According to the Sun-Sentinel, our payroll now stands at $47.74M.

 

With a month to go before Marlins pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the team has 17 players under contract for $36.74 million. That includes Lenny Harris and Gerald Williams, both of whom signed minor league deals.

 

Add deferred money owed Pudge Rodriguez ($3 million) and Mike Hampton ($10 million) and subtract $2 million coming from the Rockies, and the Marlins' 2004 payroll stands at $47.74 million.

 

We were expected to spend $60M for this year's team, which puts us about $12M under budget. We still have to round out our roster, I hope we dont slouch with this extra money - but dont overspend either. I hate to say it, but Maddux is still available, and there are a couple of arms still out there that are intriguing (Sauerbeck, Osuna, Astacio, Finley, Burkett, Veres, Person...).

 

There is also Takatsu, a reliever from Japan which has drawn some interest:

 

Takatsu, who turned 35 in November, surpassed Kazuhiro Sasaki for the all-time saves mark last season (260). They are the only Japanese pitchers with more than 200 career saves. Though the Marlins already have a closer in Armando Benitez, Takatsu is willing to accept a set-up role

The operative phrase in the article is "17 players under contract".

 

Baseball teams must have 25 players on the active roster (plus guys on the disabled list plus guys signed to minor league contracts) so that number is short the salaries for eight (8) players.

 

When all is said and done you can expect payroll to be around $53 million, plus or minus. Guys like Cabrera and Willis (to name a few) are not signed yet.

Maddux is no longer worth 10 million dollars, and don't waste your money on Person. Osuna (though injury prone) would be a decent pick up because he's not all that bad (his mother's health disturbed him all season), but you guys should of really signed Urbina to shore up that pen.

 

I'm an Urbina fan, but come on, who doesn't like that change up?

Free agent Scott Sauerbeck reportedly will undergo shoulder surgery next week and miss the season. This could explain some of his problems from the second half of last season. Sauerbeck has failed physicals for both the Cubs and Reds this winter, forcing him to undergo surgery.

Beckett has yet to sign too. Josh made 1.725 last year. Will see a raise. Team isn't going after any big names now. Doesn't make sense and no big names are left, besides Maddux. As is, Marlins will contend. If team needs to add on, they have some cash put aside to make some modest upgrades. That 60 mil number has never been confirmed. It's always been an estimate.

what is meant by "not signed yet" is that they don't have a salary figure for next year. They're not going anywhere (obviously) but their money isn't figured into the $47.74 mil figure...

Willis and Cabrera will add about another 800,000 to the payroll. Team could reward them with 400,000.

46M sounds about right.

 

Players without 2004 contracts: Beckett, Willis, Choi, Miggy, Spooney, Neal, Bump, Phelps, Neu. Marlins can sign them for any amount, but not less than 20% of their 2003 wage. Miggy and Willis won't make a million each, Pujols didn't even make that much. Think more 4 or 5 hundred thousand for them. Beckett somewhere between 2 and 2.5 million.

Choi has no contract. We retain his rights and can offer him any deal. Mordecai has a base salary of 425K with incentives for games played. He'll most definetly reach the first one to get 500K and could get the full 600K. Conine's was never released. It's supposed to be heavily deferred. The Herald projected it to be worth 3 million this year. And Pierre has a 2.3M contract. Though it's not clear if his bonus for placing 10th in MVP voting was to paid at the end of last year or added to this year or both. He gets somewhere between 2.3 and 2.7M anyhow.

Willis and Cabrera will, at the most, make $350,000 each in 2004.

 

With everyone signed, expect the payroll in-between $51-52 Million, but I invision one or two somewhat big pitcher signings, as well as a cheap starting-caliber outfielder or first baseman (Eric Karros).

 

Orlando Hernandez is having workouts for teams at UM, and I would think he is a major possibility. I don't see us getting Takatsu, but Maels Rodriguez could be a quiet but huge possibility.

If you trust a forum (besides proven insiders, which no website has as credible insiders as this), then you are almost a pure idiot.

 

One, every Cuban pitchers first choice to play is Miami. No doubt about it, there is no question.

 

Two, he can want all he wants, but it's what's offered that matters. The Yankees won't offer another cuban pitcher as much as they did Contreras, especially a question mark such as Maels.

Sauerbeck going down sucks - for him...wow...see it does pay to sign early.

 

Yes, I know we only have 17 players under contract - but you cant expect the rest of the roster to be filled out and cost us $12M. That said, Maddux would only be good for a year, in my opinion, because AJ will be fully recovered next season (no, I dont expect him to be his usual self this season which means NOT fully recovered) and Maddux would only force us to deal a starter or let Pavano go (which I am not willing to do, especially at how much it will cost to sign Maddux). In other words, I never expected Maddux to sign here, but the idea was gaining steam, at least in my mind.

 

And yes, this $60M cap is not verified, only speculated. I have been saying that all offseason. Could be lower, could be higher. I think Loria is willing to go over for the right reason - which I dont see right now.

 

No on Maels Rodriguez. Nothing more than a closer in most scouts books, and who knows about his durability - pitched 255IP+ last year. Too rich for us. Looks like we will be shoring up our team with ST invitees...still think there are some intriguing options out there - Chuck Finley (what is he, 40?!).
