  1. Can someone please explain to me why it matters so much how tall the point guard is? I mean if he can outscore his opposition and make some good passes, who really gives a s*** how tall he is? It's not like the point guards are crashing the boards that often. Or, is it assumed that just because he's 2-4 inches shorter, there's no way he can outscore his opposition? I've never found 2-4 inches to matter on the court but maybe it's different in the NBA (though I would think it would matter less). Why do we care how tall Nelson is? Defensive liability. Plus it will also depend on his quickness and speed. Nelson has good quickness and speed but in the NBA he might not be able to get to the hoop like he did in college, only time will tell. But the height definitely hurts him on the defensive end and he can and will be posted up, however, luckily for him, his body and strength will offset that alot more than most people his height.
  2. Giving up Olivo is what bothers me. He is going to be a multiple all star catcher with a great arm, great speed, and very good power. Losing him is something that bothers me, but again you must give up something to get something. He is already 25 and really proven nothing. I wouldn't lose sleep over losing Olivo. He is nothing special. His main attribute was his speed for a catcher and SB he can get from that position but so far in the majors he has not done that. He is good but not great. But yes he also does have a cannon for an arm.

    Leadoff Man

I listed a lot of options here to give everyone a view of who there is. I would choose Carl Crawford. At 23 years old, he is already an advanced hitter for his age and has been in the majors for almost three years. He has plenty of speed to burn and at 6'2'', 220lbs will develop more power too.
  4. well I'm damn glad the Magic got Nelson. I'm very pleased with our (Magic) offseason, and although I'd like to see the Magic look for a better offer than what the Rockets are asking, I'll be alright with the trade. A team consisting of Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Drew Gooden, Stevey Franchise, Cato, Mobley, and Grant Hill (I have a strong feeling he's gonna be healthy this season)....it's better than 21 wins...that's for sure. Maybe in the future, but everyone of those players have question marks to fill. Howard & Nelson are rookies, Gooden is coming off of a pretty disappointing soph season, Hill off numerous surgeries and injury riddle years. Cato is nothing special as a player, Francis is great but kind of overrated and Mobley is just an average, undersized 2 guard.
  5. i still wouldnt exactly call wade a point guard. the magic got a steal in nelson and he will make teams regret passing on him. high school players after 15 have largely failed and miserably. do the research. I don't agree with you and I do not believe statistics have proven that HS players taken after 15, especially in round one alone, have failed miserably. 1996: Jermaine O'Neal #17 to Portland 1998: Al Harrington #25 to Indiana, Rashard Lewis #32 to Seattle, Korleone Young #40 to Detroit 1999: Leon Smith #29 to Dallas 2000: DeShawn Stevenson #23 to Utah 2001: Osumane Cisse #47 to Denver 2003: Travis Outlaw #23 to Portland, Ndudi Ebi #26 to Minnesota, Kendrick Perkins #27 to Boston Now of the players taken in round one from HS past 15, O'Neal is great, Harrington is a very good player who is young, Smith never had a chance and went nuts and has talent, Stevenson has not lived up to expectations but has shown glimpses, especially at the end of last year and just turned 23 years old. Outlaw, Ebi and Perkins are all too young to judge and can still become very good players. Also, typically, when you draft that late in the first round, many players do not succeed anyway. For players drafted after round one, you really are never supposed to expect anything special. Rashard Lewis has been very good and is still very young. Young and Cisse were busts but you can not ever really expect great things out of a second round pick, so to call a second round pick a bust or to say they failed miserably is kind of crazy. This year there were eight HS players taken within the first 19 picks. While all might not succeed, there is not a terrible track record of HS kids they are following. To be taken at #19 like Dorell Wright was in this draft does not say anything bad, and I have faith he will pan out in a few years after he develops. So now that I have done the research, Das, I do not agree with your assessment and comments.

