Alex question

Featured Replies

Why do some people think Alex will be traded?? He is one of the favorites in my family. I would be sooo upset. I know when you love a team and follow them you stick with them no matter what. But when a bunch of your faves are traded....then what????? Makes me sad to think of Alex not on the team.

Glad I got his autograph already....LOL....

Also, why is he called Sea Bass?

B/c he makes 4 million next year and we need to trim payroll to be able to absorb Lo Ducas and Motas salary for next year plus resign Pavano. Also, we have Josh Wilson at AAA who is one of the best defensive shortstops in the minors and he can hit for a good avarage (has a better than .300 avg while playing in AA and AAA this year)

Ramon Castro was a great hitter in Triple A.....Nuff said...

Alex isn't going anywhere. $4 mil won't trim that much off of the payroll.

I bet you would've said the same thing when we had a SS named Edgar Renteria and we had Alex Gonzalez at AAA hitting .290. No way could we part w/ Edgar, but guess what we did and we brought up Alex. You'll see that it will happen sooner than later.

While I am probably baised, I too agree it would be a mistake to deal Gonzalez now. He's finally coming into his own, and although he still needs to work on making consistent contact, If it werent for the first month of the season he'd be around a .270 hitter. He leads the NL SS's in HR's and RBI's and I dont even need to start on his defensive value to this team.

Wilson may be good, who knows, but we need to learn from the past -- you dont hand starting jobs to young kids, let them earn it like Miguel did, and Dontrelle did when they were called up to the bigs last year.

Gonzo is too valuable to this team to let him go. He saves AT LEAST one run in what seems like almost every game we play and he leads all NL shortstops in the offensive category that matters most, especially for a batter hitting 8th: RBI. Seabass is EVERYTHING a manager could ask for from an 8 hole hitter and loads more.

Keep Agon and give Enc away for a bag of baseballs or something...

FINALLY something I can agree with 100%

I agree so much it's amazing.

Personally, I don't see us being forced to trim payroll because we did negotiate all these contracts with the current ownership, so it's not as if Loria's trying to get rid of Henry's mistake. He gave Alex a 2 year deal, Luis and Lowell four year deals, etc. with the understanding that he'd have to pay them to stay competitive.

Personally, I think that Luis will be the first of the starters to be traded (if necessary) but I honestly don't see us dealing any of our starters. Remember, Lo Duca excluded, they're all under contract for next year, so Loria had to anticipate this pay-roll when he OK'd the contracts...

I dont want him gone but I feel he will be gone in order to keep this pitching staff in tact

in fact, I expect the club to have 3 rookies next year in Aguila, Willingham and Wilson(SS)

I think keeping this pitching staff long term is more important than SS. I love Agon, and have been a supporter of him, but I would not be surprised to see him gone. $4 million can be the difference from Pavano starting or a AAA pitcher every 5 days. Would you rather have Pavano and a decent SS or a AAA pitcher and AGon every 5 days?

Would Aguila and Willingham still be considered rookies next year even though they've already played in the big show this year?

Willy won't have had enough ABs, time will tell on Aguila.

The reason we should trade Alex Gonzalez besides that he makes $4 million is that he is statistically the second worst hitter in baseball. he has a .272 on base percentage, which is up about 12 points from the .260 he was at a week ago (when he was statistically the single worst hitter in baseball). It is devastating to a lineup when a player is getting out 74% and now 73% of the time. He is virtually an automatic out. And in response to the quote about how he would be a .270 hitter without the first month, you could also look at it that he would be a .200 or worse hitter without that stretch against interleague play. Alex Gonzalez goes into such long, deep, and pronounced slumps so often that he cripples a lineup. His week or two of hitting does not outweigh the 5 weeks he will hit .150. Couple that with Encarnacion's .290 OBP (meaning he gets out 71% of his plate appearances) and put a pitcher behind the two, and Marlins pretty much give away 9 outs or three innings a game. That means that we only have a chance to really score 6 out of 9 innings. A player cannot get out at that rate without hurting his team.

The Marlins could easily (and more cheaply) replace Alex with a guy who is close if not as good as him in the field and, at the same time, not have this guy devastate the team offensively. Perhaps Josh Wilson is that man.

It is clear that I am not an Agon fan. In fact, I boo him and Encarnacion at most games. However, I do think that Agon has potential. Unlike Encarnacion, his bat speed and hand-eye coordination are not his problem. He just has possibly the worst control of the strike zone and plate discipline in the league. I read one account, which said he was a reactive hitter. Meaning he pretty much swings at anything regardless of the count or situation. He doesn't look to drive the ball in hitter's counts or foul off pitches in hitter's counts. he just swings, reacts, to every pitch and whatever happens happens. the point of this is that he can be a good hitter if he learns not to be a reactive hitter and learns pitch selection. However, it is debateable if any player, especially him, could learn that this late in a career in the majors.

