  1. Note: Joey Gathright went 0-4 today with 1 k And based on stats Reggie Abercrombie is beating Gtahright in every stat category except in the SB department where its 3/1 in favor Gtahright. Oh boo hoo. So Gathright is .269/.367/.348, 5/2 SB, 3/4 BB/K now. The sample size is so low, it doesn't even matter for either of them. The only point was, it was said he is playing lousy, which he isn't. Don't be so defensive. We know you hate Gathright and love all the SP, but I wouldn't be comparing 30 spring training AB for the two of them when Gathright has had a markedly better professional career then Abercrombie. Your right the point was Gathright is not having a lousy spring. Now I pointed out Abercrombie # to show how meaning less 30 spring training at bats are. I do agree agree Gathright will have a better career than Abercrombie, Reed, Aguila. You are also right I do prefer the SP (Nolasco, Johnson, Sanchez, Olsen, Petit, Hernandez and even a healthy Allison) over Gathright. If it takes any of the guys I mention then im against trading for Gathright.

The Florida Marlins have stepped up their interest in Tampa Bay Devil Rays center fielder Joey Gathright. The Rays are said to be willing to listen if the Marlins offer 22-year-old pitcher Scott Olsen. This deal might get done before Opening Day."
  4. Kerry and Herges have a better shot than Bowyer right now... Damn. We're really going to be in trouble when the game comes down to the later innings. Yeah, they're no Donnelly and Sheilds I wouldn't write off Nate Bump just yet. I'd much rather have him in our bullpen than Joe Blow Borowski, having seen him pitch the last two years. I guess you haven't seen Bump for the last two years then. Obviously you haven't. He was our best middle reliever last year and the second half of 2004. If he was our best middle reliver last year it just shows how bad our bullpen was. Bumps #'s http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=5559

  6. Looks like the Twins pulled a fast one on us with Bowyer. Traded him at the absolute peak of his value and it looks like the guy has absolutely no control to go with a fairly commanded, flat heater that great fastball hitters feast on. Definately the worse trade we made in the off season. Bowyer is 24 and still only has one pitch, and Tyler is 23-24 has no control either and has never pitched above high A ball. I personally always thought Castillo was better than Pierre yet it seems teams where more interested in Pierre than Castillo and the Pierre deal is probably the best one we made in the off season.
  7. floyd reaches...girardi takin bowyer out lol....if you base it on numbers from last season and the previous I would say yes....know if you look at it by what he has done in spring training I would say its Bump out there and not Bowyer. Bump 4.68 ERA, 1.53 W.H.IP and 4.86 k/9 major league averages tell me he sucks and Bowyer is better.
  8. Travis Bowyer reminds me of Braden Looper. With that said im not to high on him. I think this guy belongs in the minors. Poor control and still only has one pitch.
  9. what exactly is wrong with an average reliever that doesn't cost anything?...? I don't follow. below average reliever if you are talking about Bump. Nolasco, Johnson, Bowyer, Resop, Olsen, Petit, Pinto, Borowski, Herges, Sanchez, Messenger off the top of my head are all better than Bump. What exactly is the upside of having Bump on the roster? is he good for something? Firstly, only 4 of those guys are relievers. Secondly, quote the part where I said "good" and "Bump." Thirdly, give me some indication as to how Johnson, Bowyer, Nolasco, Resop, Petit, Pinto, Sanchez, and Messenger are better than Nathaniel Bump at this station in their careers. All of the guys I mentioned are more dominating, have better stuff, younger, and have put better numbers in the minors than Bump. I believe you said average and I said below average. Now you tell me if you think he is better than any of those guys and y? how can he help a big league team?

