Of course I know that the bullpen is the biggest need, but take a look at these bench batting numbers:

Mike Redmond: .235, 0 HRs

Ramon Castro: .294, 4 HRs

Andy Fox: .214, 0 HRs

Mike Mordecai: .205, 0 HRs

Brian Banks: .223, 4 HR's

Todd Hollandsworth: .254, 2 HRs

How does this qualify as good? I think we could use maybe one more player, but I'm not saying it's a higher priority than the pen.

Don't make me get the pen's numbers.

Yes, I know they're way worse. This is just a second or third priority behind pitching. It was our incredible depth in 1997 that helped win the Series.

Because everyone can admit that the team needs something to help them get to the playoffs, I figured that I'd list what I believe we could use. Feel free to add something, or tell me your opinion.

1. Setup man in the 'pen

2. Any decent relievers, especially cheap ones.

3. Another starting pitcher, to replace Carl Pavano.

4. Maybe a change at 1st base

5. A strong left-handed bat

6. Another bench player, because I figure we could add some depth there.

7. A left fielder, maybe...

I'd also like to hear what players are available that we could get. I know a few, but maybe there are some I'm not thinking of.

Lets see.

A setup man. Yes you need one, mainly due to the injury to Spoonybarger.

The middle relief is solid. The only upgrade you really need is from the lefthanded side. I would like to pick up a lefthanded veteran reliever.

As far as starters. Pavano is fine. You are not going to have all stars throughout your rotation. Phelps would be an obvious second choice to replace Pavano if he pitches poorly for an extended stretch.

Sure you can get a change at first, the only option right now being the rumored Conine-Lee trade.

Left handed bats will not be found. Especially strong ones.

The bench is decent. I would like some additional flexibility, but its a good bench.

Miguel Cabrera is going to be a star. He continues to grow more and more comfortable in left field and will continue to thrive. He is going a very good job offensively, especially out of the 8 hole.

What players do you suggest for this team to acquire? Since you are a FutureGM and all?

And lets be logical about any potential dealings instead of the usual wild ideas that are thrown out on the table.

the bench is pretty solid....

stats dont tell the whole story

How can the bench be pretty solid? To begin with, we have a 3rd catcher sitting down who comes out every 50 games or so. We don't have a reliable pinch-hitter. And all the guys we have are batting in the 200s. The only guy batting close to 300 is Castro and, like I said, he never plays.

I would say we need first, bullpen help, then bench help or a veteran bat. A starter like Ponson would be nice, but... :confused

how can any of you be against Benitez?

check the stats the last 3 years.... you will be shocked just how good he is

Our bench is very solid...

If that's true, then why would we go out of our way today to trade for Chris Donnels, who we got from the Cubs?

If we can get Lightenberg in a deal with Conine, we have to do it, because he is one of the best setup guys out there.

He was part of the reason the Atlanta bullpen was unstoppable last year. Now, they've lost most of those players.

This trade would be a dream come true...would Angelos do it? :mischief2

Angelos is one of the strangest owners I've seen. He's concerned about a team in the Washington area taking his revenue, but he has had crappy teams on the field for over 5 years now. Without Ripken, the O's are nothing. (although Melvin Mora's doing OK, but he's no Cal Jr.)
