  1. i'd rather burn out his arm in a 50-60 win season than overwork one of the guys on the farm ....... sign him up and have him bring some of his friends
  2. christ not Reynolds. they could chuck that "pitching and defense" slogan... Reynolds is a defensive highlight machine ........ sure, he's an absolutely horrible defender and can blow routine plays with a pretty frequent basis - but he'll make some spectacular plays as well Out here we'd watch the d'backs games and would see how brutal he was .... then we'd watch a highlight show going through plays of the month and it seemed like 25% of all the plays were his He's an entertaining kind of bad ...... his defense is like his offense ......
  3. On a side note, the dodgers TV deal is rumored to be around $7B over 25 years (i'm sure they'll be a scale, but a cool $280M a year on average) ...... not sure why I'd be compelled to post that in a thread about the future possibility of the Marlins retaining Stanton unless it just helps reinforce that if he hits the open market he'll most likely be heading home
  4. yes - because buying away that option helps the team move the players and their inflated contracts so much easier guys waive their NTC all the time when their current situation goes south ..... seems like it's pretty self defeating for the marlins it will limit the players who will sign there, it ends up being compensated for in the contract and it makes the contract more difficult to move the bigger issue is that the marlins now have a really respected veteran speaking out against them in public .... not to mention the undercurrent that stanton alluded to in respect to their operations throughout the league they had one chance to change all of this and they blew it in epic fashion in one season ..... good job guys
  5. for every 5 bases he steals the team will contemplate washing his jersey
  6. wow - did you see all the extra loot JP could pull in on this team .... they are definitely providing incentive to field a championship team next year Pierre would earn a $25,000 bonus if he's an All-Star, $25,000 each for winning a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger, $50,000 if he's an LCS MVP, $100,000 if he's the World Series MVP and $100,000 if he's the league MVP. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8653126/miami-marlins-salary-dump-trade-toronto-blue-jays-finalized

and by 7 years I'm counting the 4 games by johnson in 2007, the 14 in 2008 and the 9 in 2011 I'm also counting the 6, 10 & 16 game seasons for Sanchez between 07 and 09 nolasco only had 1 season where he didn't pitch much - but with his escalating WHIP, decreasing strikeouts and enormous contract we are going to make him the cornerstone pitcher - anyone remember 2009, opening day starter - beat the nats (look how good they are) 1-0 ........... 34,323 in attendance and the team won 87 games ........ that is what I'm talking about - ricky absolutely stays my god - i never realized Volstad had 102 starts as a Marlin ........ yikes

Has anyone considered rickys feelings in all of this? He has more wins or strikeouts than any of pitcher in Marlins history - has seen the players he came over with jettisoned - has seen this team work to remove pretty much any tradeable piece and then some .... yet no one wants to trade for him I'm sure he's screaming at the wall - "why or why won't anyone trade for me ... what is wrong with me!!!"

If ever there was a reason to veto the trade, that interview was it. No commitment to re-investing money. Henderson Alvarez = Anderson Perez. If you're gonna make a trade like this, at least get the players' names right, asshole. He isnt really a baseball guy so its not a big deal to not know the name. Now if it was beinfest that would be one thing but he already said he isnt a baseball guy and trusts his scouts. He's still representing the team. No offense, but can even you, off the top of your head name all 7 players we got back? I forget the 7th guy's name (Descalawhatever), but the first six aren't difficult to remember. At least get the guy's on the big-league roster next year, correctly. Is that so difficult? Henderson Alvarez has actually pitched in the big leagues for about two years now. exactly - when you are the representative of a team and you know you're going to be answering questions about a trade, you know you need to defend the trade and will be talking about the future of the team - at least know the players names - especially those who are MLB ready that you are going to tout as starting talent for next years team being prepared isn't that difficult guy should listen to some of the radio interviews from Derrick Hall out here in AZ - that's a guy, who although "not a baseball guy" absolutely owns his radio spots and does an incredible job at reaching out to the community ..... a big part of Samsons role and something he just doesn't give a crap about

I think it would be mildly amusing if Stanton was walked every single plate appearance - at least in Miami - let the other organizations state that the only marketable player on the team will have zero home highlights or impact with his bat ..... stay at home kids, giancarlo isn't going to make the monstrosity sing tonight