  11. Marlins2003's blind hate for Bump is reaching comical levels now. Nate flat out sucks. I don't Bump, Treanor, or Harris deserve spots on the 40 man roster. You can atleast make a argument for Harris but I don't think you can't for the other 2.
  12. Orioles scores...there's a surprise 6-2 Bump has given up two hits already this inning bump escapes the 8th with only one run and two hits...I guess you'd call that a good inning for Nathaniel MLB Gameday says that was Joe Borowski, not Bump. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=260310128 BALTIMORE (2) AT FLORIDA (7) BALTIMORE AB R H BI FLORIDA AB R H BI D Newhan cf 3 1 1 0 H Ramirez ss 4 0 0 0 J Fiorentino cf 2 0 0 0 D Uggla 2b 4 0 0 0 E Rogers 3b 3 0 2 0 J Willingham c 3 1 1 0 L Lopez 3b 1 1 1 0 T Wilson c 1 0 0 0 V Majewski rf 2 0 0 1 J Stokes 1b 4 1 2 2 K Reed rf 1 0 1 0 L Harris dh 2 1 1 0 J Conine dh 3 0 0 0 M Kinkade dh 2 2 2 1 F Tatis dh 1 0 0 0 W Helms 3b 3 1 1 0 N Markakis lf 2 0 1 1 S Seabol 3b 1 0 0 0 C Gomez ss 3 0 1 0 R Abercrombie cf 3 1 2 1 B Fahey ss 1 0 0 0 E Reed cf 1 0 0 0 L Daigle 1b 1 0 0 0 C Aguila lf 2 0 1 0 A Tracy 1b 2 0 0 0 J Miller lf 1 0 0 0 E Garabito 2b 2 0 0 0 M Little rf 2 0 0 0 D Relaford 2b 2 0 0 0 B Carroll rf 1 0 1 0 E Whiteside c 2 0 1 0 E Snead ph 1 0 0 0 B Bock c 1 0 1 0 TOTALS 33 2 9 2 TOTALS 34 7 11 4 BALTIMORE 001 000 010 -- 2 FLORIDA 041 001 01x -- 7 E--C Gomez 2, L Lopez, D Uggla 2. 13. Is Cabs really THAT untouchable?? I mean, if we were able to get 5 or 6 of the top Angels prospects in return, we could stock our team for years. MacPhearson, Wood, Kenrick, Jared Weaver, etc. I'm not saying that we should pull the trigger, but I don't think that any player should be viewed as "untouchable" when the reality is that we are not going to truly contend for a few years. I'm not a Cabs basher...I'm just saying.... If that kind of package were available around the time he's due for big money (not now), I think you've got to at least consider it. Nobody is untouchable, not even the great Cabs. The problem is that this kind of package is NEVER around when he's due big money. The minute we are forced to pay him big bucks, we have our backs against the wall. Then, it becomes a bidding war against the teams willing to take on a HUGE contract, rather than trying to get the best (most) value for him. If you're going to trade Cabs, it has to be done this year or next year, because after that - he's making 5 Million a year in arbitration (like Willis), and teams know we'll take less. Once again, I'm not saying trade him, but you have to pick your spots. Unless we got everything we want, I wouldn't trade him anyway. But to suggest that raping the Angels farm system would not be equal value doesn't pay respect to their top prospects, or give credence to the fact that their top prospects are seemingly at positions where the Fish are planning to start rule 5 pickups, etc. I agree and his value will likely not be as high as it is now by the time he is making the big bucks. IF we can get a Chone Figgans, Brandon Wood, Kendry Morales, and lets say a Nick Adenhart or Howie Kendrick you have to pull the trigger. Will be set and possibily also better sooner and long term. CF Chone Figgans 2b Howie Kendrick RF Jeremy Hermida 3b Brandon Wood C Josh Williangham LF Kendry Morales 1B Mike Jacobs or Jason Stokes SS Hanley Ramirez

I don't know.... if we can get Brandon Wood, Howie Kendrick, Kendry Morales, and Chone Figgans or package similar to that from the Angels I'll pull the trigger. I'll all do the same with the other L.A for Chad Billingsley, Russell Martin, Joel Guzman or Andy Laroche, and Greg Miller. High demands put I think it will be well worth it. if you wnat to have a good laugh read what this guy all pro writes in the cards board http://forums.espn.go.com/espn/thread?foru...PostID=20523172

  16. I'm sorry, but any time you put Jeff Allison ahead of Josh Willingham, you need to have your head examined. Well based on solely talent and potential I think Allison should be ranked only behind Hermida. I think this site or w/e(baseball deck) is banking on Jeff Allison staying out of problems from now on. Remember at 100% Allison had incredible contol, a hammer curve, and a fastball that registered as high 96-97 mph. This past season he was out of shape(caused arm problem and dip in velocity), basically skipped 2 levels and 2 years of development and still held his own in the sally league.

Roy Halladay. A ex Cy Young winner who also relies on a sinker like Mitre and someone who Mitre beat this past season. Of course not saying Mitre will be as good as Halladay but sometimes it takes alittle to put everything together.
  18. 2 years ago. Their names were Abraham Nunez and Ramon Castro. Nunez claimes to be born in 1977, but was really born in 1975 and only tore up the minors one season, at the actual age of 28. Castro on the other hand was not given a real shot with the organization, and then got injured and into trouble. Record of Marlins w/Castro in 2004: 30-20, w/o 53-59. Team ERA w/ Castro catching: 3.56 overall: 4.10. Now it could just be coincidence, but it was certainly like there were 2 2004 teams. Actually he was born in 1977. He claimed he was born in 1980 and that was when he was a big time prospect in the Arizona Farm Sytem. Around 2000-2001 I believe.
  19. Jerry Hairston is to expensive. He makes over 2 million I think.

