Cubs series may change

BY KEVIN BAXTER

With Hurricane Frances bearing down on Florida's Atlantic Coast, Chicago Cubs president Andy MacPhail spoke with MLB president Bob DuPuy on Tuesday to express concern about this weekend's scheduled three-game series between the Cubs and Marlins in Miami.

The path of the Category 4 hurricane is uncertain, but even if the brunt of the storm misses South Florida, the area could be swept by hurricane-force winds sometime Friday, and one proposal MacPhail reportedly discussed with DuPuy would call for a doubleheader to be played Friday, after which the Cubs would try to leave town. The third game would then be made up in Chicago on the weekend of Sept. 10.

P.J. Loyello, the Marlins' vice president of communications, said the Marlins have not been approached with any proposed changes to this weekend's schedule. The team would likely oppose the plan MacPhail and DuPuy reportedly discussed because it would cost the Marlins a home game against the team they're chasing in the wild-card race, and it would force the Marlins' thin pitching staff into a doubleheader after a span in which they have played 10 games in as many days.

The Cubs finish a three-game series in Montreal tonight and are scheduled to arrive in Fort Lauderdale early Thursday, about the time South Florida could be under an official hurricane alert. The Marlins were expecting huge crowds for the weekend series, the only South Florida visit of the season for Sammy Sosa and the Cubs.

UNFORGETTABLE

Armando Benitez is making sure his former fans and teammates with the New York Mets don't forget about him. Nine of his National League-leading 39 saves have come against the Mets this season, tying the record for most saves against one team and, as Benitez said before Tuesday's game, ``We're not done yet.''

In those nine games with New York, Benitez has given up a run on four hits in 10 1/3 innings, striking out 11. And while he clearly gets added satisfaction out of beating the Mets, who gave up on him last summer after 6 ? seasons, he refuses to gloat.

''That's what people want me to do,'' he said. ``But I don't want to do that. Everybody knows what I can do.''

While he won't show up his old team, he's willing to consider rewarding his new one. The veteran right-hander, who has the lowest ERA (1.08) and opponent's batting average (.142) among major-league relievers, will be a free agent after the season and is likely to receive more lucrative offers than the Marlins can afford to pay.

That doesn't mean he won't be back, however.

''I didn't come here looking for records or this kind of stuff. What I did look for is someone to give me the opportunity, give me the chance to be in the game and do my job,'' said Benitez, who hasn't allowed a run in his past 11 outings and has given up two in his past 23 1/3 innings dating to June 15. ``And that's what the Marlins gave to me, and I really appreciate it. That's all I was looking for.''

LARGE COLLECTION

The Marlins raised more than $43,000 for victims of Hurricane Charley during last week's six-game homestand.

The team made $18,550 in its online auction then reached into its own pocket to match that amount, bringing the auction proceeds to $37,100, In addition, the American Red Cross collected more than $5,300 in donations from fans, and the Marlins Community Foundation raised another $952.

How 'bout a double header Sunday and they come down here October 4. Imagine that. Game of the year, winner wins Wild Card. 66K in the Pro. That wouldn't be so bad would it?

switch the series, we play the snubs in chicago later in the year, so just switch the location of the series...play this weekend in chitown, and then the series meant to be there can be played here (if PPS still exists)

CANNOT BE DONE!! The Dolphins play at Pro Player Stadium next Sunday (9/12) so the stadium is unavailable next weekend (that's why the Marlins were in Chicago).

ya, i figured that was the reason

technically we would probably be the home team in one of the games in the DH...

I would assume

I think it would be both. Right?

sorry, i meant if there was a DH in Chitown

Still unfair.

And no guarantee of that, afterall SF got to be the hometeam for both 2 weeks ago vs Montreal.

Are you kidding me? They better not get 4 f***ing games over there. That's complete BS. Even if we are the "home" team, the fans are obviously going for the Cubs...it doesn't even compare to really being at home. They better not do this s***! :mad :

MLB rules state the home tenant must always bat last unless it is at a neutral venue.

Remember when tiles were falling from the King Dome before the 94 strike? The Mariners had to rescheduled all their games at their opponents ballpark and batted as the visiting team.

if the cubs want us to agree to 4 games in chicago, we might as well throw in a player to be named later too.

chi-town, don't tread on me!

So what if the Dolphins play? they can get that stadium converted pretty fast we can still play on FRI and SAT..make SAT a or FRI a double header and that's it problem s0lved.

How bout the cubs get 4 home games as long as they loose all of them???

Still it would be BS that they get 4 Games to "BOO" our team and i hear Lee Is feeling Emotional now

It COULD BE DONE. Doubleheader either Fri or Saturday, meaning we WONT have to play Sunday!

How about a doubleheader in Miami on the 20th... then a game at the end of the season if needed