Nice to see a fellow Hawkeye here now! I'm 60% Badger, 40% Hawkeye. I know l live in Sconsin, but my Dad's from Iowa, and as is stated in the Iowa Constitution "your not a real Iowan till you like the Hawks" Just like the Wisconsin const. states "your not a real Wisconsinite till you like the Pack" At any rate, I see Russell making it as the 3rd back for Miami. Good solid runner, fundamentals were sound and solid, I'd be surprised if he doesn't make the team, put it that way. I wouldn't. The only way Leonard Henry doesn't beat him out is if his current injury keeps him out long.
  7. cassell, robinson, allen i would hardly call those bucks teams of the late 90s crap. Robinson has no heart or defense. He was just a scorer. He really showed his worth as nothing these past few years. Cassell is good, but nothing special. No depth on those Milwaukee teams or size. Lets be realistic, they never had a chance to do much as a team, that team was nothing special. but they sure as hell werent crap. especially in the east. They had no chance in hell and for you to claim that Ray Allen is overrated because he "cant lead a team anywhere" is a bunch of BS. He has never had a team capable of really making an impact and don't tell me those Buck teams with no depth or bigs could have.
  8. For Bulls Fans: Its possible that the Bulls will deal the #3 pick for the #5 and Jarvis Hayes. In that deal, The Wizards would take Deng with the 3rd pick and the Bulls would take Andre Iguodala at #5 Other talks Say theres a possible trade of Paul Pierce from the Celtics to the Bulls for the #3 and Chandler, though they'd have to work the salarys.. Also the updated Mock Draft has the Miami Heat taking Jameer Nelson at #19. I would be salivating at a deal that would bring Pierce here to compliment Heinrich in the back court. I think Deng will end up being the best player in the draft so it would be hard as a fan to see them pass him up. Chad Ford has said there is no legit basis to this and no real chance of completion because in order for it to happen, the Celtics would have to take back the salaries of players such as Eddie Robinson/Antonio Davis because Chandler for Pierce does not work salary wise and isn't even close. He said the Celtics would not want to take on the dead weight of those salaries. Sorry.

  10. Last time I checked career averages of 20.2 points, 4.7 REB, 4 AST, and 1.3 STL was not overrated. stats are just that. ray allen couldnt lead a team to anything. and he is still a whiner. :whistle Ray Allen is not overrated. He has never had a chance. Those Milwaukee teams were crap and Seattle, please. He is an awesome player and if anything, underrated a bit.
  11. I know they did well cap wise and most of these people will not be on their team, however, I feel they could have done alot better and gotten alot more young talent with potential. If I were the Bobcats, my team after the draft would look like this (without trades as well): 1. Marcus Fizer 2. Gerald Wallace 3. James Jones 4. Keyon Dooling 5. Loren Woods 6. Tamar Slay 7. Jamaal Sampson 8. Deshawn Stevenson 9. Qyentel Woods 10. Aleksander Pavloic 11. Juan Dixon 12. Jason Kapono 13. Theron Smith 14. Brian Skinner A bunch of young guys, a lot of guards. This way either Howard or Okafor can combine with these guys. Some are unrestricted and wont sign but the overall a lot of young, keeper talent.

Thank you. In fact my only problem is with labeling. And as for Sals comment. Who are YOU to say whats wrong and whats right. You're no one to make that kind of judgement and neither am I, and calling these people ignorant or saying that their beliefs are such seems to me like youy may be guilty of what you are accusing them of doing. I am the holy ghost. praise be yours almighty Thank you. You may also call me the father or the son. Or the holy spirit. Or just God or Jesus. I'm flexible like that.

People then thought that being homosexual was pure evil, should we go by their standard or ours? Lets go by ours just because we know much more than they do b/c we're progrssive and modern. People still think that and they are wrong. So let's use our thinking hats and go by the RIGHT standards and not the ignorant ones.
  15. I think it says something about the coaching style and them having McGrady take it up the court and take it himself. Please! Of the players who played at least 20 games last year for the Magic, 17 got more than the 9.6 MPG that Gaines got. That includes Britton Johnson and Keith Bogans, 2 rookies selected lower than Gaines. Don't you think if Gaines played semi-decent the Magic would have given him a shot and that they would have wanted their first round pick to play above the lower draft picks if he could show any tiny bit of ability to contribute at all and not be dead weight. A 6'6'' PG would have been great to play with McGrady and the coaches would have loved to play him if he showed he had the ability to play. He shot freakin' 29% from the field last year, thats god awful. There is no excuse to shoot 29% and 64% from the FT line as a PG. Also, you don't find it strange that if would have shown any ability to play the Magic would not have put him on the unprotected list on the expansion draft? According to Insider, the Bobcats haven't even considered his name, it hasn't been mentioned. Thats pathetic and shows something about his game. P.S. the Magic had 2 different coaches last year and neither saw anything from himt o even give him some PT. That speaks volumes, especially on the worst team in the NBA with Tyrone Lue at PG and they also had to even bring in a washed up Rod Strickland over him. Pathetic. :banghead

