June 4, 200422 yr That wasnt my point-whether girls are subject to the draft. My point is that he shouldnt be so callous about sending others people children off to fight his war for oil. Youve got a lot of nerve talking to people the way you do. The legislation was introduced my Democrats, GENIUS. Durr. I tend to have a more open mind regarding partisanship than some people. I dont think what one party does is right and one party does is wrong, so it doesnt matter to me who introduced the bills. My point stands regardless of that and it was more of a general statement than just this particular topic.
June 4, 200422 yr The original thread on the draft: LINK Now what you say Fishfillet? I say the same thing I said before when you started whining about the possibility of a draft.... You'll see a draft over Iraq when monkeys fly out of my arse. To be honest, I saw this a little while ago, but like it was mentioned earlier in this post I also saw that it went to committee, where it will die a slow and quiet death. Just a little political rabblerousing by some no-name congressmen who are trying to make a name within their party. You should also note that new appropriations for the Selective Service are not to implement a draft, but to modernize the system, which hasn't been updated or revamped since the end of Vietnam. You may have also seen articles locally in the Herald or Sun-Sent a couple of weeks ago which ran parrallel to the appropriations, as local draft boards were asking for volunteers to fill selection committee seats locally in SoFla. Once again, not b/c they thought a draft was imminent, but because most local draft boards have half of their seats vacant. Seriously, think logically for a second. What in the world makes you beleive that the US needs (or wants) a draft? Name one reason that is valid (ie, not b/c there is a conspiracy and Bush needs the troops so he can invade Canada or something like that) How many GI's have died in Iraq? I'm guessing not more than the amount of people that died in car accidents in the US over the same period of time.
June 4, 200422 yr That wasnt my point-whether girls are subject to the draft.? ? Youve got a lot of nerve talking to people the way you do. The legislation was introduced my Democrats, GENIUS. Durr. I tend to have a more open mind regarding partisanship than some people. I dont think what one party does is right and one party does is wrong, so it doesnt matter to me who introduced the bills. My point stands regardless of that and it was more of a general statement than just this particular topic. You said: My point is that he shouldnt be so callous about sending others people children off to fight his war for oil. That was your point. "Callous" in this context means instituting a draft. Yet he was not the one to do it. I appreciate your open mind and all, but an open mind doesn't do much when its shell is up your butt-ocks.
June 4, 200422 yr That's exactly what I argue over all the time! It's sad to see our troops being put in harm's way, but the fact is that most of them joined the armed forces in order to gain access to a variety of benefits (i.e. scholarships) in order to pursue other plans. If you're going to join the Armed Forces for whatever reason, you know that you can be deployed anytime, and you have to be ready to face the consequences. Just to make things clear, that doesn't mean I approve of putting them in harm's way just because they volunteered for it. Reopening a draft right now is idiotic IMO for the following reasons: 1) We don't need it, our armed forces are the best in the world, and they're a voluntary corps. The fact that our military serve as volunteers strengthens the argument and the idea that the armed forces aren't a violent group of soldiers, but a group of civilians who decide to SERVE their country in order to protect our freedoms and lifestyle. 2) I acknowledge some validity to arguments saying that the lower classes are the ones deployed when an armed conflict erupts, but it would be ludicrous to send the educated elite and high profile college students who will be the future of this country and it's economy. 3) A compulsory draft reminds me of methods used by dictatorships (i.e. Castro, Hitler) and I would strongly oppose any such measure
June 4, 200422 yr If the Iraq war was for oil we wouldnt be paying as much as we are now for gas. Secondly Ill bring this up again, good ole Abu nidal who helped orchestrate terror missions for black september lived in Iraq under hussein's protection until he was gunned down in 2002 (maybe '01 cant remember) Also Hussein was known to fund Hamas. So lets stop with the no terrorism in Iraq thing. but either way regardless of the reason we went into Iraq, they wouldnt institute a draft, and you know what there would be no greater honor for me than to die for this country, even in Iraq, because the Iraqi war (even though in my opinion the main reason we went in is to have a sphere of influence in an arab country in the middle east) is still a symbol of America's resilience and it is a statement to the world that the USA will not submit to any terrorists or any foreign government.
June 4, 200422 yr Uhmmm Think again... The proposal is asking for women to be included in the draft as well... never would happen. NOW and other Women special interest organizations will take it to court with the support of the White House and Republicans. Actually, while NOW is against the draft, it is their stated policy that if the draft is reinstated that women not be excluded: OPPOSITION TO DRAFT AND REGISTRATION BE IT RESOLVED, that NOW opposes the reinstatement of registration and draft for both men and women. NOW's primary focus on this issue is on opposition to registration and draft. However, if we cannot stop the return to registration and draft, we also cannot choose between sisters and brothers. We oppose any registration or draft that excludes women as an unconstitutional denial of rights to both young men and women. And we continue to oppose all sex discrimination by the volunteer armed services. This policy was adopted by the NOW National Board in January 1980. Link
June 4, 200422 yr call me selfish, but I think that the stupid and uneducated should die before the smart. However, there are many useful people who do necessary manual labor jobs. It is hard to say, but I would rather have stupid people dying off than the smart.

