? Why stop with Pudge, bring back Kevin Brown too. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...s_fla&fext=.jsp
January 26, 200422 yr thank you for the Sun Sentinel link. When is Rick Reed signing with the Marlins, as reported first in the Sun Sentinel? When is Brad Penny getting his severely damaged right shoulder operated on? I believe the Sun Sentinel's Berardino reported that Penny was damaged goods. Seems that was about a year ago, when is Penny getting that corrected? I hope soon because Penny may ONLY win 15 or more games with that wonded wing he is working with now. Oh by the way, when is Luis Castillo signing with the Cubs? The Sun Sentinel had that one too. I can go on and on and on and on. Thanks for the Sun Sentinel counting the payroll. Funny that it wasn't updated to not that Pavano (3.8 mil) and Penny (3.725 mil) were added. Then Beckett's 2 mil is going into the pot. Keep adding up your payroll, and it will be around 54-55 mil as the team projects. When in that range, the team will have some money to add a player or two as the year unfolds, like they did last year. Now, Mr. Budget Man, where is the 8 or so mil for Pudge?
