Scott O. vs. Joe G.
A boss should NEVER grab an employee. Joe Girardi was wrong and owes Olsen a public apology. That being said, Scott Olsen better grow up fast. Exactly. Anbother way to look at it is that Joey Pitbull is a teacher of sorts and Olsen is a pupil. Teachers grabbing students? What message is THAT to a kid watching? My wife is a teacher and tells me what Girardi did was wrong as well.

To compare this to Bobby Knight is quite a stretch. Excatly. Red Sox guy, you seem to have some beef with Joe Girardi other than this incident. I can sense something else, what gives ? Is it because he was a Yankee ? I don't dislike Willie Randolph. I just don't like control-freaks who focus on personal freedoms that have no effect on performance. Girardi is one.

A young kid seeing that on TV...he'll think it's OK for him to grab other kids' shirts... And Joey Pitbull claims his college education taught him how to work with people? Riiiiiiiight... Are you kidding me? Think of it another way, a kid sees Olsen not get reprimanded and he thinks that his talent alone allows him to act like a punk. Besides, how many kids grow up thinking "I want to be a manager when I grow up"? Compare that to the number of little leaguers hoping to become pitchers. Which action sends the wrong message to more people? I have absolutely no problem with what Girardi did. This is professional sports, not a freaking tea party. It's a physical game, and sometimes coaches may need to get a little physical to send a message to their players. End of story. Obviously, Olsen got the message. Had Girardi taken your advice, I'm sure Olsen would've ignored it just like he has probably ignored the same message from every coach he's had. I'm sure a civil approach is preferred, but sometimes it's just not effective. No offense to any ball players, but alot of professional baseball players are complete idiots outside of that batters box or pitcher's mound. Many players develop huge egos, especially touted pitching prospects. Pitchers can singlehandedly influence a game more than any player. If you're good, that can get you real cocky and lead you to think that you always know best. Fact of the matter is, they don't. For better or for worse, that's the coaches job, and it may take a shirt pull or two to wake some of these young kids up to that reality. As for "Joey Pitbull's" actions, Olsen isn't working in some cubicle, he's a baseball player. It comes with the job. Deal with it. BTW You mentioned Bobby Knight. And how he "wouldn't be where he's at if he wasn't Bobby Knight." Not defending what the guy did, but he probably wouldn't have been so succesful as a basketball coach either. (Soon to be winningest coach in college basketball history). He was an abusive, hard ass, but he was a successful, national championship trophy hoisting, abusive, hard ass. Alot of professional athletes are willing to take years off their lives by taking steroids to win games. Tell me one athlete who would not put up with Bobby Knight's crap for a season in exchange for a national championship? Admin Bird.

Little sore at ex-Yankees are ya SDL RedSoxFan??????? Are you the inventor of the highly inappropriate term, Joey Pitbull??? When I think of some of the managers the Red Sox have had, Dick Williams and Ralph Houk specifically, it's a bit funny to be lectured on appropriate managerial behavior by a Boston fan. Say what you will about Williams and Houk, but unlike Joey Pitbull, they weren't concerned if a player had a mustache. And if you remember, Williams quit managing the A's after what Finley did to Mike Andrews. Would Girardi have done that? Also, I don't recall either guy manhandling a player. By the way, both Williams and Houk won championships their first year managing in the bigs. And yes, I know that Houk had the great Yankee dynasty he inherited from Stengel. On the other hand, Williams inherited a 9th place squad from Billy Herman and the '67 team was given a 100-1 shot. Taking the Cards to 7 in the '67 Series wasn't too shabby. If that's manhandling then you and I have a very different definiton of that word. He grabbed his shirt. A young kid seeing that on TV...he'll think it's OK for him to grab other kids' shirts... And Joey Pitbull claims his college education taught him how to work with people? Riiiiiiiight...

Was was Joe supposed to say *in a sweet voice* "Oh Scotty. Come over here I need to talk to you about your attitude and how you are not focusing". It wasnt like he GRABBED him and threw him across the room. Joe just pulled him over to the side. There is nothing wrong with what he did. He is the boss. These guys need to respect him and listen to him. You make a lot of sense Holly Must be the "new" way of doing things. Look where it got Bobby Knight and Woody Hayes. If Bobby Knight wasn't Bobby Knight, he'd still be out of work. Leyland & McKeon didn't manhandle players and they did pretty well with the Marlins... To compare this to Bobby Knight is quite a stretch. Bottom Line: Don't touch a player.

