May 2, 200420 yr why take Wayne out of a place he is comfortable with? he clearly looked out of place last year..... leave him where he is and let him be our 8th inning man Why make Eric Gagne a closer?? He was comfortable as a starter. Why make Dennis Eckersley a closer?? He was comfortable as a starter. Why make Derek Lowe a starter?? He was comfortable in the bullpen. Wayne was out of place last year because he looked intimidated. He now has experience and knows how to get big league hitters out. He can't do worse than Oliver has in terms of ERA IMO and he has much more upside because he's a lot younger. ok first of all, I dont think DO should be our 5th starter but Wayne has been dynomite in the pen so I dont want to move him Derek Lowe started struggling in the closer role and blew 6 saves his last year before turning into a starter.... he was not comfortable there anymore.... you could see it and the fans were makin his life hell yea Gagne was real comfortable as a starter.... that 5.15 and 4.75 era in back to back years say Cy Young all over it
May 2, 200420 yr Author However, I don't care about the comfortable thing anyway. I just think Wayne is more valuable as our setup guy than as our #5 right now. Finally, a legitmate point. Ok, i'll respectfully disagree with that. I think having 5 starters who can pitch well is more valuable than having 1 extra good guy like Wayne in the pen. Look, the pen is going to struggle if Wayne is there or not, but the #5 starter could be good if Oliver is 86ed from it. Oh, and Hutchinson should be in your bullpen. Another FACT.
May 2, 200420 yr Oh, and Hutchinson should be in your bullpen. Another FACT. how the hell is that fact? just because Cotts struggled?
May 2, 200420 yr Author Oh, and Hutchinson should be in your bullpen. Another FACT. how the hell is that fact? just because Cotts struggled? No, because he has a good young arm, and those are normally a good thing to put into a struggling pen.
May 2, 200420 yr Ok, i'll respectfully disagree with that. I think having 5 starters who can pitch well is more valuable than having 1 extra good guy like Wayne in the pen. Yeah, maybe if Wayne was an extra good guy. But, he's our #1 setup option now. And it's becoming pretty clear that good starting pitching means nothing if you have a crap pen. Ask C.C. Sabathia.
May 2, 200420 yr Author Yeah, maybe if Wayne was an extra good guy. But, he's our #1 setup option now. And it's becoming pretty clear that good starting pitching means nothing if you have a crap pen. Ask C.C. Sabathia. If the Marlins had the Indians bullpen, this argument would not be happening and I'd agree with you.
May 2, 200420 yr I just dont see the reasoning behind moving your #1 setup guy to a role where you see him every 5 days I want him there in the 8th inning 4 out of 7 nights a week
May 2, 200420 yr If the Marlins had the Indians bullpen, this argument would not be happening and I'd agree with you. All I can tell you is with Fox out, Wayne is the ONLY guy out there I feel comfortable giving the ball to in the 8th inning, up by 1 or 2. Who becomes the setup guy? Nate Bump? No. Matt Perisho? Lefties only please. Franklyn Gracesqui? Not yet. Tommy Phelps? No.
May 2, 200420 yr Author Meh, i'm done arguing, i've made all my points, if you want to disagree, that's fine. All I can say is Darren Oliver is not the answer at the #5 spot in the rotation, and I don't see it worth it to leave him there and give up half a dozen runs plus every 5 games. I'm going to bed, 7 hours of watching baseball in cold rain makes you tired.
May 2, 200420 yr walking away from the battle.... :lol anyway I agree with you about DO, but not about his replacement
May 2, 200420 yr i say trade darren oliver for pedro martinez!!! now!!! lol hahaha jokes. but i think we can give oliver a few more starts before we take him out of the rotation.
May 2, 200420 yr umm..... perisho has done a pretty good job in the pen also doods. Oh I don't know...Perisho let all three runs score Friday night when he was brought in to get Bump out of a jam. That gave SF the lead. (Of course the Marlins never scored anymore runs!) Bump was clearly tired and should have been taken out after the first hit he gave up in the fifth but as usual Jack waited too long. As I have said before, Bump has not pitched more than two innings since last June when called up. He pitched over three last Thursday in Philly and came in in the second Friday night when Phelps got in a jam. Bump got him out of it and pitched the third and fourth innings before tiring in the fifth. I remind you that Bump was a starter for his whole career before being called up and put in the pen. I don't think it's an easy transistion. Justin Wayne is doing a great job but I do think they should use him more as a long reliever so that he doesn't lose that stamina that Bump has lost that he did have as a starter.
May 2, 200420 yr Leave Wayne where it is now, in the pen. I rather see Tejera as our 5th starter than Wayne
May 2, 200420 yr DO: AUTOMATIC LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL :banghead Actually the Fish are 2-2 in his 4 starts this year. Doesn't sound automatic to me.
May 2, 200420 yr Lets see how he does today. This is his last chance in my mind and I'm sure in Jack's mind. Guys you have to remmember coming into this trip most everyone said they would be happy with 4-3 well a win today gets that.
May 2, 200420 yr Keep all the negativity coming.....that only ensures that Oliver throws a dandy this afternoon.
May 2, 200420 yr lol...the beg. of this thread is a convo. between oheeoh and ramp...why dont you just get a chat room...lol jk I want to take Oliver out. I think that we can give Justin Wayne a start even though he did bad when he was a starter before...and now he is finally comfterble...but still I think we should move him.
