Italians were lower than blacks at one point and we had it VERY BAD. We didn't even earn the title "white" until a generation and a half ago TOPS. Know what you are talking about before you speak.

When Italians first immigrated to America, they were given worse work than blacks and Irish. Obviously by saying "lower than", I'm talking about the anglo american conception, so don't get such a large bug stuck up your butt.

Cyberlina, unless your family immigrated here around the early 1900s to NY, you have no right to pretend you know what you're talking about.

italians were never not considered human.

I agree with that. However, it is true that they did have a bad rap for a while. I don't think you could go as far to say that it was worst than the blacks... No race or ethnic group has had it or still has it as bad as the blacks. I don't know the first Italian slave. Personally, I think they Indians got the worst out of everyone.

I personally believe Cubans are among the most hated people in the world. But not the worst treated, there is a difference.

Haitians are more disliked then Cubans.

I said among, and that is debatable.

remind me what job is worse than slavery, if you want to call that a job.

:lol

what, have you been living in upstate NY your whole life or someth--oh wait...

there was never a time when society looked down upon italians moreso than blacks.

I go to college in upstate NY, my entire Italian side of the family is from the Bronx. I live not far from it the rest of the year alkazoid.

And obviously you people have a misconception of time. BLACKS WEREN'T SLAVES IN THE EARLY 1900S. At this time, new immigrants like Italians were looked upon in a lower fashion, had a harder time getting work, and didn't speak english- making it harder for them in America.

Chinese, Italians, and maybe the Irish were all initially in a lower socioeconomic class than blacks and were looked upon in a lower fashion.

So the following are not true:

there was never a time when society looked down upon italians moreso than blacks.

You have to back-off a little, Italians or Hispanics for that matter were and have never been treated like animals.

-Blacks weren't slaves when they came over.

I agree with this:

Personally, I think they Indians got the worst out of everyone.

Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when you make a statement as idiotic as "Italians were lower than blacks at one point"! That's pure BS, and I'd be surprised if you actually typed that without laughing to yourself a few times. Yeah, Italians were hated so badly that Joe Dimaggio was the country's freakin' hero for most of the '40s and '50s.

Yeah, because we all know New York City = the entire US. Around the 1900s, the Irish were practically running NYC, so I don't see how you can say they were of a lower class than blacks. It wasn't Irish people getting lynched in the Draft Riots 40 years earlier.

His nickname was "the great dego", that's equivalent to calling a black guy "the great n****r."

When it comes to sports, ethnicity is less of an issue. For example, people openly hated black people loved willy mays.

The Italians initially were in a lower strata than blacks. This is a fact. They made less money, lived in worse slums, and DIDN'T speak english. Who has it worse now, a newly arrived immigrant from Latavia or a random black guy? Black guys had it bad back then, but not as bad as the millions of newly arrived italian immigrants initially. That's all I am saying.

Irish perpetrated the riots, so it was one group of extremely poor people versus another.

ya blacks had it easier than italians in 1900.

thats why they needed a civil rights movement to try and get some rights in the 1960s.

while your statement might be true in one local sorianofan....

its very much arguable that italians across the board in the United States had it rougher than blacks.

Well, italians weren't around the country at first. We were confined to eastern city ghettos. even today, almost every italian in america is either in conneticut, new york, new jersey, or florida. Simpyl put, in urban areas the italians had it worse initially, and the ghettos with 14 hour work days were as bad as they got.

They were given worse jobs, faced the same racism, and had less money, and lived initally in worse neighborhoods. That makes them lower. And yes, ALL immigrants (especially Asians) initially dealt with this. People forget that it wasn't until too long ago until Italians became white.

When it comes to sports, ethnicity is less of an issue. For example, people openly hated black people loved willy mays. uh, i don't remember italians not being allowed to play in the major leagues up until the late 40s. i don't remember joe dimaggio getting cussed out, abused, and treated like s*** by a large portion of the fans in the bronx and even receiving frequent death threats like jackie robinson did when he entered the scene in brooklyn. people treated blacks like s*** in freakin brooklyn for christs sake... racism toward blacks certainly wasn't confined to the south where most blacks lived.

i dont remember italians having to drink from special fountains and sit in the back of the bus anywhere.

it's not even close... i'm completely awestruck that i'm even having an argument about this.

They were given worse jobs, faced the same racism, and had less money, and lived initally in worse neighborhoods. That makes them lower. And yes, ALL immigrants (especially Asians) initially dealt with this. People forget that it wasn't until too long ago until Italians became white.

and yet that was still better than blacks.

next.

youre white?

damn, with a name like isi / isabel, i woulda thought for sure you had some latina in ya.

Yupp, I'm a 100% blue eyed blonde haired german lol

But yeah I know my name is spanish but I spell it different cuz I spell it with 2 L's. If you hear my middle name, you woulda thought I was black! :lol well that's what everyone else says. is that you, sheniqua????

:o

*shields miggysladi from 02pac* that aint funny man :shifty

soriano this is probably the most idiotic argument ever. for any group, ANY ethnic group to say they were treated worse than blacks in this country is complete lunacy and bulls***.

about dimaggio, he was considered classy and graceful when people talked about his personality and how he played the game.

hank aaron was called a lazy boy because he took his time to the plate and moody for his similar personality. that little detail says something