It's inappropriate to touch your player and publicly embarrass him in that manner. I don't care who you are or what your message is. The good news is that when you become manager you will be able to set some type of "No touching players rule" Was was Joe supposed to say *in a sweet voice* "Oh Scotty. Come over here I need to talk to you about your attitude and how you are not focusing". It wasnt like he GRABBED him and threw him across the room. Joe just pulled him over to the side. There is nothing wrong with what he did. He is the boss. These guys need to respect him and listen to him. I don't respect anal-retentive control freaks like Joey Pitbull. Managers with that style usually don't last long. See Vern Rapp or Bobby Winkles as examples. Within the past 30 years, grabbing a player has become an invitation for disaster. Ask Bobby Knight. Anybody remember Woody Hayes' last act as Ohio State's football coach? Little sore at ex-Yankees are ya SDL RedSoxFan??????? Are you the inventor of the highly inappropriate term, Joey Pitbull??? Actually, there is one ex-Yankee I admire very highly, Jim Bouton. I'm more than a little sore at current Yankees... Leave us face it, Girardi does look like he could be onThe Sopranos as a hitman, hence the term "Joey Pitbull." He looks like a pit bull. As for inventing the term... http://tbsports.net/columns/levison/060306...alter_clone.htm

It's inappropriate to touch your player and publicly embarrass him in that manner. I don't care who you are or what your message is. Bravo! If the front office does nothing, what message does it send? That it's OK to grab a player? To treat him like he's a 4 year old kid? Look what happened to Bobby Knight at Indiana U in 2000. If Olsen brushed Joey Pitbull's hand away, would Girardi's defenders be screaming for Olsen's head? If Girardi grabbed me, I'd tell him he's got 3 seconds to move it or lose it and 2 of those seconds have elapsed. Talk to Olsen..fine..Grab and like I said before, the rules go out the window...

hahahha manhandling? Please. I'd hate to see what you think of a real fight where punches are thrown. I like the move from Joe. He has shown he isn't going to take any sh*t from the young guys on this team and if they aren't getting the message than he isn't afraid to yell/send em to Albequerque. Evidently Joey Pitbull has never heard of the Lenny Randle/Frank Lucchesi story from 1976 or '77. Great message...grab a player. Steinbrenner must be happy at that, as is Bobby Knight... And yeah, I have been in real fights...I've lost more than I won, but I didn't back down. If I was Olsen, the instant Girardi laid a hand on me...BOOM! Talk, yes. Criticize, yes. Touch...all rules go out the door. Leyland didn't take crap either, but he didn't grab. Lucchesi was really oldddddddddd! and Randle was a punk. Girardi could probably still be playing and could kick Olsen's arse nine ways to Sunday even if he couldn't he could get Messenger to do it for him. As for hitting your boss well there only so many MLB teams so if Olsen wants to play in Mexico or Japan as long as the Mgr doesn't molest you he should shut the F up and listen even if it was an aggressive talking to. You don't know that whole story. After Lucchesi backstabbed Billy Martin in Texas, he then went after Randle who was one of Martin's favorite players. Lucchesi kept calling Randle a "punk." Where Randle is from, it's a term for a gay person. Randle kept telling Lucchesi to cut the crap, but Lucchesi kept on doing it for months until Randle had enough and swung at him. Lucchesi wasn't old...was about 49 when Randle punched him. If Joey Pitbull was playing and he did that to Olsen, his teammates would have pounded him. As for Olsen, we'd gladly take him in Boston...

yeah I'm sure Girardi won't talk about it. He likes to keep things in-house. Sorry, but once it's seen by the public it's no longer "in-house." Who the hell does Girardi think he is...Bobby Knight???? If he's not suspended for manhandling Olsen, it's a bad example. And Girardi does a segment for kids on FSN?? Great thing for a kid to see on the news. Only two people could disclipine me...my parents. If I was Olsen and Girardi laid a hand on me, as Pat Travers would say, "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights." You talk...not touch. Shame that Joey Pitbull doesn't realize that...

More Trade Rumors
Talk is strong about Willis coming over to Fenway. I just hope it's talk. Hey, I love the guy, but if the rumors are true about the asking price, I do NOTwant to see it happen! Let's just say that if you enjoy seeing Hanley Ramirez, you'll think you have a winning Lotto ticket with what's been rumored on the soxprospects.com board...

Loria denies Trade rumors
We'll gladly take Willis...but if you think you're going to get Jon Lester or David Murphy from us...WRONG!!!!!

