March 4, 200620 yr Good to know we're not completely resting here. I don't want to overpay but I'm glad our FO is at least looking around.
March 4, 200620 yr too bad Reggie Abercrombie is going to win the CF job I concur. Thor already getting respect.....he just got IBB! So what if it's to set up a possible double play.
March 4, 200620 yr too bad Reggie Abercrombie is going to win the CF job He's making a case for it so far this spring.
March 4, 200620 yr too bad Reggie Abercrombie is going to win the CF job God forbid. Reggie would be like .240/.275/.425 and plays the worst D out of the three candidates.

March 4, 200620 yr is it fun thinking everyone isnt going to be Jeremy Hermida? Yes. Because they aren't.

Though he's the fastest person on the team not named Reed, makes great reads on the ball from what I've been listening on the radio, and easily has the best arm of the candidates for the spot and maybe in the entire OF. He's so bad at defense, he can play all three positions. Cut him!

March 4, 200620 yr reggie abercrombie has the tools to be an outstanding player. i am rooting for him.

I think he could play league average, or slightly better, defense. Reed is going to be excellent defender, even if he never hits. Aguila is going to be the best offensive player and 2nd best defender of the three of them. Seems pretty simple to me who should play in CF if no one else is added. Reed should be the backup based on defense alone. Reggie should go to double AA and learn how hit.
March 4, 200620 yr reggie has tremenous upside, and i think the job is his to lose...that said...i think he does lose it and reed is out center fielder come opening day

Runner would have easily been at 3B with Pierre out there.

March 4, 200620 yr Would it be accurate to say that in a best-case scenario, Abercrombie could be a Preston Wilson type? Developing power, speed on the bases, not great strike zone management, speed in the outfield (but not great instincts) & average arm?
March 4, 200620 yr this was from gammons' insider blog from a few days ago The Devil Rays still are thinking about a Joey Gathright-for-Scott Olsen with Florida. ? At this point, no one knows who's going to be playing for the Marlins, except for Miguel Cabrera at third, Jeremy Hermida in right and Josh Willingham somewhere, either catcher or, more likely, left field (with Miguel Olivo behind the plate). "We don't just have good arms; we have great arms," says new manager Joe Girardi, whose energy and organization have wowed players who watched him do pole running drills with the pitchers. Expect Josh Johnson, Scott Olsen, Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco and Yusmeiro Petit to all get shots at the rotation this spring, as well as Travis Bowyer and Anibal Sanchez. Harvey Garcia, acquired with Sanchez, Jesus Delgado and shortstop Hanley Ramirez in the Beckett deal, has opened eyes. "He's got an incredible arm," says GM Admin Beinfest. Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Bump and Lenny Harris are the four Marlins with the longest service time, and Cabrera already has been questioned this spring about off-field problems than got him suspended for a game last September. Girardi and Beinfest are not worried, pointing to the fact that Cabrera is 22. "He's a good kid and the most talented player I've ever played with," says one ex-Marlin. "But he's got to watch it. There are no veterans there except for Lenny. There are no Latin coaches. He and Hermida won't have any protection, either."

Scott Olsen for Gathright :mad or Anibal Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Yusmerio Petit, and Jeff Allison for that matter.

Developing power, speed on the bases, not great strike zone management, speed in the outfield (but not great instincts) & average arm? Yes. Absolutely best case scenario. PECOTA pegs Abercrombie at a 90th percentile forecast (for 2006) of .270/.306/.480 player. Very similar to Preston's career .264/.333/.478 (even if some of that was in Colorado). Abercrombie's defense is a huge advantage over Preston also. I'll be shocked if Reggie can average that line in his MLB career though. Scott Olsen for Gathright :mad or Anibal Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Yusmerio Petit, and Jeff Allison for that matter. They could only be so lucky to get him for Allison. The Rays are going to want someone more progressed anyways. Just have to hope it's Johnson or Nolasco, and not one of the big 3, if it happens at all.
March 4, 200620 yr I was at the game today and Reggie looks the part. Having said that he does not have many AB's above single A and to think he is ready like Miguel was is a reach. If nothing else it would be nice to have an OF foursome of reggie, gathright, willy and hermedia. Reed is tiny and did not impress at first glance. I just don't think you can give up olsen, sanchez, petit or volstad for gathright. Stokes has some swing and is already making a serious push at a platoon with Jacobs. Delgado looked like he has great stuff.
March 4, 200620 yr LOL, one spring training HR and Abercrombie owns the CF spot. Personally, I think Aguila is gonna end up starting opening day.

While I now Jeff Allison hasn't proven anything as of right now I think the reward of a healthy and focus Allison is just to much for what projects to be average MLB palyer and nothing more. Im sure that Rays are gonna want more than Allison but a talent like Allison is just to much to give up for Gathright who essentially is their 5 or 6 best OF option.

An average player in CF is something we don't have in camp, nor is it something we have in the minors, developing. Allison is definitely a fair price to pay to add to the current core of our club. Allison is at least 2 years a way if he's ever ready. Joey is ready now to be an near average to average player at a position of extreme need. It's moot anyhow because I don't think the Rays would spring for it.

The way I see it is Allison ace potential while Gathright has average potential and since we are not gonna win many games I say we just wait it out and see. Also its not like Allison value is very high right now either so I say keep him.