As for the false question - win with a low payroll or lose with a high payroll define "win" & "lose" I would rather see an organization with a compass that is founded on providing a good product to their community, become integrated within their community and work for the long term success of the franchise within the community ....... don't make yourself a side show, don't proclaim you're one thing and then immediately proclaim your something different there are so many degrees to things ....... i'd like to see a team that makes sound financial decisions, using FAs to fill gaps, retains their top talent and provides a foundation for long term success If you are a consistent playoff team at $50m in payroll, that would be great .... however, no fan would be happy if they were a piece away and you didn't try to pay for it and bump that payroll up to $70m to grab a championship while raking in all that additional revenue You could have that same annual playoff contender with a $150m payroll, the organization tried to add pieces, have held guys and are now looking at the choice of either retooling and driving the payroll down to $100M or keeping the status quo and driving the payroll up to $180m .... again, I don't think the fans would hold a grudge if you said "we gave it a go, but can't pay more for the same expected result - we need to tweak the design and try something different" Those would all be normal reactions ....... this team doesn't think like that though ....... it's more of a mentality of "why pay $80M to win 70-80 games when we can pay $30M to win 50-60 games and make a whole lot more money" It's smart for their short term pockets - but horrible for the future of baseball in south Florida with collateral damage thrown throughout the entire league

