Burnett will take another step Friday in his comeback from reconstructive elbow surgery, when he makes a start for the team's Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate. Burnett will likely throw a maximum of 100 pitches in that start at Memphis, the Pacific Coast League affiliate of St. Louis. Burnett, who has not pitched in the major leagues since April 2003, could be back in the Marlins' rotation by June 2 against Cincinnati. He was 12-9 with a 3.30 ERA, 203 strikeouts and five shutouts in 2002, yet was shut down after only four starts in 2003. Over 8 1/3 innings of rehab starts this spring, Burnett hasn't allowed an earned run.
