May 30, 200422 yr I keep asking myself this: Beckett is a pitcher, pitchers are used to pitch (obviously), so why the hell has he had and keeps having so many complications with blisters?! Is there any way to strengthen your arm or something to avoid the tenderness?

And yeah, the DL for Beckett is a huge kick to the back of the knee for this team. Lost one ace, got one back.

Beckett is a starter anyway so just replace him with a starter.
May 30, 200422 yr Exactly. Why bring up a starter (AJ) who will just sit on the bench until next week? Are you trying to save the cost of a plane ticket to New Mexico? The reliever will be available for the Reds series and they AJ can pitch in NY when the reliever is sent down. I'm pretty sure that's what will happen.

Don't expect too much from AJ when he first returns. It may take until after the All-Star break until he really gets going. You have to ask why bring someone up from AAA if AJ is about to be reinstated? Must be they are planning to make another roster move the day AJ starts....... ........release Oliver?

Whoever is brought up tomorrow will probably be sent right back on Thursday. If it's a pitcher, it's a way to get another arm in the bullpen for 3 days, which we could use after going through the bullpen today and having Phelps start tomorrow and Willis on Wednesday. Phelps was great last week but he did have an ERA of close to 6.00 as a starter last year. Beckett's injury may actually keep Oliver around. With Beckett healthy and AJ back, we had Phelps in reserve for a spot/emergency start. Now we may need Oliver to do that. While I want to see Oliver gone, I want to hold on to him for 2 more weeks and hope that some team with money to burn will trade some non-prospect for him.

May 31, 200422 yr Could it possibly be his nail bitting that helps contribute to the blister problem? If the blister is near the tip of the finger then this could possibly be the culprit. The friction of the ball against the skin surface of the tip of the finger and the tip of the finger rubbing against the tip of the nail could possibly cause blisters to form.