  21. With top 10 picks you get guys like Carl Crawford, Carlos Quentin, Nick Markakis, Grady Seizmore, Lasting Milledge, Jeff Francouer, etc Of the guys you listed, only Markakis was taken in the top 10, and he hasn't even proven anything at the MLB level. Crawford was taken in the 2nd round (52 overall), Quentin 29th overall, Sizemore in the 3rd round (75th overall), Milledge 12th overall, and Francoeur 23rd overall. Outfielder "prospects" who have been taken in the top 10 since 1999 include Josh Hamilton, B.J. Garbe, and Chad Green. With Quentin, whom you listed, being taken 29th, remember that this organization once drafted Chip Ambres 27th. A little research before you speak never hurts. :thumbup Well my point exactly. All these guys where picked after or arond the top 10 picks therefore we will have more options when it comes to picking. I think much of that had to do with signability and the financial position of the drafting organization... Not really. All these guys where gonna sign and none to my knowledge are Boras clients.

  23. I've seen Mitre alot, on WGN...he's just solid crap. Worst acquisition we made this offseason. If anything the Pierre trade was the best we made all off season. The worse has to be the Castillo trade.
  24. I agree with that, to an extent. It depends on if he is uncontrollably awful at catcher and he brings his poor defensive showing to the plate. Sea Bass had a position, but if he made an error or felt he messed up, be would whiff at the plate nearly every time. I think Willingham is going to be a much smarter hitter then that, and he'll mash anywhere. I don't think defensive frustration holds him back. Likewise, I can also see situations where wear and tear of catchers hurts offensive ability. (I'm looking up Craig Wilson's splits right now). BRB The AB differance is staggering 627-68, so this comes with a big time SAMPLE SIZE WARNING, but Outfielder .273/.366/.490 Catcher .221/.312/.397 If you want to argue Willingham won't hit as much as a C versus LF, point to Wilson, and Inge who really did a lot better then last year. BUT, as someone pointed out. Willingham mashed 03-05 as a catcher in the minors. I don't think it's a huge concern. I'm not quite sure if playing catcher will affect you psychologically enough to hinder your ability at the plate. And even if it has shown it one way or another in the past, it's definitely something that would change from person to person. I don't think we could predict how Hammer would react to playing catcher offensively by looking at other's splits. My issue is mostly with where he offers the best defense. I have no problem with him getting every chance in the world to be the catcher (even though I think it's about as easy to learn catcher on the fly as it is to piss in the Fountain of Youth), however if he proves over the course of time that he cannot handle the position at a level that would be required not only to match his capabilities in LF but at one that is demanded from playing the most difficult and essential defensive position on the field, he should not be kept at catcher purely for the reasoning that his bat is among the best at that position. Well I do think our line-up will be better with Aguila and Reed in the OF than Olivo at Catcher, Williangham in LF and either Reed or Aguila in CF. Its not like Williangham projects to be a gold glover in the OF either. He just projects as average so if we can get him to at C defensively at around average or lets say liek Mike Piazza then I think he should stay there. Also McCan is a 1B/3B not a catcher, Davis sucks, Hayes is our best C prospects in the minor's. Our OF prospects are: Kris Harvey, J.T Restko, Jai Miller, Alejandro De Aza, Jamar Walton, Brett Carrol. The Marlisn are gonna teach Harvey to play 3B though. Well, that's really my point. If he's equal at the two positions then by all means let him catch. But I don't think he is, at least now. We'll see. Besides, catcher isn't a position where you want just anybody playing. It's not RF where you can just throw your big bat there and leave him to die. Yeah, I wasn't really thinking clearly on the names. Stupid Midterm. I was definitely thinking Hayes though. And I'm not sure I'd call any of those OF prospects top notch. I mean, Jai Miller? Nope not top notch but they all have lots of potential and the tools to play in the major's. (I forgot Greg Burns by the way). We can just as easily do what we did in this year in the draft and draft just hitters for the first couple of rounds. Also since we will likely have a bad record next season we will probably have a top 10 pick in the 2007 draft in every round. With top 10 picks you get guys like Carl Crawford, Carlos Quentin, Nick Markakis, Grady Seizmore, Lasting Milledge, Jeff Francouer, etc
