Easley has received a handful of offers from other teams, including some that would afford him a chance to start. Among Easley's priorities is playing for a contender. The Marlins are having less luck attracting free agent David Dellucci. They are one of seven teams to offer the left-handed hitting Dellucci a contract, but he will likely sign elsewhere. ... Former Phillies manager Admin Bowa no longer is being considered for the bench coach job. It would be a good move to keep him. Easley is a key player off the bench, and can play just about everywhere.

November 20, 200421 yr We may be willing to pay a little more than others for Easley (just my guess) because signing him and gaining his ability to competently play so many positions allows the team the chance to fill some of the remaining bench positions with kids like Aguila (read MLB minimum). When you average a few extra bucks for Easley with two or three minimum wage players it all works out rather nicely.

November 21, 200421 yr terrific news. I'm glad to have him on the team, not so much for the pinch-hitting, more for his spot-starting & in case of injuries. Plus the power potential off the bench is nice too. Why he's not getting more of a look from other teams is puzzling.

Right now the only players the Marlins can sign without giving up draft picks are minor leaguers (Frank Castillo, Travis Smith and others have been signed) and 2004 Marlins (Easley, Lenny Harris, Chad Fox, Pavano offered contracts). I'd much rather Beinfest to just talk until December 7th, offer arbitration to Pavano and Benitez and see what the team has to work with. Unless they're looking to move or acquire a restricted free agent such as LoDuca or Gibbons. The Marlins are built around good young talent. Some recent bad drafts and in-season trades have decimated the level of the minor league system. For the Marlins to continue to remain competitive, both the major league and minor league product will need to be addressed this offseason.

November 22, 200421 yr The Nats are not a better team by replacing Izturis-Batista-Rivera for Guzman-Castilla-Guillen. Izturis was hitting the hell out of the ball in AAA and is a top-rated prospect. Probably projects to have a better career than Guzman. Rivera is Guillen, only two years younger. The same can be said for 'proven run producers' Batista and Castilla. What exactly have the Mets done? Talk? Reports are that Beinfest has been talking with teams and agents about players much better than Sosa. Re-signing Kris Benson? A league-average pitcher at $7MM?! Give it time. Loria/Samson/Beinfest may overpay slap-hitters and keep around mediocre veterans, but they'll field a competitive team for 2005 and should push for the playoffs.
