  2. Junk is going for the Devin Smeltzer Marlins achievement award. Remember that long line of MLB The Show made up player names we had last year pitching: Emanuel, Tyler, Anderson, Baumann. He's AAA depth and merely buying time until Eury gets back and the prospects are ready. I'd rather see Mazur, Fitterer, and Fulton take their lumps than have to believe somebdoy named Kyle Tyler is a real player. The AA rotation looks to be absolutely loaded though so most likely a few of those guys will be ready to make the leap next year. (White, Snelling, Dax?, Miller, Milbrandt, Olson and/or Noble at some point with Keyner Benitez and Aidan May not far behind. Rest assured, we are coming. Like the great philosopher Axl Rose said, "all we need is a little patience"
  3. Younger, better velocity, higher spin rates. Doesn't show it in the stats. Teams keep picking him up like the hot crazy chick because they "can fix him".
  4. I hope Dax Fulton can put together a healthy season this year.
  5. Max Acosta named prospect to watch by MLB.com. Which means nothing. He's one our 11 shortstop prospects. Should be lots of minor league guys seeing action today with the split squad games.
  6. Xavier Edwards established himself as the Marlins shortstop with a solid second half of the season. There are concerns about his defense, in particular his throwing/arm strength. He should hit well enough and steal enough bags to secure regular playing time. Swiss Army knife utility man Javier Sanoja has a bench spot that is his to lose. He is young and has exciting contact/batter's eye numbers. The future at shortstop is very bright for the Marlins. This is probably the deepest position throughout the minors with several potential plus-WAR prospects in the mix. Jared Serna raised some eyebrows with his play after coming over in the Jaxx Chisholm trade. Max Acosta, Echedry Vargas, and Starlyn Caba were all part of the trade haul from jettisoning Jake Burger and Jesus Luzardo. All three project as future major leaguers with Caba's glove being the biggest plus tool. Homegrown signee Fabian Lopez is an intriguing long-term project and should see his first year of domestic baseball. Cuban Luis Manuel Leon and bonus baby Andrew Salas should be making their debuts. Jack Winkler and Jay Beshears are upgrades and potential major leaguers as well. There is a logjam at shortstop by design as the Marlins went over toolsy athletic players. Likely there will be some position changes in the future.

  8. Sorry to disappoint you I'm just a Day 1 die hard fan in too deep to change at this point in my life. If you can help me get paid for spending way too much time on a lightly populated message board where most of the posters' glasses are half-empty, I'm all ears.
  9. Seth Martinez career as a Marlin is over. Brett de Geus is back, for the time being.
  10. It's only based on last year's spring training pics and his injuries but I don't think eddy has that dog in him, the work ethic and mentality of someone like sandy, unfortunately.
  11. Eddy's stuff is so good but the problem when he is even a hair off it all goes sideways. Has elite stuff, but probably will never be able to put it together.
  12. Gone is the proven bat and power of Jake Burger, although he was transitioning more to 1B and DH for the future anyway. Former Oriole prospect Connor Norby, picked up in the Trevor Rogers trade, is the heir apparent and it is his position to lose. Free agent pick up Eric Wagaman could see some starts at the hot corner as well as the outfield. Jonah Bride is serviceable in a pinch although he'll focus more on 1B and DH. Power prospect Deyvison De Los Santos has played a lot of games in the minors at third but that does not look to be his position going forward. As for prospects, first-round bust Jacob Berry looks to be making a position move off third. Graham Pauley has shown flashes and is the best of the lot in the upper minors. Yiddi Cappe's luster is fading and he is running out of time to prove his value. Cherift Neymoure, Breiyas Dean, and Joseph Tailor are all lottery tickets that are years away, if ever.

  14. Acosta is one of the three players we got in the Burger trade. He's a middle infielder who played 3/4 of his games at SS and the other 1/4 at 2b. He played in AA at the age of 21 and he is a rare prospect whose numbers keep improving as he climbs level. Likely will start in AAA, but you should care because he's a pretty good bet to be a Marlin and probably will get substantial playing time.
  15. pretty exciting seeing all these new faces. Snelling, Acosta, etc. the future is bright indeed.
  16. Wouldn't mind the Marlins taking a flyer on Alexander Canario who was DFA'ed by the Cubs. Big swing and miss concerns, health concerns, and his numbers have decreased as he's moved up levels. Lots of upside though and he's still only 24. Would be a nice test to see what our new "player development" can do.
  17. Not the biggest Otto Lopez fan but he was one of our better, and steadier, players last year and gave us pretty solid defense consistently. His numbers aren't gaudy but he has earned his starting spot for the time being. Sanoja is one of my favorite players and should be all over the diamond. His versatility is a plus and he will only be 22 all season long. He could do some shuttling between Miami and Jacksonville but here is hoping he gets enough ABs to show if he can be a future difference maker. Ronny Simon was a good depth signing and will probably end up in Miami at some point. He's more a 4-A player and doesn't have the plate discipline of Sanoja but has a bit of pop in his bat. He's still relatively young and is an upgrade from Brujan at the plate if not the field. The future projections have Gage Miller as our best second base prospect. However, there are about 20 middle infielders and some of them could move from shortstop to second base. Carter Johnson is likely the best for the bunch. Xavier Edwards defensive limitations may eventually move him from SS to 2B as well.

  22. The future is obviously Agustin Ramirez and Joe Mack. Expect both to start in AAA with Fortes and Rule 5 pickup Hicks starting in the majors. If Hicks doesn't make it and/or a trade is worked out where he is optioned Ramirez would likely get the first shot. Losing Banfield kind of sucks as he showed some flashes but can't blame either party for moving on when he was always the third best option. Ignoffo is the wild card. He is older for the levels he was playing but he has done nothing but hit at every level. Robledo is the best of the lot of the lower level catchers but is a long way away.
