1. I think there are quite a few insightful comments on this thread. Those include: That the weather inhibits attendance; That the stadium (Huizenga involvement, bad lease, location, etc.) inhibits attendance; That the history of dismantling the team inhibits attendance; That our fan base supports the team with less fervor than the fan bases in other locations. My bigggest disagreement is with the last item. It is true only if you consider the population here as equivalent to the population in the other similar size markets. But it's not. Miami-Dade has 2.2 milion people. Of those, 10%% are Haitian, who are soccer fans and have little interest in baseball; 60% are Latino, about half of whom come from baseball loving cultures (Cubans) while most of the rest come from places where baseball is as minor a sport as soccer is here. Miami-Dade also is about 20% African American, and articles have been written in all the major sports journals about the dramatic decrease in baseball fans in the Black community over the last 40 years. In other words, over 50% of the poplation starts with little or no interest in going to a game. Miami also is the poorest major city in the country, and has more alternative venues seeking the entertainment dollar that do exist than most other similar-sized cities. So, comparing our attendance to what teams draw in similar sized markets is really like comparing apples to oranges. Immigrants struggling to make it, who grew up as soccer fans, are not likely to spend their hard earned dollars at a baseball game when they can instead go to a restaurant and watch their beloved soccer teams like my Argentine friends do. I am sure a similar analysis could be made of Broward, alhough the percentage of "natural" baseball fans would be higher. So we must face the fact that the Marlins have it a lot tougher than most franchises, and have to "make" baseball fans by converting the many residents who did not grow up with the game. I think they are doing a great job, with what is the smallest MLB market in terms of fans who grew up playing and following the game. And I think the part of the population that did grow up with baseball as one of the "big" sports supports the team as well as fans anywhere else. 900496 That sums it up. There isn't an enough baseball market here and being a poor city with many latin people trying to survive doesn't help. Time is the key for more fans. If your family year income were less than $25,000 like many latin families you wouldn't spend your hard earned money in a baseball game EVEN if you are the greatest marlins fan.
2. Congrats Jorg, enjoy your time here even if it's for a short time now. You'll be back soon!
3. Why don't you get Jack's and VDLS? I'd get Cabs, Delgado, and LoDuca
4. when is game 2 supposed to start 894800 6:35pm Same lineup as the first game except for Jorg
5. think of a lineup with a-rod and miggy....WOW!!!!!! 891592 Yeah, Marlins will win the World Series for sure with that line-up!!!! :whistle 892189 lol way to think positive :thumbup 892199 wat can we trade 4 him ...wonders... :mischief2 892210 I'll give them Jack and bill
6. 293 edit: where can I see yestarday stat and winner?
7. Just something to keep in mind, if the wildcard winner comes from the NL East, they would play the Cardinals in the first round. 889617 That's why we need to win the NL east and worry about the wildcard later on.
8. Lets not screw this lead now AJ.
9. Game time, let's go marlins!!!
10. The guy just had a bad outing. He can't be 100% everyday. And it's not like he WILL for sure get beated on the 3rd straight outing.
11. Mat Morris last 4 starts stats: (1-3) 5.19 ERA. Hope he continues with that bad streak.
12. Something screwy. Particularly since it goes back to Spring Training. Seems like time and Roster is being wasted, unnecessarily. 887149 if Delgado can play this weekend, and we somehow DL him today, he would still be out till mid next week if he only needs 2 more days off we could be shooting ourselves in the foot on the other hand, if he needs another 5-6 games off, then he needs to go on the DL 887154 I think they're holding out hope that he's ready for the Cincy series and Colorado series, where he becomes a difference maker in those ballparks. 887157 heh.... You become a difference maker in those smallparks 887160 Yeah, well if the team with the last at bat has a decided advantage (as they do) you want to have your big guys available. Even if it's for three pinch hit appearances in close/late situations. 887161 i think carlos swinging the bat at 75% is better than having no carlos at all.. 887210 Yeah but having him at 75% could be worse if he reinjure because of not being at 100%. It could be different if Conine was playing bad or the club losing but neither is happening to bring Carlos back early.
