August 8, 200421 yr The AL West is the best division in baseball? :lol 501301 you can make a very strong case for that dood. 501315 The Mariners are the worst team in the AL, Oakland and Texas have overperformed, the Angels have somewhat underperformed. Oakland is the AL division with the worst record. It is balanced, but not the best.

Central has one great team, and a few Average-Above Average teams.
August 8, 200421 yr The AL West is the best division in baseball? :lol 501301 It's called the paper cape, I suggest you read it because they have this neat little thing called a standing bracket, they have three teams who could beat every team in The NL East and then have enough for seconds. What would you say is the best division then, oh cape. And once again what is up with all this crap of you mentioning Beane's track record. You said "Right now", don't switch the subject which you seem to like doing.
August 8, 200421 yr If we don't make the playoffs it's a bad trade, simple as that. Let's not get to excited yet we've only gone 3-3 since the trade against arguably the 3 worst teams in the NL. 501271 What he said. If you're tired of seeing these posts from ran, Furman, myself and others don't post the same thread over and over and over and over.
August 8, 200421 yr Best division in baseball is the National League West. It has 3 teams easily within the playoffs and the two other teams can still be decent on the field compared to the Mariners.

August 8, 200421 yr P.S. Beinfest sucks. He let the greatest player in the game (Pudge) get away. Only got some asian kid with a .250 average and bad defense for Lee. Signed Oliver, who couldn't even pitch in relief. Didn't issue McKeon an ultimatum when Jack wouldn't start OMGNUNEZ. And signed a whole bunch of minor leaguers and has-beens for the most important part of the team: bullpen. He sucks.

August 8, 200421 yr If we don't make the playoffs it's a bad trade, simple as that. Let's not get to excited yet we've only gone 3-3 since the trade against arguably the 3 worst teams in the NL. 501271 The trade has given us a chance at the playoffs, not guaranteed a spot. We have no chance, regardless of how well we play, if the Braves, Cubs, etc. don't help us out a bit. The trade has brought new life to this club, and has brought them out of their doldrums. They may have lost the first 3 games after the trade, but in those games we saw the offense start to wake up. They are playing with enthusiasm, and are a fun product to watch. Are they going to make up 7 games against a team that has gone 17 of 22 since the AS break, and 9 of their last 10? It doesn't seem likely, but it is too early to say we have no chance. I give Beinfest quite a bit of credit for addressing the deficiencies in this club this year, and for giving us a chance of the playoffs. I am confident he will make any moves necessary in the next off-season to fill any remaining holes.

He has many holes in his swing, and our opponents starting exploiting them after the first month. He also has not yet shown he can hit lefty pitching. If he makes substantial improvements in these areas, he could become a star. Whether he does or not will be seen. I have a sense that Penny was gone after the end of the season. So giving him away probably has no effect on the future of the club anyway. If we can sign LoDuca for a year or two, then that would fill the void behind the plate.
August 8, 200421 yr Beinfest is one of the better GMs I think, many of his moves has worked out fairly well and he is still working with pretty big budget limitations. I think it is too early in his career to say he is one of the best, but he is on his way.

If we can sign LoDuca for a year or two, then that would fill the void behind the plate. 501414 We could've traded him at the end of the season like we did Lee and Redman. We saw the kind of deals we got for those guys and Penny has more trade value than both those guys. We could've gotten some real good prospects. and I don't see how we wouldn't have been able to sign Penny but somehow we'll be able to sign Lo Duca.

Given the amount of hype that surrounded him when he first came up the Cubs for him to flop after a breakout season, it would be a pretty big flop. If Penny and LoDuca are due about the same through arbitration, and family members of Penny have suggested that he was willing to sign a long term deal well below the going rate I don't share your optimism in the effort to resign LoDuca. When you trade that level of talent from your active roster and that type of payroll flexibility away you better damn well win now.

August 8, 200421 yr From a business perspective the FO took the correct approach by making the trade. Bolstering the team to make a run for the playoffs will put fannies in the seats, regardless of whether they make it or not. In a year with the stadium deal at stake, the team needs to show the fan base is on the rise. Not making the trade, or trading away the likes of Penny, Pavano and Benitez for prospects would have signaled the end of the season, and attendance would plummet. Fran, you make a good point that we would have traded Penny for some nice prospects in the off-season. But it seems to me there were more considerations to the overall trade than player development. If the trade ultimately helps solidify the stadium deal, then it would contribute greatly to the future of the franchise.
August 8, 200421 yr Holly, You're cute in your pics and all, but ABBA quotes in your sig line???? Come on girl, start listening to some better music. Old school Ace of Base is not something anyone should be listening to. :thumbup :lol 501281 I don't just listen to ABBA! I just like their music! 501311 Holly, ABBA music has lived for years. Muriels Wedding, A*Teens among others have revived it. ABBA is one of the better groups of all time. Nice taste in music :thumbup And you make me talk And you make me feel And you make me show What I'm trying to conceal If I trust in you, would you let me down Would you laugh at me, if I said I care for you Could you feel the same way too I wanna know Oh yes I wanna know That sure is the name of the game!!! Great stuff.
August 8, 200421 yr But it seems to me there were more considerations to the overall trade than player development. If the trade ultimately helps solidify the stadium deal, then it would contribute greatly to the future of the franchise. 501459 I agree with that and I have thought about this also. I think we need to make the playoffs to really help our chances to get a stadium. I do believe we improved our current team. I just don't think we improved it enough to make the playoffs. I hope I'm wrong, I guess we'll find out.
August 8, 200421 yr Seanez, only 1 bad pitch since he arrived Valdez, 6 IP of shutout ball Lo Duca, batting .500, has always been the main guy in Rallies Mota, Save, nothing short of good Carnacion, not doing spectacular, but did good today 2-4 BEINFEST IS THE MAN 501253 Beinfest only gets my vote of supreme confidence IF Lo Duca and Mota are in Marlins uniforms next year. Penny was going to be gone next year because of arbitration, but Choi would have been here and better. If we don't have Lo Duca and Mota back next year at the least, we gave up one of our brightest up and coming hitters with a .900 plus OPS for either a solid catcher or a closer. Just my thoughts. But, the moves are welcomed and very nice to see.