I feel for you guys who actually have to listen to this stuff .... we've had some of it bleed out here, but generally I can avoid the screaming masses and even more importantly the direct quotes from team execs that describe their GI tract from their current view........
  13. Too bad cespedes wasn't available this winter ..... No doubt would be there about playing in the majors ..... Also a shame i haven't made a fall league game this year to see the 2013 Marlins
  14. hurricanes defense continues to be brutal .... i know they made a big deal about some of the young secondary players and a couple of them look decent ... but they need to gain some experience and get so much more help from the front 7 ....... there is no impact on this defense at all
  15. yeah - he said it was something he struggled with ...... he'll now be a 4-5 hour drive from SD (and obviously a much shorter flight), not to mention he'll play a divisional set there and at the dodgers which should provide some more family ease in reality though when things started going south I think he just started fishing for reasons and came up with a whole lot of things that didn't feel the same to when he had success so he lashed out at the external instead of improving the internal
  16. A couple points - the document you sign when getting married is a "marriage license" - this has different ramifications than a "civil union" ........ I long thought that a compromise would be to change the verbiage of the legal contract entirely for everyone and use that as the basis for laws, insurance, etc. However, there is also resistance to that (mainly emotional) by both sides ..... at this point though, a civil union doesn't carry the same weight and is not adequete also - we do have waterfront property here in AZ and it's relatively expensive (and usually completely manmade) ..... if you have some at a good price, I could be interested
  17. I received a text from my buddy yesterday saying something along the lines "you don't need to worry about bell blowing saves for the marlins next year, d'backs just picked him up......." my question wasn't about who came back, but how much money was going out ......... $13M of the $21M isn't bad - sucks that this move didn't work out and they had to cut bait, but that's what it is he may turn it around and be servicible, but doubt AZ will get $6.5M per year value out of the guy I find some aspects interesting about this ........ the first is he's a lot closer to SD, he has no expectations over the contract, no pressure on him to be anything other than just another guy, a division he's familiar with and he gets a clean slate - things went south pretty quickly and he was unable to help himself get it right however, he was very clear that he felt like he deserved a chance to close - AZ doesn't see this as his future, aside for an insurance role - he still has a large enough contract and AZ is fairly budget minded - ken kendrick can be pretty outspoken from the organizational standpoint (blasting both stephen drew and justin upton last year) and Gibby is fairly unconventional as a manager, so he may still have some difficulties fitting in if things go south or if he feels he's not getting his deserved opportunity
  18. Only problem is your faith has zero to do with what should be or shouldn't be legal Also keep in mind, that there is the religious ceremony of marriage and there is the legal contract of marriage no one is asking for the church to change what they want to do - but just not deny that two consenting adults can enter into a marriage contract and have the legal protections it affords and remedies when it ends there is a huge difference there ....... once that difference is understood and accepted I don't see how anyone can really oppose it and it will eventually be the norm - until then the courts will have to continue to cycle through things like DOMA
  19. Could also look into an Alum Block or specialty products for bumps/irritation I've heard good things about bump stopper 2 ..... but I have no first hand experience
  20. then go for a safety razor - limits the amount of damage you can do to yourself or upgrade your soap & aftershaves, do a pre-shave treatment and use a fresh cartridge
  21. All razors are free/cheap it's the refill cartridges that get you ...... they are actually kept under lock & key at our local walgreens I remember on my 18th birthday I got a brand new mach whatever in the mail with 5 replacement blades - that became my razor for a long time I tried a switch to schick on a razor that promised to be more smooth as my skin can get a bit sensitive and that thing beat the hell out my face - so back to teh gillette the fun thing is that I switched to the double edged razor around the same time my inlaws came for a visit and my father in law forgot his razor - so I gave him my fusion and a pack of fresh blades to use ........ at first he resisted because he thought it was my new wetshaving stuff, then he resisted because it just seemed like too much technology that he'd never used ......... apparently he still shaved with the single blade disposables - so he fell in love with the cartridge the same time I was leaving them behind
  22. I wet-shave I use a double edged safety razor and really have no issues with cuts .... I bought a "nick stick" that I've rarely used. However, there have been times where I've given myself some not so fun razor burn. It does take some time to learn, but I enjoy it Probably the hardest part is learning to build a good lather - the lather is really important to shave quality. From there you just need to work on your technique, learn your face and find the tools that work the best. This is a great place as a resource for both straight razor and safety razor shaving http://badgerandblade.com/ Lots of info for newbies as well. There are some definite adjustments. The first is time - a quick spray of gunk out of a can, smeared across your face and then a pass with the cart doesn't take much in time, skill or thought. You'll need all of these while wet-shaving. Prepare to spend 20-30 minutes on a shave. The goal is beard reduction, so expect multiple passes. Let the weight of the razor do the work. With cart systems the temptation is to push down to keep the multiple blades in contact and get out early. With a single cutting blade and a razor that has weight on the top, you hold the razor just hard enough to control it without pushing it. Lather - this takes time, practice & patience. Cut with the grain - the grain can go in all sorts of directions, cutting against or across the grain at any real length can be uncomfortable Personally, I like it. The only drawback is the time it takes with me not being a morning person, but someone who likes a morning shower/shave. Blades are cheap - you'll go through them and try out many different types to find out what blade works best with your razor and your beard Razors aren't super expensive - in the $20-$40 range. Brushes can be expensive or reasonable - same with creams, soap, aftershave, etc Here is the razor I use I have big hands and like the additional weight - not really aggressive by blade placement, but there is a bit more weight to it than many safety razors ..... Parker 99R - about $30 Proraso is a good, reasonable cream/soap to have on hand - lathers really easily, pleasant smelling and not too expensive That's part of the fun though is finding different soaps and aftershaves that work for you ....... I'm currently on a bit of a bay rum kick
  23. I think they can beat FSU - I think they can beat a lot of teams It's just a matter of if they kill themselves with penalties and the game gets out of hand They've shown they can get a big lead, blow a big lead, come back and get blown out The ND game was a very winnable - but they couldn't get out of their own way early and then simply wore down The defense is horrible - I know it will take time for the secondary to develop and the team is really young, but there needs to be a huge talent upgrade ....... I don't know if it's because he doesn't have any help or if expectations were simply too high, but even chickillo hasn't looked that impressive, expected him to grow after last year but he's getting pushed around in the run game and isn't finishing when he does get to the QB on passing plays The DL looks awful and if they don't get better the secondary can't succeed ....... this has been a problem for a while ..... I like a lot o the pieces on offense and am really happy with fisch and morris has improved greatly ........ just need to hang onto the ball and execute the play on offense ....... I think this will happen as the group matures and the offense will be fine and balanced The defense I'm not sure I see a light at the end of the tunnel - they are just really bad right now
  24. Oh how I miss the days of the Elmira Pioneers (even though I'm on the opposite side of the country now...........)
