Marlins/Phillies preview ( http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/preview?gid=240409128 )

The Florida Marlins edged the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League wild card last season.

The defending World Series champions will now try to get off to a good start against their NL East rivals when they meet in the opener of a three-game series.

The Marlins had a one-game lead over Philadelphia in the wild-card race heading into a three-game series at Pro Player Stadium last Sept. 23-25. Florida then swept the series, won the wild card and went on to win the second World Series championship in team history.

The Marlins opened the defense of their title by taking two of three from the Montreal Expos.

Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Dontrelle Willis pitched five-hit ball into the eighth inning, went 3-for-3 and scored a run Thursday in the Marlins' 3-0 victory. ``If we had lost, it wouldn't have meant anything,'' Willis said. ``I'm just trying to get a 'W.' It's not really complex. I just want to win. I just want to get back to October. Everybody's hungry to get to back in the situation we were last year.''

The Phillies, who are also hungry to get in that situation, spent the offseason upgrading their pitching staff, acquiring starter Eric Milton and relievers Roberto Hernandez, Billy Wagner and Tim Worrell.

However, it was the Phillies' offense that let them down in their season-opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Philadelphia dropped two of three and scored a total of just three runs in the two losses.

``You're not going to win a lot of games scoring one or two runs, no matter who you play,'' Phillies manager Admin Bowa said. ``All of their starters were very impressive, but we're just not scoring runs.''

Catcher Mike Lieberthal hit the Phillies' first home run of the season on Thursday, a solo shot in a 6-2 loss.

Bowa suggested the Phillies are ``a little anxious'' and are pressing offensively, but leadoff hitter Marlon Byrd doesn't necessarily see it that way.

``It's three games,'' Byrd said. ``It's early in the season, it's cold weather, we're still getting adjusted. And when their guys are throwing 94-95 mph and hitting their spots, it's tough.''