However, there are many useful people who do necessary manual labor jobs. It is hard to say, but I would rather have stupid people dying off than the smart. OUCH-- Not very democratic-minded of you. The concept of political equality recognizes no distinction between men and women, rich and poor, intelligent and stupid. I'm not suggesting that you could not, ala Plato, construct a republic that recognizes these differences, but such a republic would not be a democracy. Thus, the greatest thing about the "greatest generation" and the American army which won WWII was the development of that idea that if the nation (and the nation's ideals) need defending, then it is a responsibility we ALL share.

It is hard to say, but I would rather have stupid people dying off than the smart. Are you suggesting that all poor people are stupid and that all who go to college are smart???? :huh I'm confused. The bill proposes that if the draft is reinstated no one should be excluded or exempted, which I agree.
June 4, 200422 yr The reason that students and the such are not drafted ha snothing to do with intelligence, but its a common sense issue. Young people in college have the potential to contribute most to society, in fact even as a skilled worker at such a young age you will still be in the leanring process and will not be contributed as much just yet. So thats why its been done in the past that college students are exempted.

Ohhh I see your point, so we send to war only the lazy people who don't contribute or won't have the potential to contribute to society. :mischief2 Keep supporting our troops! :thumbup
June 4, 200422 yr Actually even better idea lets send out everyone who has a high paying job, and owns a business. Wake up, economy is based on money. you draft the people who are unemployed and uneducated b/c that wont hurt the economy. Enough with the idealistic gibberish and get real. Soriano was right when he made his comment about smart and stupid people except that ill elaborate on that and say i rather send people who contribute nothign than people who contribute anything, why because thats the way life works, thats the way economy works.
June 4, 200422 yr Seriously, who is more useful to society? Smarter people. Why should we lose the cream of the crop in war unless necessary? And I'm not talking about just rich people, merely educated. It is a hard issue, because there are many people who are smart and useful, but not educated, but many many more are not.

I am going to cut and paste your statement. This is what the people who supposedly "support" our troops think about them: you draft the people who are unemployed and uneducated b/c that wont hurt the economy In other words, if you are a soldier, you need to be unemployed, uneducated and not contribute to the economy. WOW
June 4, 200422 yr The fact is, a couple of crazy democrats are proposing to bring back the draft and its not happening. This is a non-issue.
June 4, 200422 yr I learned this from history. In 1941 Hitler needed troops for the russian front. So, he drafted 90% of his super weapons scientists (probably more) and then in 1943 he realized he made a huge mistake and tried to get what little were not killed. Moral of story: don't send your smartest people to the east to die, you need their brains.
June 4, 200422 yr Cyberlina are you retarded? There is no draft so the my 'uneducated and unemployed" statement does not apply to any of our soldiers.

June 4, 200422 yr I know I just said that as an exagerration to make a point about how liberals are so hell bent on 'protecting' the rights of the lazy
June 4, 200422 yr Cyberlina are you retarded? There is no draft so the my 'uneducated and unemployed" statement does not apply to any of our soldiers. I think the only retarded person here is you. I am absolutely disgusted at your comments. This reflects the thinking of young people like you, who think all poor people are poor because they are lazy and deserve to die in battle for a country and people like you who denigrate them and treat them like dirt. People like you would rather increase military spending to go to an unnecessary war and send young people to die for you, rather than spending on free education and training so this "Stupid" poor people have a chance to contribute to your F***ing society!
June 4, 200422 yr I know I just said that as an exagerration to make a point about how liberals are so hell bent on 'protecting' the rights of the lazy well when is the middle ground going to be reached? conservatives are hell bent on protecting the rights of the elite.

How young do you think I am? I have a degree in political science and im currently beginning work ona master's in that field. I came from a low income family of hard working people, my grandfather was a farmer, my dad was an electrician, none of them went to college. My father always worked hard to put food on the table for me and my siblings and not once did he ask for any govt handouts, b/c he worked for it. You need to wake up and realize that the cancer on our society is caused by people who ARE lazy and dont want to work and are living in a culture of dependancy because te govt keeps giving them handouts and has instituted them in help programs for the poor and if they go over a certain income they loose their benefits, so they refuse to work. These programs are the problem and the people who dont want to work are the problem. I was able to work my way out of being poor by hitting the books, going to college, not a great one but the one that i got a scholarship for. You need to relax with blanket statements b/c instead of throwing more money into useless programs, people need to go out and work. go out to liberty city in miami and then come back and tell me that. And if anything the govt should help people find jobs and not penalize them by kicking them out of public housing if they make too much money (although not enough to buy or rent another kind of housing) No incentive to work thats the cancer that is plaguing our country. the problem is elitists who need to get a pat in the back for helping the poor and who think because your a libertarian or conservative that we're rich and have alwyas been so. I've been there ive seen the way things work and it can be done. A draft should not be done anyway, but if it would you need to get the people that contribute less to society because thats what keeps our society moving. The people who can work and refuse to work are a plague on this country, this is not to say that no one should get help. the elderly and sick need help. But if your 20 and you dont want to do anything with your life except procreate and live off food stamps there is a problem with this person and they hsould not be rewarded for this behavior. By the way my apologies for namecalling I overreacted, sorry for any disrespect
June 4, 200422 yr You are getting a master's in political science and expect to do anything productive for society? Sorry...as a fellow political scientist, I couldn't resist.