Texas busting drunks ... in bars
coming next: no swearing in public places. That was part of the "good old days." Famous 1st amendment case, name slips my mind, where guy was arrested for saying f*** the draft outdoors. Luckily that stuff is protected now. The case was Cohen v California. Sad to say, there are those who thing that under the reign of Georgie the Powdernosed Chickenhawk, that it should be rescinded. http://stpeteforpeace.org/palmharbor.html If Jack Thompson had his way, swearing in public would get you the death penalty...

IED's- The Threat That Could Have Been Prevented
Yeah, I go into chat rooms to gauge what the "other side" says. I have to laugh when they say "God Is On Our Side." Ask them where their God was on 9/11. His Appointed Servant (as some call The Chimp) was busy reading "My Pet Goat." Oh, and the evidence that The Three Stooges were planning to invade anyway? I usually get told that it's all Michael Moore/Clinton/Al Franken propaganda...inly Fox News and The Drudge Report is correct...

IED's- The Threat That Could Have Been Prevented
What is laughable (or sad) is that the pro-war people seem to swallow what BS comes from the White House or from the talking heads like The Racist Pillhead In Palm Beach, Sean Insannity, Savage the rabid lunatic or O'Lielly. Facts? You know what Reagan once said "Facts Are Stupid Things." I go to a weekly anti-war "cornering" where "pro-war" people try to "counter" and I also go into chat rooms. The ignorance about everything is astounding. They believe of course that Saddam and Osama were together on 9/11, that Saddam wanted to kill Bush Sr, etc. And of course, we are told that we should be arrested for being traitors, that in a time of war we must support OUR President, blah blah blah..that it's a war on terror. Why? because Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage/Beck/O'Reilly/Schnitt say so... Do these idiots REALIZE that Osama HATED Saddam for being SECULAR? That Osama's supporters would have been SHOT by Saddam? The only reason this crap is happening is because Al-Qaeda saw an opening when the US invaded and threw everything in chaos. Even more sad is what I've heard from the Religious Right. They forget that Saddam had no problem with Christians. His PM, Tariq Aziz was Christian. Women had rights. The new government is going to bring back the burkas....heck, we've just created another Iran. I'm certainly no fan of Saddam. But he wasn't THAT stupid to have tried to have been tied in with 9/11. That saying is true. "Iraq is Arabic For Vietnam."

Floridians not Scared by San Antonio Marlins Proposal
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Leave us face it..after the tantrums Huizenga threw and the emotional blackmail/con job he did with the Panthers' arena (BTW..what is the name of it this week?), politicians are leery. Joe Robbie was able to finance JRS (sorry, I refuse to refer to whatever Sieg Huizenga has renamed it). You telling me Loria can't do that? Has UM baseball started to outdraw the Marlins again?

Interesting column
Would be interesting to see how long Girardi would last if Charlie Finley owned the Marlins. If they have a reunion of the '97 team, will they have to shave as well?
-
Interesting column
Lame column. Reads like a website post, and I second Ramp's YAAAWN. Girardi's got a no facial hair policy? :o Scandalous! Joe Maddon (new Rays coach), is a complete 180 degree opposite from Joey Pitbull. Maddon is a guy who is more concerned what happens on the field than what is growing on a person's face. Just watching him at the Naimoli Complex, you see a guy who knows baseball but also knows how to keep things loose. Something tells me that over in Jupiter, the opposite is true. Is it a coincidence that after Girardi was named manager that Josh Beckett (beard) and Mike Lowell (goatee) were traded? I was going to respond to the writer but after reading that I should shut my mouth. This guy's a friggin' genius. :lol :jackass Go ahead and respond..I doubt Joey Pitbull will..heck..he DOES look like a pit bull. You know somebody will challenge him. Al Hrabosky & Vern Rapp all over again. Will the press have ti be clean shaven as well?
-
Interesting column
Just jealous because Joe G. chose Marlins over Rays. People seem to forget that before the 2004 season, it was a toss-up between Maddon and Terry Francona for the Sox job. And I know that Maddon could have gotten the same results with my boys. I'm not a Rays fan, but I'd feel Ok having a beer with Maddon. Now Joey Pitbull..he'd probably have me whacked. But from I've seen, Maddon is making camp fun. Would Girardi be wearing a Venezuelan cap for Cabrera or a Team USA cap/shirt for Willis? Heck no. It's Vern Rapp and the 1977 Cardinals all over again.

I can smell that Ballpark Ballot Issue coming in Sept.
If I'm not mistaken, the fan base is primarily in Broward & PB Counties. Aren't there any possible locations in W. Broward? The car-rental tax in those areas would work just as well.
