April 19, 200422 yr Dood, only like 5 people on this entire board even know what OPS+ means. Not to mention they believe in clutch hitting as an ability. Come on Sham, you know better. Just because someone doesn't like a certain stat does not mean that person doesn't know what that stat means or what it is supposed to measure. In fact, I think in not liking the stat, it shows that they know exactly what it is and what it does.
April 19, 200422 yr Castro + Redmond OPS= 765 765 is better than Andruw Jones, Hideki Matsui, Austin Kearns, Bernie Williams, and more. And only 25 points lower than Gary Sheffield and Vernon Wells. They are 13th in OPS for catchers. This is facing the 2nd(Expos), 6th(Phillies), and 14th(Braves) best pitching teams.

Yes. :plain Like Jack Mckeon says: "Stats I don't even pay attention to. I don't even know half of what these things are." J/K.
April 19, 200422 yr Also 7 rbis which is 9th among catchers. and 370 obp which is 10th among catchers.
April 19, 200422 yr This lineup is not that bad. I remmeber last year the marlins made some terrible pitchers look like Cy Young. This is a very streaky team when it comes to hitting. They need to have that one big inning to get them goin. Noone is hitting right now. 8-4 is a pretty damn good record for not hitting very well. It will come around. No worries yet.
April 19, 200422 yr Of course this is not a bad lineup...its just average. Its not like I'm making some crazy statement or anything...we knew our starters were going to carry us.
April 19, 200422 yr Of course this is not a bad lineup...its just average. Its not like I'm making some crazy statement or anything...we knew our starters were going to carry us. Your absolutely right. If the FIsh make the playoffs is because of starting pitching carry the team.
April 19, 200422 yr 1. Last year versus this year. Haven't we been through this already? The team we had for the stretch run and world series was not the same team we had in May, June or July. The team we had in the playoffs would have cost more than what Loria could afford because of the lease and meager fan support. When we look at the Marlins and the moves the front office make we must look at it from an financial and public relations angle as well. Also it seems we seem to only want to think about the good things about last year. Pudge hit very well with RISP, but also killed a lot of our rallies by hitting into double plays. Encarnacion was providing only below-average offense from a slugger's position. Urbina was only with us for three months. 2. Jeff Conine. I don't know why you guys are down on the guy. He's been very nice to the organization and the community when he could just as easily done an Albert Belle or Kevin Brown. Do you know that upon being acquired last year he agreed to restructure his contract to help the club keep Luiy and others? Still while he's in a slump (and there's no denying that) he's playing better defense than Pierre or Cabrera. He's working the count and tiring pitchers out for the rest of the lineup. 3. Abraham Nunez. Upon it being uncovered that he was three years older than previously advertised he's been hitting the heck out of the ball. It's not a fluke, but the most of success has come against minor leaguers and major leaguers practicing. We don't know how well he'll do against starting pitcher, but let's get this straight he's a non-prospect from AAA on the defending World Champs. He has not earned anything. I wish McKeon would give him a shot, but not on Opening Day. Not in place of our best defensive outfielder. Not in place of our future Hall of Famer Miggy. Not in place of also red-hot Choi. I guess that leaves Lowell or Pierre and well your not going to find much support to bench either of them. So where does Nunez start? He doesn't. He is blocked at every position. He just needs to wait and stop trying to hack his way into the lineup, because the guys above him are pretty good and have proven themselves against in MLB. 4. And finally the lineup. We need Pierre to hit. Simple as that. This is a lineup that can win games when key players are hitting. Pierre is one of those key players. And as long as he's struggling Castillo is not nearly the threat he can be and Miggy's home runs only score one run. Maybe we could try moving Lowell (or Conine, when he starts hitting) up behind the first two, although that means Cabrera won't see a hittable pitch.
April 19, 200422 yr Our lineup isn't any worse than last years was at any point in the regular season. Encarnacion was craptacular, he was almost as bad as Gonzalez, cept that the was a RF and was dirt poor by position, where AGon was merely average to the position. LF + RF is better 1B looks better, but too early to know for sure 2B, 3B, SS & CF are the same C is worse, but too early to know for sure There are several slumps, in a pitcher's park, on the road, with 2 close games. Take valium!
