December 12, 200421 yr It was that disturbing of an article, the Marlins will get the stadium deal done once the state gets their heads out of their ass...the deal will be done, and the Marlins will be in Miami to stay
December 12, 200421 yr This is what I don't get. Eveyone says this is a bluff for the Marlins so they just get a better deal to stay in S. Fla. My question is, why are the Marlins commited to S. Florida and has Loria ever said he is? From what I have read about Loria from ESPN and Fox, he likes money, he wants a stadium. I don't think he gives a rat's @$$ about S. Fla. I don't think they are committed to S. Fla outside of the fact that is the fanbase they are trying to appease right now. In my opinion this move just shows that Loria just wants his team and his stadium in America, he doesn't care where. Go read old articles about when Loria first took over the team all the talk was how he'll probably move them to get his stadium if he can't get it in a few years. Well he has waited and it looks like what ESPN and the rest said is coming true.

December 12, 200421 yr But they would have the entire state to themselves, and imagine if they get in on New Mexico too. What does Fox South West cover? Because if you get Reno, Vegas, and Alberquerque that market would be bigger than our coverage. There is nothing out there. If this was as simple as looking at the number of cable subscribers everyone would shoot this down.

FSN West, FSN West 2, Cox Padres Channel 4, FSN Arizona, and FSN Bay Area all cover LV in MLB games.
December 12, 200421 yr Author Think Milwaukee, Montreal, or Kansas City TV revenues are bad....in LV they will be so low that the team will whore off players to the show girls to turn a profit.
December 12, 200421 yr I think it's pretty evident that Loria wants this to happen in South Florida... I also think the meeting with Las Vegas was for Loria to show that he's serious about a stadium, but also to show the local government to get their sh** in gear and get this done. I doubt they are honestly planning on moving there. Why would they waste the folks over in Vegas' time?? Because this also gave them the opportunity to show MLB that they are serious about their bid for a baseball team. When the next expansion year comes around, they are hoping to be seriously considered... Just my two cents..

December 12, 200421 yr Then they can have a YES of the west. And I don't think MLB would let a team go out there and fall flat on their face so they would make sure they get on the TV, and I think they would get all of Nevada and maybe into a few other states, like Utah and others since there are just no teams other than Arizona, Rockies, and the west coast teams which have their own existing markets. If the renevune is so bad give me one reason why MLB, ESPN and apparently Loria think this place who all think is a gold mine are wrong. Can you imagine the tie in with the tuorists. Buy two tickets to the baseball game and get $50 dollars in comps at the casinos. Or all the other zillion of gimmes they can do with the right tie ins. There is a lot of money out there. The amount of jerseys and non-sense they could sell.
December 12, 200421 yr Author Question PhishPhan....if the place is a gold mine, then why have the NFL, NBA, and NHL avoided it like the plague?

December 12, 200421 yr Author Take away LV right now and you cut deep into the Dodgers, Angels, and Padres. All 3 marketed there in one way or another and have future plans to draw from there. Dodgers and Angels are within 3 hours with San Diego less than 5 away. Giants and A's are about 6 hours away and the rule in Northern Nevada near Tahoe. The D'Backs aren't very far in North Arizona which is about a good 3-4 hours away.
December 12, 200421 yr Question PhishPhan....if the place is a gold mine, then why have the NFL, NBA, and NHL avoided it like the plague? 632909[/snapback] Obviously because of the gambling issue. But baseball seems to be okay with it because they okayed the meeting. Vegas has also been vocal in wanting a baseball team, spending money so MLB would come look at them and take them into consideration for the Expos. Did they use money to put together a group to try and bring in the NBA,NHL, or NFL recently because if they did I missed that. And you just listed great evidence of how there must be a market for baseball in LV. If there wasn't there wouldn't be so much baseball accessible to them, because if they are a meaningless market who doesn't like baseball it wouldn't be on TV.

NBA got scared off because of 2 LA teams, Phoenix, Golden State and Sacramento being so close by. NFL dropped them early because they saw the TV market stay low despite the growth.
December 12, 200421 yr Author It would disturb too many teams. The Expos move was good because it only affected two cities: Montreal and Washington....with minor effects on Baltimore.
December 12, 200421 yr But you know Selig is on Loria's side, otherwise the whole fiasco of how he got the team never would have happend. I don't know what the relationship between the two of them is, but it is not the same that Selig has with others I am pretty sure. According to ABC Vegas is gaining about 24,000 people a year, currently Vegas is building 88 new schools. The town is booming. Not to mention that there are nearly 40 million tourists that pass through Vegas every year. So to say there is no one out there to spend money on a team is ridiculous. Also, from the same article it says about 25% of the population is retired. And those would be good people to bring on in for those day games. And think of the luxury boxes sales. The Casinos buying boxes for their VIPs and what not, since it would be the only game in town. abc story
