October 7, 200422 yr Pitching coach gets hook BY CLARK SPENCER cspencer@herald.com Wayne Rosenthal said he isn't sure whether his strained relationship with some Marlins pitchers led to his dismissal Sunday from the major-league staff. But the pitching coach for the Marlins said he was ''baffled'' by the front office's decision to remove him from his post. ''I was prepared for it, but I didn't expect it,'' said Rosenthal, who was one of three coaches the Marlins decided not to bring back next season. ``They said I didn't communicate well with the pitchers. If they didn't respond to me, then I guess they need somebody here they can respond to. ``I got a World Series ring, but that's last year. I guess I did a pretty good job last year and didn't do a very good job this year.'' Rosenthal and bench coach Doug Davis were offered jobs within the organization at the minor-league level -- Rosenthal as pitching coach for the Double-A Carolina Mudcats and Davis as a minor-league coordinator. Neither Rosenthal nor Davis had decided whether to accept the offers or search for work in another organization. Bullpen coach Tony Taylor was fired. Only Rosenthal and Taylor stuck around to work the season finale Sunday. ''We're trying to advance things at the major-league level, and we felt these changes would be part of the advancing phase,'' Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest said. Hitting coach Bill Robinson, third-base coach Jeff Cox and first-base/infield coach Perry Hill were all offered contracts. A few Marlins pitchers, including starters Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett, had increasingly become disenchanted with Rosenthal, who replaced Brad Arnsberg as pitching coach when Jack McKeon was hired last May to manage the team. The relationship had deteriorated late in the season to the point where Beckett and Burnett seldom spoke to Rosenthal. Former Marlins pitcher Brad Penny, traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July, also had his differences with Rosenthal. Rosenthal refused to address the issue. ''I gave everything I had to coach here,'' Rosenthal said before Sunday's game. ``We're five games over .500 with a chance to be six over, and I think that's a good year.'' Rosenthal pointed out that the Marlins starters, despite injuries to Beckett and a half-season from Burnett, ranked fourth in the National League with a 4.05 earned-run average. Beinfest said McKeon would provide input on choosing replacements. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sport...all/9829860.htm

October 7, 200422 yr Will everyone STOP bickering about Rosie getting fired...I dont know about you but when our STUDS on our pitching staff do not trust their pitching coach and managment feels the same way then something has to be done !

October 8, 200422 yr who the hell will be our pitching coach. They fire two good pitching coaches now (arny and rosey). They think its the coaches fault for our problems?

When the pitchers and front office dont trust the pitching a change needs to be made, Why ? because when they arent being respected they arent getting their point across thus failing to be effective. For all of you who think this is the doing of just the Pitchers I am sure management asked for Jack's opinion on this matter, because after all he is on Jack's coaching staff, apparently either Jack didnt have much influence (which i think is not the case), or Jack didnt have much to say against it...If jack truly felt Rosie was needed dont you think that Rosie would still be here, I do.

Managment told him they were firing Arnsberg and Torborg basically said if they fire Anrie then they have to boot him too. We know how that ended. However, I don't think this is the same situation. If Jack wasn't happy coaching he would be kicking back somewhere. There just might not have been chemistry between the guys and Rosie and they aren't going to get rid of the guys so they have to get rid of Rosie.

October 8, 200422 yr I think you thought my post was questioning what you said. I agree with you, I was questioning Billy Goat.

If u think Burnett sucks, then you dont watch much games. Ok, hes not great, but he doesnt suck..And Beckett...Im with u on that.
October 8, 200422 yr Anyone else seeing a pattern here? Lots of folks thought Arnsberg did a great job, but he had problems communicating with the pitchers, same thing for Rosey. Are the Fish pitchers e.g. Beckett, Burnett prima donnas? I hate to see Rosy go, but I think they should bring in Hough to replace him.
October 9, 200422 yr I think we're forgetting something.... This was really McKeon's first chance to name his own coaches. He came in during the middle of last season, & certainly wasn't going to make a bunch of changes after winning a world series. True a lot of the reasons behind this are Beckett & AJ, but perhaps McKeon is more involved in this decision than we'd think. & if Admin Bowa is hired I'll scream.
