December 19, 200421 yr A source told the New York Post that the Red Sox are planning to trade Kevin Millar and Doug Mientkiewicz in order to make a run at Carlos Delgado. Mientkiewicz, the hometown hero, would be a good solution for us at first i'd definitely be willing to make a run at him he can certainly replace DLee's D and i think he can hit somewhere in the .290 range w/ 15+ hr's and 75+ RBI's certainly more than servicable, especially for a team like us
December 19, 200421 yr so where does Conine go? both Millar and Mienky want to start everyday 638556 Exactly. And please don't suggest he goes to left while Miggy moves back to right. Meinky is not an upgrade over Conine offensively and certainly not defensively, Millar is too slow to play on this team.

December 19, 200421 yr He is pretty much the equivalent of Conine. I'll pass. 638559 My thoughts exactly. If Choi and Conine can't make people forget about Lee's defensive ability, Mienky's definetly not.
December 19, 200421 yr first off Doug wont be able to hit " somewhere in the .290 range w/ 15+ hr's and 75+ RBI's" ... you are looking at .300, 6-8hr 50-60 rbi at the most he's a solid ballplayer but an offensive waste at his position unless we move conine and welcome both Doug M. and Millar I dont see the point in looking for another 1st baseman that wont produce more than what Conine can put up

Mientkiewicz is one of the best, if not THE best defensive first baseman in baseball...Conine isn't even in the same league as far as defense is concerned. That being said, I wouldn't want him...he's another dead bat in the order.

If Choi and Conine can't make people forget about Lee's defensive ability, Mienky's definetly not. 638571 Except Choi stinks defensively while Mientkiewicz has a Gold Glove and many more on the way. Conine is very average defensively, Choi is below average....Mientkiewicz is just as good as Lee, arguably better.
December 19, 200421 yr We don't need a 1B. We need another Starting Pitcher. And we have no money left. Get real. Or creative.
December 19, 200421 yr I was pretty content defensively with Conine last year flawless he might be avg but he did a heck of a job at being average
December 19, 200421 yr I was pretty content defensively with Conine last year flawless he might be avg but he did a heck of a job at being average 638597 He's solid, but doesn't make the amazing, save-your-ass type of plays Lee and Mientkiewicz make on a consistent basis... I'm not trying to bash Conine or say im not content with him defensively, but to say he's the equivalent to Mientkiewicz is pretty ignorant.
December 19, 200421 yr Author Doug= Great defensive first baseman (gold glove caliber) Conine= Above Average to say that conine is better than doug defensively is just completely absent minded.
December 19, 200421 yr Let me settle this: Conine is above average at first, and can make a great play or two but don't expect it. Choi is just as good as Conine, and showed some suprising solidity at first for us last season. Mientkiewicz is better than anyone not named Derrick Lee. Not only that, but he's capable of hitting .300 and putting up a very nice on-base percentage. I think he is a PERFECT fit for this team.
December 19, 200421 yr I ain't bringing in a 1B for his defense.... I mean heck Travis Lee is out there, interested in him too?

Unless it's Encarnacion for Mientkiewicz, no thanks.

And to the people who like getting on Mientkiewicz's back for his offense: look at his stats prior to 2004 and tell me you wouldn't want him.
December 19, 200421 yr he batted .261 in 2002, does that count? he's a fine hitter, but he's not much of a run producer for a power position. We need run producers.

December 19, 200421 yr What frustrates me most in these kinds of threads is that people advocating for Doug Mientkiewicz (for example) feel obligated to trash other candidates or former players. There's no reason to put down Choi or Conine, both of whom soundly outhit this guy last season, just make your points. Absolutely none. All of them are major league ballplayers who deserve credit for their years of hard work and accomplishments.
