June 10, 200422 yr The lack of patience from people on this board at times amazes me to no end. Sometimes I don't know whether to stop coming, because people are completely out of their mind, or to keep coming for the same reason. AJ Burnett just came back from Tommy John surgery. He came back faster than expected. He is coming back to be the 5th starter on one of the better pitching squads in the majors right now. We cannot have a perfect game thrown every damn day of the week. Not everyone is going to be All Star, Hall of Fame caliber player. Not every player that produces for one month is going to produce for the rest of his life, and vice versa. Many of the fans of our team, the few we actually have despite what attendance numbers tell you, are spoiled. You are all spoiled by winning two World Championships in a span of 7 years, when the club is only 11 years old. Other teams wait decades upon decades, other teams have still yet to taste the thrill of ultimate victory, and we have it twice. We are the defending champions even. Does this mean you win every game? No. Players go entire careers without winning a title. Older, Hall of Fame caliber players get traded from teams they've played with their whole careers just for the chance to win a title. Not for the actual title, but just for a chance. Most never lift the cup, or the trophy, or get the big ring. Most never get to put their lips to the gold or silver piece that says World Champions on it. But we've done it twice. I long for the days of the Firesale ripple effects. Why? Because we weren't spoiled. We loved and lost. Sure, I wasn't aware of any of this until last July, but I was glad to wear my gear with pride in 98 and 99 and root for the team. None of the complainers were there. But now people come out in full force, questioning whether a starter should have more rehab because he didn't come back Cy Young, whether our current Gold Glove caliber shortstop isn't good enough at the plate as compared to our previous shortstop, another Gold Glover. If our current first baseman, in his first full season, showing Gold Glove potential plus the kind of long ball power chicks dig isn't as good as our previous first baseman, who got a grace period. What you people all do to the team on a nightly basis is downright disgusting. I'm not going to say I don't criticize the team at times as well, because I do, as does everyone here. But people, these are 25 human beings on a baseball field. They aren't perfect. Our pitcher, the most talented pitcher on the damn staff IMO, just came back from TJ. Any other staff would be THRILLED at the chance to have what we just got back. Any of them. Cubs, A's, Yankees, Astros, Red Sox all included. Any other fan would slit a wrist to have an AJ Burnett caliber player coming back from injury so quick. And you people whine and complain that he isn't smoking major league lineups yet? Please, all of you. STFU. Man, do you gotta make it look like we're all saying that? It was about 5 or 6 people.
June 10, 200422 yr We have three options. Start A.J. burnett, start phelps, or start oliver. Would phelps or oliver really do that much better? At least Burnett is improving after coming off of major surgery. What are oliver and phelps' excuses for sucking? Since when has Phelps been sucking? He was solid in the pen, and 2 out of his 3 starts have been solid. I'm not saying he's better than AJ I'm just saying that you are wrong for saying he has sucked. Maybe "sucked" was a little extreme. In his last start he got hammered more than anyone I've seen this year. He is an inconsistant starter at best, which begs the question, is it that much of an upgrade over aj? HAMMERED MORE THAN OLIVER?! OH, NO.
June 10, 200422 yr The way Oliver is looking he could be the answer to the 8th inning if Bump can't do it And if Bump can....then maybe we have a solution to the 7th inning All those years in the big leagues....I'm pretty sure Oliver can go all-out for one inning 2 of 3 nights and shut it down. Seemed like Oliver always got through the first inning in his starts...
June 10, 200422 yr He gave up 5 homers in what, 4 innings? I guess that is equal to the DO start in colorado. My point is, he is inconsistant.

June 10, 200422 yr I dont know if anyone has said this yet, but I think its funny that AJ bitched out the FO for holding him back a start and now this. haha. He will be fine in a few starts.
June 10, 200422 yr a little humble pie never hurts. and sure he sucked tonight, but it doesn't bother me much in the long run. hopefully each start he'll gradually get things together. velocity seems ok, he'll have to learn to trust his stuff again, & it might take time. it'll come.

June 10, 200422 yr Great post, except for the "I'm a better fan than you are" stuff. The "better fan than you are" wasn't purposely done, and if that is the only thing you get out of what I wrote, then you are dodging the rest. Jumping to negative thoughts on the purpose of the statements usually points to the statement hitting close to home.
June 10, 200422 yr AJ will be ok, we can second guess all we want, give him a three or four more starts and see if he continues to improve or does worse. He will get his control back, remember this is still his spring training.
June 10, 200422 yr I like the fact he got rocked(not that we lost) he is better than anything on the market right now and better than anything we have in the pen or minors........... he is going to struggle but thats fine with me right now it is expected. and for you thinking Darren Oliver will be a good 8th inning guy you are being extremely stupid........i would love to have some crow on that one but it will never ever happen.... the guy really blows

Please, all of you. STFU. I have no problems with AJ getting rocked. I agree with most of what you posted. AJ will be fine, and his stuff is there. Is all a matter of time. But AJ has a attitude problem: - Stating he is a starter and won't come out of the bullpen (why not let the team skipper decide what is the best for the team? We are in a penant race and sometimes you have to take what is best for the team a sacrifice and little.) - b***hing about the FO not watching his rehab starts, and openly being against additional rehab work in the minors. - Critizising the Skipper openly on the media for moving his start one game (again, what is best for the team comes first, that what is best for AJ. Dontrelle pitched very well, we lost both games but it was the right decision) You can say he is a competitor and that's why he acts this way, I say is immaturity and he is not showing the proper respect for the FO and the coaching staff. I think they all have been very patient, and AJ needs to humble up and try to improve and start listening a bit more. I think Jack left AJ a bit too long on the game last night, maybe the Skipper was trying to drive a point home? we may never know.
June 10, 200422 yr I kind of have a problem with no one from the FO being at AJ's rehab starts too good chance Jim Hendry was at Mark Prior's.
June 10, 200422 yr I kind of have a problem with no one from the FO being at AJ's rehab starts too good chance Jim Hendry was at Mark Prior's. ok, you may be right. But that doesn't give AJ the right to go and whine about it to the media.
June 10, 200422 yr I don't agree at all. It's only a matter of time until he becomes sharp, and if you put him in the pen you don't want him to physically or mentally grow into that role. His fastball DID have movement, and his curve was biting more than it wasn't. He needs a third pitch to offset the two. Putting Burnett in the pen is idiotic. BUt rushing him into a role he wasn't ready for, is brilliant? I have said this for quite some time, way before this season. He was not going to be the same pitcher. What, did what happen to Kerry Wood after he came back slip through most of your heads? If Burnett was healthy he'd have likely had another rehab start. He will be rusty for a bit. The season is a marathon, not a sprint.