The Marlins would be much better off moving Gonzalez and Encarnacion. but that is why the marlins should trade him. Plus for some strange reason i don't understand, people think he is good, so maybe we can get some good prospects for him.

A-rod was also a pretty good hitter in AAA. You can't say everyone from AAA will suck because Castro did horrible this year.

well he does have sick D and leads the NL in rbi and HR

and he is relatively young

You need to realize that OBP isn't everything, infact OBP means absolutely nothing considering the fact that he's producing runs. It doesn't matter if he gets on base, who's going to drive him in? Josh Beckett? AJ Burnett? Carl Pavano? Please. OBP means nothing for someone being protected by the pitcher, when someone batting 8th gets on you almost never expect them to score with the pitcher batting behind them unless it's 0 outs and the pitcher sac bunts you into scoring position which is not often at all.

Alex leads all NL shortstops in RBI with 61, the next closest is Edgar Renteria with a mere 52 so how can you honestly sit there and tell me that he is the worst offensive shortstop in the league and a guaranteed out in the lineup when he has driven in the more runs than ANY OTHER SHORTSTOP? Barry Larkin who is hitting a ridiculous .410 in the past month has produced a mere 8 RBI, compared to Gonzo whose batting average is almost half that, yet he's driven in 21 RBI, almost 3 times as many. All this, not to mention the fact that his defense SAVES RUNS almost every single game that he starts, he's probably saved more runs than he's produced, the double play combo of Alex and Luis is the best in all of baseball and you don't just break that up for the sake of saving a couple of dollars.

Unless they make the mistake of signing oft-injured Beckett to lucrative long-term deal I could see Pavz, Beckett, Burnett, Mota back at the expense of LoDuca and Enc.

You know how I feel about the Choi/Penny trade, but do we want to give up a 27yo gold glove shortstop who is turning into a HR machine to keep a 32yo slap-hitting catcher and 28yo 5-tool RF flop?

Josh Wilson's doing well in the minors, but we have a better backup plan at catcher and outfield/1B. Willingham has the bat, and will do much better behind the dish coming out of spring training. Aguila is gaining valuable experience right now, and Stokes, for all his strikeouts and lapses on defense, is decent.

No dude....Obviously.

What I meant was that a player doing well in Triple A does not mean it's time to get rid of the veteran playing that position on the big club. It's a good sign, but far from a guarantee. Alex has been very solid... I've seen some great points rebutting some obvious Gonzo haters... How can anyone say he's the worst hitter while he's leading all shortstops in RBI's??

He may not get on base at the pace we'd all like to see, but he's shown that he gets on base when it counts and drives in runs when it counts. The other day when he bunted his way on to get something going is proof of what a great baseball mind he has. You can tell he did that on his own. Jack didn't call for that. The plays he makes on defense... and I don't mean the great diving plays, I mean the instincts he has on the field are not something you can teach. The guy is the best defensive shortstop in the majors, in my opinion. Defense is so underrated nowadays..

You guys watch. If we get rid of A-Gon, you'll see a difference. Josh Beckett was even once quoted saying "If I ever get traded, I'm taking Alex Gonzalez with me." That's how much the pitchers love having him behind them.... No way would I get rid of him..

All you prove here is why OBP is such an overrated stat. The glass can be half empty or full, but you forgot to mention the fact that he leads all NL short stops in HR and RBI. Couple that with the gold glove defense and you have youself a bargain at $4mil per.

Let me ask you this -- and im NOT trying to take a shot at Choi because I like him. But who do you think was more productive? Choi is just as streaky as Alex, his OBP is extremely good, yet Gonzalez has been a much more productive player than Choi. He's 3rd on this team in RBI batting in the 7th/8th holes all year...thats impressive considering he had Mike Redmond and the pitcher protecting him most of the year.

You know, I am the biggest critic, and I don't really know how I feel about Alex Gonzalez.

I know this, he seems to always get into Long Extended slumps, he doesn't have good command of the strike zone (most of the time). He doesn't walk enough for a guy batting in front of the pitcher, which translates to a lot of strikeouts and unproductive out's. With that said, he has shown that he has good power and can hit the long ball and drive in runs, no doubt there. He also has had a lot of clutch hits this year, probably not as many as times he has choked in clutch situations. But I would prefer a .300 AVG with .350 OBP and lower RBI and HR numbers. I think this would translate into more runs for the team in the long run.

I love Alex's glove but his bat leaves much to be desired. So, I would say I am impartial, if he stays, great, I will root for him to do well and hope he gets better. But if he goes I just hope that they do it for someone who has proven he can play shortstop and hit the ball. But I will certainly not BOO Agon at everygame. don;t get me wrong Alex deserves to be boo'd on occasion, but to BOO him at everygame just because you don't like him is rediculous. This is a team sport and last time I checked Alex is part of this team and deserves our support. If he fails miserably and deserves to be bood for his performance that night then fine. But I will be cheering him on the very next AB hoping he comes thru.
