Best Book You've Read

Featured Replies

I would have to say my favorite is Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood." For those of you who don't know, it's about two young men who end up robbing and killing this family and the police's efforts to find and convict them. Eventually they get found and punishment is meted out...

But, I can honestly say nothing moved me more than the last chapter. The whole book I felt absolutely NO REMORSE for the killers whatsoever. I was wanting them to get their comeuppance. Finally, by the end of the book they get sentenced to death and punished for their crimes. In the last chapter the main investigator of the crime reflects on whether or not it was worth it, and whether the electric chair fit the crime. It took about three pages for me to change my opinion and by the last page I remember even crying and feeling bad afterwards. A great book.

Also, interesting to note, I find I get more out of books because, since I'm the one reading and imagining, I find I put more effort into them and thus get more out...

I just wish I had more time to read what I wanted and not the stuff forced on me.

"I may be wrong but I doubt it" - Charles Barkley

- Nearly not as deep as yours but it's a great book. He talks about everything from sports to politics. He voices a lot of his opinion (like always) and he makes a lot of good points. It's also pretty interesting because he talks about personal experiences in his sports career and it kinda shows you that being an athlete isn't all peachy keen as it's made out to be sometimes.

Another great book is "Night" by Elie Weisel

- I had to read it for school, it's about the Holocaust and it's so detailed that the whole time you read it, you can just imagine it in your head. It's really sad and pretty disturbing but it really shows you what went on.

But I'm just starting a book called "Forged by fire" that I heard was good so I'll see how that goes.

Oh, and I I didn't give anything away as to the ending of the case. It's based on a documented case and all the stuff I mentioned you know from the beginning is going to happen.

It's the getting there that's the meat and potatoes of the story...

I read "In Cold Blood" for English class. Good book.

And, as a wrestling fan, I may be a bit biased, but the best book I've read is "Mick Foley: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks." Best autobiography written by a wrestler and a must-read for all wrestling fans.

(not counting Bible)

1) "A Land Remembered" by Patrick Smith

2) "Southern By The Grace of God" by Michael Andrew Grissom

3) To Kill a Mockingbird

holy s***..."A Land Remembered" and "To Kill a Mockingbird are in my top 5. Awesome. If anyone wants an incredible historical fiction on the development of Florida read "A Land Remembered."

I want to make it into a movie someday.

Catch-22 is probably the best book I've ever read because the author, Joe Heller, shows through hilarious and demented characters how f***ed up and silly war is.

Moneyball, Native Son, A Coach's Life(Dean Smith's autobiography)

Another very good pick...I read native son last semester.

YES! Shamrock! You are the 1st person on this board that has read that book! Everyone thinks its just some pro-Southern book because of what I talk about. But, every Floridian should read the book...it is amazing, and provides a great history of your state.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman, The man is a genius

Good book. I was kind of disappointed by the resolution to the story, though... It was such a good set-up and the final battle, if you will, just didn't do it for me...

"Night" & "To Kill a Mockingbird" are very good books! One of my favorites is "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.

its kind of easy reading, but The Yearling is a great book.

Rawlings is from Alachua County I believe (where Gainesville and UF are located)

1984, We, F 451

personally I can't get into the bible. it's too long, makes so sense, and contraditcs itself every couple of paragraphs. I don't see how in actuality how it's anyone's favorite book. I know it was my grandfather's favorite, he supposedly read this huge as bible all the time. It has gold on it and everything. You have to find something mighty interesting to read it so. So do people read it for the holiness factor or for entertainment, or both? I'm just wondering.

Rawlings is from Alachua County I believe (where Gainesville and UF are located) yah, I think I knew that. And I definitely know where Alachua County is! Woo! Go Gators!

Ok, sorry.

Anyway, doesn't the Yearling take place somewhere just south of Jacksonville? I forget, since I haven't read that since 10th grade.

Patrick Smith and Rawlings...2 great Floridians...2 great authors

Actually, I was going to pick one up, but I have to talk to my old philosophy of religion teacher; he really got ticked off when people quoted from the King James and called it the fake bible, said there's a couple of lines that are just made up and not in any other translation...

I'm looking for the most scholarly, which he named, but if it's too steep I won't get it since I'm only reading it for my own enjoyment.

Sister Carrie, the Corrections, umm...... I go through books like water, so these are the only ones that really stand out. I second Catch-22. Sinclair Lewis - Main Street, Dodsworth...um.....s'all for now.
