March 7, 200422 yr hey soriano, answer my question: in 1900, which group was discriminated against more, in general: blacks or italians?
March 7, 200422 yr um... Sorianofan As a future historian...you should be more careful with your thesis statements. You make a bold statement like you do and provide no concrete proof to back it up. That is irresponsible. You would and never could get away with that in the professional world. It is common knowledge that blacks have had it worse than any other group throughout American history from colonial times to the 1950s....at that point you can start to really argue other groups. Like I said, the only other group you could make that blanket statement for and possibly get away with it would be with Native Americans and MAYBE the Chinese...but even that is a huge stretch. Now in this case, when you make such a provocative statement the burden of proof is definitely on YOU.
March 7, 200422 yr guys, isn't it "common knowledge" that immigrants have it harder than anyone? are you afraid to answer the question? it's rather simple.
March 7, 200422 yr answer: definitely immigrants. they had nothing when they came here- they didn't leave their country for no reason.
March 7, 200422 yr um, there were definitely KKK lynchings in New Jersey (therefore, I assume NY). I did a research paper on the KKK in the early 1900s, and I actually used examples of KKK activities in Jersey in my paper. And, as Sorianofan is horribly, embarassingly making an ass of himself, I will say one thing. The KKK did hate Italians and were bigots against them, as one of the key things KKK hated was Catholics (they hated "k****, Koons, and Katholics"). Italians tend to be Catholic. But once again, they were more harassed than lynched. Italians had it bad. Irish had it bad. Eastern Europeans (slavs, etc.) had it bad. Japanese had it bad. Chinese had it bad. Vietnamese had it bad. Blacks had it HORRIBLE.
March 7, 200422 yr Italians had it bad. Irish had it bad. Eastern Europeans (slavs, etc.) had it bad. Japanese had it bad. Chinese had it bad. Vietnamese had it bad. Blacks had it HORRIBLE. I couldn't agree more.
March 7, 200422 yr Italians had it bad. Irish had it bad. Eastern Europeans (slavs, etc.) had it bad. Japanese had it bad. Chinese had it bad. Vietnamese had it bad. Blacks had it HORRIBLE. bingo. nobody is debating whether italian immigrants had it bad. its all about how blacks had it the worst.
March 9, 200422 yr Unless lynchings killed more people than tentament conditions, overwork, starvation, and disease, I cannot agree.
March 9, 200422 yr lynchings alone did not kill many people. I wish I could say that blacks only concern was random lynchings. But, alas, that was not the case. I love how you mention overwork. That is nice. Blacks never were overworked.
March 9, 200422 yr Guys, I'm not saying that blacks were sitting back on recliners and living the good life while Italians slaved themselves building bridges and manufacturing steel. However who were the child laborers? IMMIGRANT CHILDREN. Who had the worst working conditions, lived in worse conditions, worked the longest hours, and for the least money? IMMIGRANTS. Immigrants also faced racism, though I don't think that would include lynchings, though Italians were lynched in New Orleans. However, with all things assessed, Italians and basically IMMIGRANTS were worse off. Can you honestly say the family reduced to selling their children to child labor, with the crappier home being shared with 20 people and a public bathroom, and all that other crap doesn't have it worse off? Don't be ridiculous. People have this notion that blacks are inherently ALWAYS worse off. Well that was not always true and it is not true now.
March 11, 200422 yr I see it that immigrants having less money, worse jobs, worse living conditions, higher poverty, and racism as self evident facts. Unless someone shows me that blacks were more so economically disadvantaged than immigrants, which is completely untrue, there's nothing more I can say. The above, if true as I contend, proves my thesis.
March 11, 200422 yr you never quit do you? i tried to give you help sorianofan. again you present this provacative thesis and you present no hard proof to back up your thesis. the burden of proof is still on YOU. wake up.
March 11, 200422 yr has anyone been in one? would you get involved in one? does anyone have a problem with them and if so why? I've been in 2 interracial relationships before, I see nothing wrong with it! :thumbup
March 11, 200422 yr selling children into hard labor? Last time I checked, slaves (and the children of slaves...who also happened to be slaves) were sold and traded. Now, granted, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe is not an accurate account of slavery, but the fact remains that slaves were put out to work fields from sunrise to sundown in 90+ degree heat (Georgia, North Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, etc. is AT LEAST 90 every day in the summer) and living in crappy slave quarters packed in with people that you are not related to. The worst part? The slaves didnt ask for that! The immigrants came over on their own....they didnt get put through those horrifying slave trade ships, or weren't born into slavery because of their skin color!
March 11, 200422 yr I was under the assumption that you understood how bad things were for blacks in the South. Apparently, I assumed wrong.
March 12, 200422 yr Das Texan: It is a fact that immigrants had less money, worse jobs, worse living conditions, and ect. These things don't need numbers, because it is a known fact that immigrants came with mostly nothing (no exaggeration) and the blacks already here had a little something. How many pictures of child laborers do you see are black? I haven't see one in my life. Do they exist? Probably if not definitely. However, the vast majority of such labor being immigrant children PROVES that immigrants were worse off. Don't beleive me? Search up on some muchraker photographs and such. Furman: Blacks were 40 years removed from slavery when new immigration hit it's peak. Your point is irrelevant.
March 12, 200422 yr 40 years removed from LEGALIZED slavery. They still hadn't gotten very far in society because of such things as poll tax, literacy tests, Jim Crow laws, separate but "equal", etc. And the kicker is this: The great migration towards the north just put a lot of blacks in the same position as many immigrants...except worse. And I dont remember Italians not being allowed in certain states. Hell, before the War for Southern Independence, Illinois didn't allow FREE blacks into their state!
