Congratulations, your gullbility is being used as a bargaining chip for the agent, because there are people and radio reports out of Detroit declaring the Marlins are in the hunt for Pudge. Funny how the Marlins could be "in the hunt" for Pudge when they can't negotiate until May 1. Then again, don't let facts sway your simple opinions. You assimiliate well in society because you are easily manipulated and follow the leader nicely.

I agree with the guy that it would be very stupid to trade for a guy and pay him the amount of money we didn't want to give up in the 1st place, I don't think anyone's arguing that, and that won't happen I assure you. But I can still see a couple of scenarios where Pudge could still end up with the marlins. We'll really get to see how much he enjoyed winning last year. Finally, a poster with a bit of intelligence. Dating back to last season: Lowell would be traded. Penny has major shoulder trouble.

for the most part, Pudge was liked a lot. It's not that we hate him and want him gone. Of course he would be great in any lineup. But at what price? The Pudge supporters seem to lose sight of why Pudge isn't getting 10 mil from the Marlins. To pay Pudge 10 mil means the team couldn't afford their starters. To lock up Pudge for four years at 10 mil a season means Beckett wouldn't be a Marlin in a year or two. The point is Pudge isn't worth what he is asking. At least to teh Marlins he isn't. If he signs with the Tigers, then he would have to prove hhis worth to that organization. It is shaping up as a completely lousy choice for spending money. Then again, the Tigers are desperate and Pudge is desperate to get his 40 mil. So the two sides deserve each other.

The Babe Ruth sale was NOT stupid. It was ECONOMIC reality for the time. Obviously, the Red Sox got the raw end. But at the time, Boston needed the money more than they needed Ruth. Plus, if you knew anything about baseball, the Red Sox won the World Series in 1918 and had already won a few titles. Of course they didn't know they would never win again. First, Pudge was insulted for being offered a pay cut. So say the Tigers sign Pudge for 40 mil over 4 years, the same thing he wanted from Florida but didn't get. Then the Marlins turn around and acquire that contract and trade a player or players or prospects to the Tigers? Yes, that is ABSOLUTELY STUPID. I don't mean to burst your bubble for dreaming. You say 5 percent chance? What do you mean by that? There is ZERO chance. The ONLY chance is if PUDGE does a complete about face and says he will NOT sign elsewhere and take his chances of negotiating with the Marlins on May 1. For that to happen, Pudge would commit to hearing NO other offers. Then on May 1, he would have to negotiate with the Marlins who say there isn't 8 mil sitting around for him. But go ahead and believe this will happen. This isn't some lottery sweepstakes with odds. Pudge is negotiating with the Tigers and maybe the Mariners. The Marlins are NOT a factor. Trading for Pudge would be the stupidest move in history. The ONLY way I'd sign Pudge is at a bargain basement discount, less than 4 mil. If he is miraculously out there on May 1, as some without all their capacities believe, he isn't worth a full year's salary. I'd make Pudge crawl back, apologize and sign for less than 4 mil. Anyone that would want Pudge for a huge contract at the expense of not being able to sign Beckett down the road is blinded and not rooting for the best interest of the team. Pudge gave us one great year. We gave him a title. Pudge decided to flee for more money. If he can't get it elsewhere, it's not up to the Marlins to make sure he has enough cash to build his wife a statue too.

During the expected one-hour visit with the President, catcher Ivan Rodriguez is scheduled to travel to Washington D.C. with the team. But just because the 32-year-old who was the MVP of the NLCS is joining the Marlins for the day doesn't mean he will wear teal and black this season. General manager Admin Beinfest on Thursday dismissed speculation that Rodriguez will somehow rejoin the team, either on May 1 or through a trade. Because the Marlins were unable to reach agreement with Rodriguez by a Dec. 7 deadline, the 10-time All-Star became a free agent. The earliest the Marlins could talk with him again would be May 1, an unlikely situation because Rodriguez is in the midst of negotiations with the Tigers. "There is no deal," Beinfest said. "I think it was unfortunate because this was a great marriage. I think for all the reasons except money, Pudge should be a Marlin." The Tigers reportedly have a four-year, $40 million offer to Rodriguez, who rejected a two-year, $16 million proposal from the Marlins in early December. Florida's offer is believed to have included a third year option for another $8 million. "He is a free agent," Beinfest said. "We cannot talk to him." Beinfest also diffused rumors that a team could sign Rodriguez and then trade him to Florida. Beinfest says that would circumvent a league rule, and is not possible. So as speculation about where Rodriguez ends up this season continues, the Marlins are planning to enter Spring Training with Ramon Castro and Mike Redmond sharing the catcher position. Are we so desperate to believe the Marlins want to get Pudge back so badly they will trade prospects and pick up a 40 mil contract for Pudge when they refused signing him for that in December. Pudge is a non factor for the Marlins. This is a non story that is pure fiction. But if it's in print, it goes to show a sucker is born every minute, because a lot of you are being played for fools thinking pipedreams can happen.