The problem is calling someone a 'racist' is objective and cannot be backed up with facts. What do you define as racist? Is Jesse Jackson racist? My argument is not that Lincoln had negative feelings towards blacks, i do not dispute that, but the labeling of the word racist is what im debating. And again you cannot judge people of the past by todays standards. Period. From dictionary.com: racist adj 1: based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks" 2: discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion [syn: antiblack, anti-Semitic, anti-Semite(a)] n : a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others [syn: racialist] Thats what I go by as the definition of a racist. Abraham Lincoln fits that description to a tee. And yes, I can call him a racist and judge people of the past by todays standards. Many people knew that racism was wrong back during Lincoln's time and previous to that as well. It might not have been the majority, but there were definitely people who knew of racism. Lincoln knew of it and thought himself and the white race to be better, he was truly a racist.
  17. ed obannen was amazingly good in college. chris carrawell was silly good also. and the list goes on of guys that have not turned college success into NBA success. but its too early to tell with gaines. they do have no clue when it comes to the draft though. I just want to say, and this is just my opinion, but the Magic did not have any tremendous PG on their roster last year and they did get the first pick and had the worst record, showing that they were not any powerhouse. Doesn't it say something about Rece Gaines if he could not even get any PT on a team like that and they are already ready to give up on him? I don't think it says much about him as an NBA player.

you have to remember this. the hatred furman has for lincoln = the hatred sorianofan has for FDR. no matter what these Presidents will always suck in their minds. He may have hatred for Lincoln but I don't. I can objectively say that the facts speak for themself and that Lincoln was not the great man people say he was. Furman has backed up his opinion with a tremendous amount of facts. Lincoln was a racist and not the great man everyone thought. Facts do not lie.

the great Emancipator my ass. He was the PRESIDENT OF THE ILLINOIS COLONIZATION SOCIETY! (i.e. the society that pushed to send all blacks to Liberia, Haiti, etc....as long as they weren't with the "superior race in the States"). The Emancipator who could have saved a war, or at least saved lives if he had not supported the Fugitive Slave Act....this act among others (as tonyi mentioned) was leading to the decline in slavery. Border states had already seen a major drop in slavery by 1860, and was spreading southward. The Emancipator who felt war was necessary to forcefully keep states in a union that they had VOLUNTARILY became a part of. This Emancipator, who's own bastard of a Sec. of War (Seward) mocked his great Emancipation Proclamation, saying how he conveniently made it so slavery was legal in certain parts (the Union pretty much had control of Louisiana, northern VA, West Virginia, Maryland, parts of Tennessee, and Kentucky), and in the other parts, it was impossible to enforce. read a previous post of mine, and buy the book, "The Real Lincoln" by Thomas DiLorenzo (you won't read it Phlub...it would prove you wrong). The myth of Abraham Lincoln is much like the myth of Christopher Columbus...made out to be some great hero, when in actuality...he wasnt. Wow, this is exactly what I was going to post. I learned this over the last few years and was surprised at first. It is very true though, it was all a "mistake" that Lincoln got credit for and he was for sending the slaves to other countries, not to free them here! Well put Furman.

    "war" quotes

We, as a country, are too overly concerned with saying the politically correct thing and are sometimes too sensitive on comments with regards to race and other items. It has gotten to a ridiculous point that no matter what someone says, it is taken out of context and manipulated into a poor context making the person look bad. It's truly ridiculous.

well obviously your logic was flawed somewhere. not really shocking. I'm sorry, the baseball execuitives have never been wrong. Brien Taylor, Matt Harrington were phenominal first round picks. Marcus Giles, Mike Piazza, and several others were not oversights! They have never been wrong just like you have never been wrong I can name several left field predicitons you have made that have never come true but the few, and i stress few, that do you praise yourself to high heaven. Sorry if the baseball execuitives do not agree with me on this one but we will see down the road who is a better ball player, Dexter Fowler or Jared Gaston. mike piazza was never projected as a first round draft pick though. You are going to tell me that a player that has been projected as a first round pick in baseball and slipped has not come back and proven that the teams that passed on him were wrong. It has happened in every sport and will in the future. Be real and also be a human, not an ass. :jackass

undoubtably there is something wrong with the other 28....well really 29 teams also. Doesn't matter who passes on him, I'd rather take the chance on a player who could be special and let other teams be jealous down the road. Many players throughout history have slipped for reasons and when finally selected, show that it was a mistake that other teams passed on them. At this point he should probably head to UM and go from there. I read that his swing needs to be broken down and he may stay at low levels for a while, but he also has plus power and supposedly glides to balls reminiscent of Andruw Jones in the OF.
  25. What is wrong with the Marlins? How we let this 5-tool talent slip all the way to the Rockies at #410 is beyond me. I know he slipped a long way but this was a guy we supposedly had interest in for round one, yet we draft players like Steve Gendron and Jared Gaston ahead of him. Beyond belief, I am speechless.
