Okay experts....have another question.....

 

There was an article in the Sun-Sentinel today that the Giants Manager was pissed about Juan Pierre stealing on Tues night when we had a 7 run lead. He said it was "offensive and irresponsible" and they decided "not to take action".

 

Are you not supposed to steal when you have such a big lead? What is the big deal? So are they going to hit one of our players with a pitch because they're pissed? I don't get it.

It's fine. Like I mentioned here yesterday, we had a bigger lead earlier in the season vs the Giants and blew it. It's fine to steal up 7-0 in the 1st. Felipe Alou is losing his mind.

There's an unwritten rule that alot of the little things baseball players do to try to get a lead (steal bases, bunt, tag up on shallow flies, etc.) should not be done after a team has a big lead. However, in this instance is it ok for Pierre to run because:

 

- It's still the first inning, the Giants have 24 outs left to work with

- It was only Juanpy's second bat in the game, and he was a starter

- The Marlins lost when having scored 9 runs in the first two innings against these same Giants

 

Marquis Grissom basically told it the way it is. You don't stop doing the little things in a blowout until the leading team has batted for the fifth time (making it an official game). That's why none of the reserves are brought in until after that time.

The fact is Alou's comments were meant to embarrass Loria and the organization, and perhaps inspire his team a bit after being routed, and little to do with the rules (written or otherwise) of the game.

 

Alou was simply showing what a classless, venous individual he really is. One would think he'd be over it by now but obviously he isn't.

Isn't it JP's job to steal bases? And the job of all players to score as many points possible because of the possiblitiy the other team can come up from behind and win? I think that game we played with the Giants earlier where we were ahead 9-0 in the 1st inning and they won 12-9 was in JP's mind. So he did right.

I also read something about Al-Leiter saying something about bush league and the marlins. What is bush league anyways?

I don't think Alou is a bad guy. He probably did say it to see if it would motivate his team... Nothing more, nothing less.

 

There was nothing wrong with JP stealing in that situation.