Another Berardino classic. So if I got this straight, Pudge says no to 2 yrs 16 mil with option for 3 yr 24. Agent Boras says there are 4 yrs 40 mil offers out there, finds none from teams like the O's. Then the lowly Tigers "reportedly" have 4 yr 40 mil. Pudge, who was insulted about taking a "pay cut" with Marlins, turns down his initial demands and wants to wait it out til May 1 to rejoin the Marlins. And the Marlins, who say they don't have that extra 8 mil lying around any more, are willing to pay Pudge 8 mil to miss the first month plus spring training. There are no sources in this story. Not even "industry," whoever those are (ticket takers, program sellers?). We get a Jack McKeon quote saying he'd love Pudge back. Of course he would. Lots of teams would want Pudge for a reasonable price. Fans who say 30 mil over 3 years are just as misguided as Pudge. I'd leave well enough alone and move on without Pudge than in any way cripple the chances of signing Beckett or Burnett in a few years. But the wishful thinkers have so little business sense, they gladly double pay what a guy is worth. Based on the author of this story, I wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers held a press conference in a day or two to announce the Pudge signing.

Beckett has yet to sign too. Josh made 1.725 last year. Will see a raise. Team isn't going after any big names now. Doesn't make sense and no big names are left, besides Maddux. As is, Marlins will contend. If team needs to add on, they have some cash put aside to make some modest upgrades. That 60 mil number has never been confirmed. It's always been an estimate.

signing pitchers long term when they are arbitration eligible is economic suicide for a team like the Marlins. Marlins have Penny under control this year and next. Next year, Beckett becomes arb eligible and Burnett is fifth year arb. Since all the position players are under club control for next year, the Marlins are in great shape for the future. They can see how Pav performs this year, and then try to go long term at a reasonable price. If he commands too much, they will let him go and fill in another fifth starter. For the next two seasons, the Marlins have a rotation of Beckett, Penny, AJ, D Train. Not too shabby. Plus, fans seem to forget that Alex has signed for two years. That means, Alex, Luis, Mikey, JP, Conine are signed through 2005. Don't bother telling me that Mikey hinges on the stadium. That will get done. If it's not done, then the team should move. But it will get done by March 15. Choi and Miggie will be under club control not yet arb eligible. So team would be better positioned to sign some pitchers longer term at that point.

Sauerbeck has been damaged goods for a long time. That's why he has attracted zero interest. He's done probably for the year.

Great for team morale to avoid arbitration. Hats off to front office to avoid arbitration hearings completely. Now everyone goes into the spring focused on winning the division. When AJ joins the rotation likely by May 1 the rotation will be as strong as anyone in baseball. Penny and Pav have chance to outstanding seasons.

As much as D Lee did, it's time to let it go. He was traded and frankly he isn't worth 6.9 mil. What people will miss most about D is his defense. Offensively he ks too much and he is a notoriously slow starter. I'm not convinced he belts 40 in Wrigley. I wish him well, but his offense is spotty. He wasn't very good in clutch situations or with runners in scoring position. Sure he had a few key hits in the playoffs, but not many. Offensively, Pudge is a greater loss. Fact is Marlins desperately need some lefty power. First base is a position to plug in a lefty bat. Choi promises to be a better hitter, especially at Pro Player. Defensively, D is the best. But that doesn't mean Lowell and Alex will see their defensive stats slide drastically. Good luck to D. Better luck to Hee Seop.
