"Inside Dish: Giants may shift focus to Benitez"

Here are the parts that relate to the Marlins:

Look for the Giants to make a push for free-agent closer Armando Benitez. The team appears stalled in its negotiations with closer Dustin Hermanson, who is believed to be seeking a two-year deal in the $6 million range. Benitez's price also is high ? he wants a three-year contract between $21 million and $24 million ? but he's coming off a season in which he converted 47 of 51 saves and posted a 1.29 ERA. He likely would be comfortable under Giants manager Felipe Alou, a fellow Dominican. ...

It's possible the Red Sox, Orioles, Mariners or Tigers might overpay for free-agent RHP Carl Pavano, but some in the industry suspect that Pavano will return to the Marlins if the team increases its offer from three to four years. If the Red Sox re-sign Martinez, it might be difficult for them to land Pavano and still address other needs. As for the Yankees, if Pavano truly wanted to play for them, he probably would not have fired Derek Jeter's agent, Casey Close. ...

LHP Eric Milton could become an option for the Marlins if they lose Pavano, and Pro Player Stadium would be a good fit for a pitcher who allowed 43 homers last season, second most in the majors. Citizens Bank Park wasn't the sole reason for Milton's total; he allowed 20 homers in 104 1/3 innings at home, 23 in 96 2/3 innings on the road. The Phillies want to retain Milton, and the Yankees, Cardinals, Indians, Orioles and Mets all have shown interest. ...

Free-agent C Henry Blanco might have overplayed his hand ? he liked it in Minnesota, but rejected a two-year, $2.5 million offer from the Twins, who then signed free-agent C Mike Redmond to a two-year, $1.8 million contract. Redmond, 33, doesn't throw as well as Blanco, but his .348 career on-base percentage is 60 points higher. The Twins' other free-agent signing, IF Juan Castro, 32, is another player with superior makeup. He can play every infield position, and the Twins think he's a tougher out than his career .269 OBP would indicate. Neither signing cost the Twins a draft pick. ...

Say this for the Reds: They're aiming high in trade discussions. They requested A's RHP Rich Harden for OF Austin Kearns and Marlins RHP Josh Beckett for OF Adam Dunn. ...

Beckett for Dunn doesn't seem like a bad deal to me...

I would do it.

622858

I wouldn't do it until we either resign Pavano, or replace him with someone else.

beckett for Dunn?

throw in kearns as well and maybe its even.

beckett has had the bad luck of being injury plagued and is still a stud when healthy. id take a stud pitcher over a K prone outfielder anyday.

no way.. dont give up on beckett. the guy is obviously a stud who has had blister problems. as soon as he stays healthy, you will all be on his bandwagon again as he puts up ridiculous numbers

decline

You're right Dunn and his what 40+ hrs is not a stud. What good would he do between lowell and cabs, he ks too much huh? We have a better chance of signing another pitcher than a lefty bomber.

Wow Benitez wants taht much? Tahats freakin ridiculous

what did percival just get?

who's better?

you do the math.

Milton wouldn't be that bad..

I'd still rather have Pavano back

you rarely trade pitching for hitting.

pitching wins in the playoffs.

ask the cardinals about this basic truth.

So you think the Marlins should keep the offense they have? They are not going to sign any other heavy hitter in free agency. And it is apparent they need to improve their offense, its hard to win if on a good night you score 3 or 4 runs. Dunn would add a lot of hitting and take away our 2 or 3 or 4 pitcher, depends if Pav comes back and if you like AJ or D-train more. Even if Pav doesn't come back Josh is #2, I would trade a #2 pitcher to give you in a line up back to back to back guys who can hit 30+ hrs each and go r-l-r.

adam dunn? the guy bat .266 last year. he`s a career .249 hitter. that`s a joke.

622879

last year: .266/46/102

Yeah he sucks. In fact I think the Marlins offense would be hurt if you added him. :plain

No closer is worth 8 million a year except maybe Rivera

i dont know if even rivera`s worth that much anymore, you`ve got to think he`s lost some of the psychological edge on the opposition after the 2004 postseason.

as for signing milton - bad idea. he`s a career 4.76 ERA who`s never had an ERA below 4.32 (excluding 2003, when he only pitched 3 games). i have no idea why the phillies give this guy $9mil last year - he`s about as mediocre as it gets

Wow, some of you people are freakin' nuts. You'd trade a guy that blew away the Yankees and Cubs in the playoffs for Adam Dunn? :shifty

When Beckett gets his blister problem under control, he'll easily be a top 5 pitcher in baseball once Randy and Clemens retire. Dunn will never be a top 5 position player in baseball.

Meh, Beckett got blown away a few times last year. What's your point? If we can get Dunn and he adds 40+ HRs and 110+ RBIs and plays everyday, I'd rather have him then Beckett who has yet to put together a full season where he lived up to expectations (03 Playoffs not included).

becketts like 24 years old!!! you guys are crazy

there have been plenty of pitchers who have blister problems when they were young.

You don't trade away talent like him.. no way

Yeah, lets trade away the ONLY pitcher on our damn staff that has proven he can get the job done under a lot of pressure against a great team. GREAT strategy! :whistle

If we're trading a young starting pitcher, offer up D-Train and Stokes for him. Trading Beckett is completely idiotic.

Pavano and Penny were crap in the 03 Playoffs too, Beckett had to save their collective asses. Heck, we're already without those two, might as well dump Beckett for some crap player who "only" has the ability to hit 40-50 HRs and 110+ RBIs per year. Since we're such an offensive juggernaut there's no need for such frivolous transactions...
