3 Minor League Free Agents Signed

Featured Replies

According to Rotoworld the Marlins have signed RHP Nelson Cruz, and OFs Armando Rios and Mike Colangelo. Cruz will compete for a bullpen spot and Rios has a chance to compete for a reserve OF spot with Williams, Nunez, and Christenson.

Cruz was decent out of the pen for the Astros for in 2001 and 2002. He was a disaster with the Rockies last year. He should have a shot at a spot in the pen. Rios is an interesting player, he was pretty highly thought of with the Giants a few years back and had some decent years off the bench. He can also play center, which will benefit him. The battle for the last couple of spots should be fun to watch.

Didn't Rios lead the all-star voting (or maybe he was just in the top three among OFs) despite being injured a few years ago?

Since we're discussing signings by the Marlins I thought I'd add this although it's not totally appropriate.

from Rotoworld:

Red Sox signed infielder Jesus Medrano to a minor league contract.

Medrano, who had spent his entire career in the Marlins organization, was viewed as a candidate to eventually replace Luis Castillo after a 2002 season in which he hit .297/.411/.413 for Double-A Portland. He wasn't nearly so impressive last season, batting .251/.356/.351 in 73 games for Double-A Carolina and .228/.310/.298 in 31 games for Triple-A Albuquerque, and the Marlins elected not to protect him on their 40-man roster. The Red Sox are curious to see whether he can turn it around this year, but his record prior to his excellent 2002 would seem to indicate that it probably won't happen.

No!!! Jesus Medrano has gone to the dark side!

He must have liked playing in Portland... :confused

I bet that's where they'll start him. :(

I think he was like top 5 and he had only played like 3 games so far

Heres some stats on Rios and Cruz from last year...

Armando Rios

International League ? Charlotte Knights 07/12 to 08/31

AVG G AB R H RBI 2B 3B HR BB SO SB CS

.323 45 155 23 50 30 9 1 6 14 30 5 6

Nelson Cruz

Pacific Coast League ? Colorado Springs Sky Sox 08/17 to 09/01

W L SV ERA G IP H R ER BB KO HR

1 2 0 7.20 4 15.0 24 18 12 3 10 3

So if someone's not on the 40-man roster, any team can sign him? The way that article sounds, that's what Boston did.

More Stats:

Armando Rios, ML White Sox:

.212, 22 for 104, 4 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 5 BB, 13 K,

Nelson Cruz, ML Rockies:

3-5, 7.21 ERA, 20 G, 7 GS, 53.2 IP, 65 H, 43 ER, 11 BB, 38 K

Mike Colangelo, AAA Blue Jays:

.281, 87 for 310, 42 R, 20 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR, 45 RBI, 37 BB, 74 K, 5 SB

Medrano was probably a 6 year minor league free agent. A player dropped off the 40 man roster must go through waivers, if they clear wiavers, I believe the team then has the option of sending the player to the minors or releasing them.

I remember that Rios guy when he was with the pirates.

He could probably beat out nunez for the OF Job.

Nelson Cruz....didn't he suck with rockies?

oh jeez

if he does that Nunez should retire

nelson cruz kinda sucks.

They all "kinda" suck or they wouldn't be signing minor league contracts 10 days before spring training.

anyway me and my bro are going to some ST games so I will see how they do.

Who else is going to ST games?

Armando Rios?

He would be great as a 5th outfielder or backup player. If i am not mistaken he was with the pirates....

Hey those 3 signings cant hurt.
