I'm speculating here, but maybe Loria/Admin told Pudge that they are leaving the door open, and they will be willing to offer the same deal on May 1 if he still was available.

 

Not sure, that's the only thing I can think off for this to work. I think Pudge is not sure on what to do.

as some one who sat in my room on a Saturday night until 10:30 pm listening to ESPN Radio for updates, i would say that i certainly had a touch of it myself.

I think right now Pudge is just waiting for Seattle. Now that they have more money available, they will no doubt make an offer for him. If its close to our offer, I think he will take it.

 

 

If Pudge does resign and they decide to go with three catchers again, Ill be pissed. Its about time Castro, if not convicted, got his chance.

Are we so desperate to believe the Marlins want to get Pudge back so badly they will trade prospects and pick up a 40 mil contract for Pudge when they refused signing him for that in December. Pudge is a non factor for the Marlins. This is a non story that is pure fiction. But if it's in print, it goes to show a sucker is born every minute, because a lot of you are being played for fools thinking pipedreams can happen.

I'm going to go with that, and take this one step further:

 

Berardino is the one reporter most involved with the Marlins in the local media; like him or hate him, it's true he's the guy who's the main beat writer for the Marlins. My only guess here is that Loria and Beinfest are using this article as a way to get around the tampering charges and "negotiate" with Pudge and Boras, because it seems Pudge doesn't want to go to Detroit, won't get much money from Chicago, and Seattle has Ben Davis so they may not jump all over themselves to get Pudge at a high rate. It seems to me we're saying to Pudge "either take the $40 mil because that's the best you'll get, or come back to us because we'll still outbid the Cubs and Mariners." :mischief2

MIAMI -- The Marlins will be honored by President Bush Friday at the White House for winning the World Series.

During the expected one-hour visit with the President, catcher Ivan Rodriguez is scheduled to travel to Washington D.C. with the team. But just because the 32-year-old who was the MVP of the NLCS is joining the Marlins for the day doesn't mean he will wear teal and black this season.

 

General manager Admin Beinfest on Thursday dismissed speculation that Rodriguez will somehow rejoin the team, either on May 1 or through a trade.

 

Because the Marlins were unable to reach agreement with Rodriguez by a Dec. 7 deadline, the 10-time All-Star became a free agent. The earliest the Marlins could talk with him again would be May 1, an unlikely situation because Rodriguez is in the midst of negotiations with the Tigers.

 

"There is no deal," Beinfest said. "I think it was unfortunate because this was a great marriage. I think for all the reasons except money, Pudge should be a Marlin."

 

The Tigers reportedly have a four-year, $40 million offer to Rodriguez, who rejected a two-year, $16 million proposal from the Marlins in early December. Florida's offer is believed to have included a third year option for another $8 million.

 

"He is a free agent," Beinfest said. "We cannot talk to him."

 

Beinfest also diffused rumors that a team could sign Rodriguez and then trade him to Florida. Beinfest says that would circumvent a league rule, and is not possible.

 

So as speculation about where Rodriguez ends up this season continues, the Marlins are planning to enter Spring Training with Ramon Castro and Mike Redmond sharing the catcher position.

Boras has too big of an ego to allow Pudge to go back to the Marlins offer after spurning it and claiming that he could get a bigger sum elsewhere. Even if it's Detroit, just so Boras can say "Ha, I told you we'd get $10 mil a year."

I have a very difficult time seeing how Pudge is going to wait until May 1 to find out if he can work things out with the Marlins. I wouldn't even give this the 25% chance that Berardino is touting.

 

Right now I would guess it is a 0% chance. If Pudge is still around as we get into ST, then the chance will increase. And in any event, no way should we consider increasing the offer we left on the table. 8/$24M was fair enough.

well, this espn article is just a wire quote of berardino's article.

 

personally i dont think it's going to happen. pudge can get a lot more than our offer of 2/$16 + $8, so i can't imagine him waiting until may 1 and jeopardizing his FA chances with other clubs just to take the offer he angrily refused months ago. on that same token, i can't see the marlins sweetening the deal much more than that, so i think it's safe to say we'll be pudgeless in 2004.

 

i could see him coming back in 2005, but not this year.

This whole time I have said I would love pudge back but he is greedy.

Yeah, got no problem with Pudge coming back....at the right price. We have good alternatives and have no reason to break the bank to get him here. There are other higher priority needs.....like a left reliever, 5th starter.....

We were the only team that wanted to give him a chance.

His family lives in Miami.

He won a World Series here.

We gave him a very genorous offer.

And now he turns it down to get an extra couple of bucks and bad mouths the organization.

Nobody hates Pudge...and yes I am grateful for his contributions. What I don't like is the greed he portrayed. The Marlins gave him a very fair offer, given the market conditions.....and he snubbed his nose at it.....and in not a very graceful way. That is where I have my problem.

 

But if he comes back at the right price...then all sins are forgiven.
