Thoughts on the Leiter Deal?

Featured Replies

I must say, this was the best signing we've made in a long time. Finally, we have a respected veteran influence on the young staff.

Put Leiter and Lo Duca together as a positive influence and there's a reason to really be excited about our pitching staff finally reaching it's potential.

I'd like to vote for another option - I don't like it. At that price, the money could've gone to someone younger, like Odalis Perez or Matt Clement.

A player like Odalis Perez wouldn't bring half the value that Al Leiter does to this team. I think people really underestimate the importance of having a respected veteran like Al Leiter, especially for guys like Burnett and Beckett who think they've got it all figured out.

I absolutely LOVE this move... Hopefully, Al will remain a member of the Florida Marlins organization once he retires. I don't care in what capacity... He has always been one of my favorite players... One of the true nice guys in baseball.

i like the signing but we did over pay just a little...

now go after one more pitcher like O.perez,valdez,wright,ortiz...

also trade enc and get ordonez or drew to play of...

Anyone who owns a home here, especially near the shore, knows that the costs of insurance have skyrocketed.

The same thing is true in baseball and the Leiter signing was, in my estimation, done in part as an insurance policy to provide some offset against the eventuality of Pavano leaving at a time when many if not most of the logical and/or affordable alternatives might no longer be on the market.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, the old saying goes. Leiter is here regardless of what Pavano does. For that the Marlins paid a bit extra but where would they be a month from now if they didn't make this move?

Personally I'd like to see them forget about re-signing Pavano. I suspect for all their posturing they have. They got what they set out to do and will be compenated with draft picks regardless of where he signs.

Move on before we're left with less attractive alternatives. Make a move on Clement, get in the game for a couple of others and sign Valdez sooner rather than later. With the injuries our staff has had in the last few years we need six potential starters. Use Valdez out of the pen if you have to ala Rick Helling but keep that arm on the staff because let's face, someone will go down.

It was a good move for one year, anything more than one year I would be skeptical, I am a bit skeptical on Leiter performing this year, but I figure in this ballpark he should be alright, the Marlins are smart they gave him a one year deal so they can have financial flexibility next year, I feel that this team is coming together and that next offseason we should be on a different level financially

i dont know if you guys have noticed but al leiter sucks and we shouldve added that to the deal we gave pavano and we ought to have signed a good lefty bat life drew. IMO

you are f***ing idiot.

Thanks to this one year deal, and contracts such as Encarnacion, Hampton, and Conine coming off the books, we could get Burnett and Beckett signed long term (plus resign Juan Pierre) AND make a spalsh or two in the FA market next year.

Now answer this who would u rather have carl pavano or Al Leiter who cant even last more than 7 innings per night. WE shouldve signed clement, perez or resign pavano...

In Other Words YES HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please stop...just stop.

answer my question who would u rather have

631064[/snapback]

if money is no issue, I would rather have Carl Pavano

but because money is an issue, I think I would rather have Leiter at 1 year, $8mil than Pavano at 4 year $40mil or whatever he will get

to say Al Leiter sucks though is just ignorant

OK, let's try to follow your logic here...

I'd rather have Albert Pujols over Manny Ramirez.... Therefore, Manny Ramirez sucks... Nice one... :thumbup

Dude, what's up with the mix of capitals and lower case letters? Are you trying to create your own trademark?

As for Leiter, it was a great pickup. He's not only a great pitcher, but he'll provide leadership in the clubhouse, which Burnett and Beckett need badly.

I agree with the signing of Leiter, but we probably could have picked up an equally qualified pitcher for that price. We clearly overpayed.
